Hope that got your attention.

Scientists are actually making (and people are using) bionic limbs that are capable fine motor control and sensory feedback. They are still working on the project but prototype are already being used by some.

How long do you think it will take for bionic limbs to become equal in utility to natural limbs?

If we ever create bionic limbs supperior to normal ones do you think it would be wrong to have a part of your body replaced with a mechanical one when you were not an amputee to begin with? (just to stir up some controversy and see what people think)

Hmmm...interesting moral question. I suppose it depends on your beliefs and religion. Do you consider your body to be sacred or not. The hardest part might be finding a doctor willing to lop off your perfectly healthy appendage. And what if something goes wrong, like your body rejects the new bit?

There would have to be some very serious advances before I would consider it. Just improved strength or speed would not be enough. It would have to be self-powering, deriving its energy for movement from carbohydrates in my blood stream, so I didn't have to remember to charge it up each night. It would also have to be self-repairing, so it didn't need regular maintenance or greasing and didn't unexpectedly break down. Its controls would have to be well shielded from stray EM radiation so my bionic leg didn't suddenly mule-kick the person behind me, or my hand didn't start making rude gestures all on its own.

Come to think of it, the limbs that are currently attached to me do just those things.

EDIT: I actually think this is a seriously cool scientific advance, and offers to greatly improve the lives of amputees worldwide.

If I got a pair of replacement legs, I would ask for chicken knees.

Anyway, we should have servicable cyborg limbs within fifty years at the worst, but it will be a lot longer before they're covered in synthskin like Skywalker's was.

(Incidentally, are we including replacement sensory organs under this topic?)

Interesting title, as I am a Star Wars fan. 3nodding

I do feel that such would indeed be possible, and at the very least, it's possible that such may be seen on our lifetimes. Of course, I don't recommend this for just anyone. However, such would enrich the lifes of persons whom are otherwise lacking their limbs, for whatever reason. And, of course, there is the age old question of whether or not one would be able to play the piano afterwards. 3nodding

Thanks for the comments. One of the really interesting things I got from the article was that the hand is able to provide some sensory feedback to the wearing. Somehow by attaching it to healthy nerves the body is able to sort of sense of touch.

I am going to move this to the sci-fi sub-forum because of its relation to sci-fi just so you know 3nodding

I would say that it would be hard to make one that is lightweight and moves like a normal hand at the same time. But you never know with todays technology!

ever notice that both anakin and luke losed the same hand(left) almost as if vader was pasing down a family tradition.

I hope I live to see that day, when prosthetics superior to natural human appendages are commonplace.

I would have no problem switching out an eye or hand for something better, assuming they were safe and affordable.

And as always, I would say to those against it for "the sanctity of the human body" reason: "If you're against it, don't do it!" .... *stupid *.... rolleyes
