At the Gates were a highly influential Swedish melodic death metal band. Originally formed in 1990 from the ashes of Grotesque, the band combined the speed and anger of thrash metal with the burgeoning death metal scene in Gothenburg, Sweden. Their most famous album was Slaughter of the Soul, released in 1995.

Mister Lewis Slaughter of the Soul is kerrazy never heard anything like it I've heard plenty. I honestly don't see why people love them. Aside from starting a trend of crappy metalcore and melo death bands, they didn't do anything special. The guitars are descent, but the vocals are terrible. stressed

Sots is good, it loses its charm after a while though. It is unfortunate that it helped start the plague of metalcore rip-off bands. Also, does anyone know where I could hear some of Grotesque's music?

Necro'd, bitches!
I honestly don't know why so many people revere AtG. Sure, they were influential, but they can't hold a candle to IF at their prime, DT at any point in their career, or even Carcass on Heartwork. They basically have only one song, a three-four minute bit of thrashy melodeath with rather limp drumming and riffs that tend not to go anywhere. I've listened to SotS in its entirety, and there's no variation AT ALL. All I own from them is Terminal Spirit Disease, which is only six tracks long (one of which is an instrumental consisting of acoustic guitar, cello, and ambient SFX), and I think that's plenty.
