Mercury's core is still liquid: Surprise Slosh! Mercury's Core is Liquid

It raises an interesting question to me: if the core is still liquid, why does it still covered in pockmarks?

You do realise that the pockmarks are on the surface, which is not the core, yes yes?

The Earth and Io have liquid cores which create convection currents that cause the crust to turn itself over. Mercury doesn't seem to that.

Perhaps Mercury's crust is much thicker, relative to its diameter, than Earth's is, relative to its diameter. Mercury's magnetic field is very weak, so perhaps the molten core is very small.

Hmmm.... This is very interesting. However, since Mercury is a small planet, I doubt that the molten core is to think about much as the planet's mass is too small to make it flowing hot. However, It still is hot enough to melt iron so this is a new matter to us on the planet. Continue reading those articles to find out more. wink
