I was sarching a little on the X-SAMPA for phonemes and that question didn't leave out of my mind. What is the difference between palatalized consonants and consonants before /j/? Like, /t_j/ and /tj/? I just pronounce them equally.

In palatalised consonants, the /j/ sound is much more slight and it more affects the consonant itself than anything. With the palatal approximant following, it doesn't change the previous consonant at all and it's more audible. 3nodding
