(*shot for the bad classic rock pun*)

A fresh breeze, birdsong, sunshine, blue sky. It was a wonderful day, and Akila had taken advantage of it by racing as far from home as she could. Finally, however, she had had to stop, and now she was resting a bit. The grass was fresh and green, and sprinkled throughout were bits of luscious clover. Her short strong teeth cropped at the greens with relish, enjoying a pleasant midday snack.

(( xd *tucks gun away* ))
The breeze had brought other wings to the field. Tsani fanned them and angled higher into the sky with an irritated snort, having spotted the mare helping herself to his favorite clover patch.
He was tired of trying to be noticed, by any of them. Now, the big stallion hoped more he'd just be missed again.

Keen ears twitched at a faint snort and an odd rustle, spurring Akila to lift her head and scan the skies. Rustling wasn't supposed to come from above when you weren't under a tree, was it? Wings didn't enter into her mind, at least not immediately...but a golden stallion soaring above the field rectified that. Eyes wide with awe, she broke into a trot, trying to keep pace with the stallion above.

His shadow wasn't the only thing chasing behind him on the field. Spotted. Of course he'd be noticed NOW. The stallion flapped hard, trying to put a little more distance between himself and the mare.
But a moment later, Tsani found himself glancing down at her again, unwilllingly, sense wrestling with sentiment.
Herd.
Heartbreak.
Herd.
Hurt.
HERD.
He snorted a second time. It certainly wouldn't do for a leader like him to stay too high above his groundbound fellows, would it? No way to win friends and influence people! With a flick of his tail and his broad wings, he slowed and spun on the wind, coming just a little closer to the field.

Akila kicked up into a gallop as the stallion sped up, seeming as if he were trying to get away. But why would he want to do that? If she was a threat, all he had to do was take to the air again, and anything she could do would be rendered useless. Her ears pricked as he spun around, azure eyes focused on him as she tried to anticipate where he would head next. At the very least, keeping up with him was proving an amusing game.

Tsani landed with an impressive impact and a spray of earth, white wings spread fully and broad chest puffed.
She was a mare, but not too far from fillyhood, he judged by her long legs. Certainly of an age with his son. What proper sire or dam let their young one run this far, alone?
He knew that answer, more than anyone else. His ears flattened. He LEARNED from his mistakes. He would have to teach it to this one's family.
"Is there something I can help you with?" he said at last. "Are you lost?"

If the golden stallion was aiming to impress, he was succeeding admirably. Akila had met a few winged ones by now, but this one certainly had a flair for the dramatic. It took a moment to realize he was speaking to her, and she hurried to prod her brain to catch up. "If by 'lost' you mean 'exploring,' then yes, I guess I am," she replied, tilting her head. "I know I'm definitely curious...you acted almost like you were afraid of me, for a moment. I'm not that scary, am I?" She wasn't expecting him to say that he had been, that just wouldn't make sense. He had a huge advantage in his wings, one that she lacked. He could simply fly over anything that she would have to go through or around, and easily lose her doing so. So why had he tried to fly away after just a glance?

"Exploring? Alone?" The idea this filly was completely at the mercy of the wilderness distracted him momentarily from the rest of her words. "Do y--"
He intended to ask if her parents knew what she was up to. But then her question finally registered.
"Afraid?" He snorted proudly, tossing his head incredulously. "Of course I'm not! But YOU should be, at least a little, my dear!"

Blink. Blink. Blinkblink.
Oh craaaaaaap. Not a guy that thought mares were weak and helpless. Akila didn't mind being protected, but constantly sheperded? That was for foals! Young she might be, but a foal she most certainly was not. Flicking her tail, she strode around him with an appraising glance. "Afraid...why? It's not because I'm...female...is it?" She tilted her head with a too-sweet smile. "Or are you really some skinwalker, just waiting for an opportunity to shift into your true form?" She winked mockingly.

The big stallion deflated noticeably and shifted from leg to leg under the mare's scrutiny, ruffling his feathers out again with as much dignity as he could manage. "I...? I'm not! That's not it at all!"
He started circling with her, tail lashing his flanks. There was something about the way she was sizing him up that made him feel as though he were shrinking clear down to her delicate hooves. Did he LOOK like a skinwalker?
Of course he didn't!
"I....would you stop that?" He halted with a snort, stiffening his broad neck to a authoritative curve. "If I had been a skinwalker, or a kalona, we wouldn't be having this talk! I don't care what you are, being alone is--"
He sagged a bit, tone and posture. "....being alone is not good. Dangerous, I mean. I'M not afraid, I'm not on the ground." He recovered with a fine flap of his wings. "You wouldn't have caught me if I hadn't decided to land."

"Exactly," Akila purred in a satisfied tone, tilting her head. "That is why I am not afraid of you." She stepped closer, just a little, and put her head down to look up at his face. "Why is being alone so not good? I have my family in case of loneliness...do you not have one? As for danger...every day we live is full of risk, whether we know it or not. Shall I die of a heart attack, from a skinwalker's fangs, from a misstep into a raging river, from a deadly fever?" She shook her head. "Nobody can protect me from that, or save me from it."

"You should give them the chance!" Tsani's ears flattened, and with great difficulty he reminded himself this filly had not seen as many seasons as he had. "I would kill anything that would try to harm my son." he snorted, white wings flashing out to their full length as they beat the wind with his agitation. "If you think nobody can protect you, then you've never seen anyone like me!"

Akila pinned her own ears. What was so wrong with letting her father have time with her mother? "If I needed help, I have my family, and the herd," she snapped irritably. She was quickly running out of patience with the patronizing air this stallion was taking with her. He might think he was right, but Akila would prove him very, very wrong. As for his last statement...she stalked up to his side and boldly plucked one, two feathers from his wing. "You know what? I dare you to try it." With a rapid turn, she humped her back and lashed out in a good hard kick at his side.
"And don't patronize me."

Tsani shrilled in surprise and reared back as he was caught by the mare's kick.
"What was that for?" he demanded at last, tail flagged high. It hadn't hurt much, but it sent his stomach in the same knots he'd become too familiar with. When was he going to learn? He flattened his ears and matched her glare. "I wasn't patronizing anyone!"

Akila tossed her head, nostrils flaring. "You think I need protecting. I don't. That falls in the category of patronization, doesn't it? I'm not..." She stomped a hoof, "I'm not some weak silly filly!" In an effort to hide frustrated tears, she turned and stalked away a few steps, laying the feathers she'd snatched on the ground. "And I'm not your son...or your daughter."
