BREAKING THE SILENCE PROJECT, Spring 2007, Greater Quad-Cities Area
QCAD will develop training for area senior service providers that will sensitize and educate them to the needs of GLBT seniors. This project is a direct response to needs expressed by seniors during focus groups QCAD hosted in 2005. This initiative is funded in part by the PFund of Minneapolis. It is the first phase of a larger project to train area senior service providers in the needs of GLBT seniors.
OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS!, December 2006, QCAD Community Center
The community was invited to don their gay apparel and join QCAD members and friends for some holiday cheer. This event brought members of all QCAD's groups and guests together for a relaxing meeting and greet.
COMMUNITY COLLABORATIVE FOR BULLY-FREE SCHOOLS, Fall 2006 [on-going] Scott and Rock Island Counties
QCAD convened a steering committee of administrators, educators, counselors, nonprofits and juvenile courts services leaders to develop a comprehensive, community-wide approach to creating a bully-free environment. The goal is to reduce and prevent bullying problems in the schools and improve peer relations for all children.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND HUMAN SEXUALITY, November 2006, Scott Community College
QCAD staff and members responded to students' questions about sexual orientation in an effort to dispel myths and breakdown stereotypes that persist in our society. The presentation was made to a Human Sexuality class that was offered at the college for the first time in eight years.
SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM GALA, October 2006, Figge Art Museum
QCAD hosted the areas premiere of Shock to the System, featuring gay actor Chad Allen who portrayed the gay detective Donald Strachey in this mystery thriller. Guests winded and dined in elegant style on fare from Rosetti's catering in what was a terrific fundraiser for the organization.
CREATING AN INCLUSIVE CAMPUS, August 2006, Muscatine Community College, Muscatine Iowa
QCAD made this presentation as part of a faculty in-service training to identify for staff what is needed to make the campus an affirming and inclusive environment for all students. The training provided the impetus needed for establishing a Safe Zone on campus.
SEXUAL IDENTITY ISSUES OF MALE GBTQ INCARCERATED YOUTH, June 2006, Kewanee Illinois
QCAD provided training to the professional staff at the Youth Detention Facility in Kewanee on best practices for working with GLBTQ youth. Presenters learned that many Department of Corrections regulations present barriers to what best practices aim to achieve with youth.
SCOUTS HONOR, June 2006, Figge Art Museum, Davenport Iowa
QCAD sponsored a showing of the film Scouts Honor and scouting advocate David Rice, who led a discussion on the impact of banning gay youth and leaders from Boy Scouts of America. Scouting For All was founded by Rice in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold BSA's ban on homosexuals, Scouting For All works to influence the BSA to serve and include as participating members, ALL youth and adult leaders regardless of their spiritual beliefs, gender or sexual orientation.
NO FAMILY LEFT BEHIND PRESENTATION, December 2005, City Center, Moline Illinois
A group of scholars, local educators and everyday people were invited by QCAD to discuss the discriminatory impact current marriage laws have on same-sex families. The panel included representatives of LAMBDA, the ACLU of Illinois, and Augustana faculty members Ritva Williams and Ruth Ann Johnson.
