Okay, I've been having my periods for about 3 years now. They are always very irregular and I started by using towels at first but then moved on to tampons. They can be a lifesaver sometimes. At first I had a hard time putting them in but now I'm used to it.

Anyway, yesterday I came home from school and changed it as normal. But I was in a bit of a rush and I'm scared that I might have inserted the next one without taking the other one out. I can't remember getting rid of the one I'd taken out clearly in my mind and now I'm panicking incase I've inserted another one and pushed the previous one further into my v****a...

I'm a naturally anxious person and talked myself out of it, saying i'd be fine. I've felt okay all day at school but about an hour ago I had diarhea and I KNOW that is a symptom of TSS so I'm freaking out right now. Is it possible I have TSS? Or that something is wrong? I also have a horrible tummy now as a result of diarhea, is that just a coincidence?

I'm just freaking out a little right now.

Tampons cannot go into your body, get lost, and float around. So if you did put in two, you would be able to pull two out. Your v****a is like a tube with two ends. One end is where you put the tampons in. At the other end, there is something called your cervix. Your cervix opens up during childbirth, but otherwise stays closed so that nothing can go into your body far. So you could get into the shower and feel around for a tampon. If there is that extra one in there, it can't be too far up, so you should be able to at least feel the string.

TSS is serious and rare. A variety of nasty symptoms appear can quickly appear.

"Toxic shock syndrome from staphylococcus starts suddenly with vomiting, high fever (temperature at least 102 degrees Fahrenheit [38.8 degrees Celsius]), a rapid drop in blood pressure (with lightheadedness or fainting), watery diarrhea, headache, sore throat, and muscle aches. Within 24 hours, a sunburn-like rash appears. There also may be bloodshot eyes and an unusual redness under the eyelids or inside the mouth (and v****a in females). After that, broken blood vessels may appear on the skin. Other symptoms may include: confusion or other mental changes; decreased urination; fatigue and weakness; thirst; weak and rapid pulse; pale, cool, moist skin; and rapid breathing"

If you notice these symptoms, you will need to go to the doctor. So far, you just have one symptom, so it certainly could be a coincidence, but be on the lookout for the other symptoms just in case.

Okay. I'll keep an eye out for the other symptoms. I guess maybe I am just being paranoid.

The reason I am worried is because my mum told me one time that she did what I'm worried I've done, inserted a tampon before removing one she already had in and it went up and lodged vertically in her v****a. She had to go to hospital to get it removed. Or something along those lines. I'm at my dads house right now so I can't ask her about it or anything. But if I get especially worried I may just ring her later or something. Just for double reassurance, even though I have you guys here too.

If you put your foot up on a stool and stick your (Clean) fingers up into your v****a, you should be able to feel if there's anything stuck. But if anything was still in there, it couldn't get lost, it'd stay in the v****a.

Now, TSS is pretty unlikely. Due to the changes in the tampons themselves, it's not very common, even if you leave them in too long. You're more likely to get a urinary infection than TSS.

Your mom might be exagerating. Unless she was afraid of touching herself that way, there is no logical reason she had to have gone to the hospital.
