Thump....thump....thump... Faster and faster, harder and harder. It felt as though Sandrina's heart was going to beat straight out of her chest. She was lost again. Oh how she cursed her simple mind for being lost AGAIN. The pack was nowhere in sight, or at least she didn't think she was still on pack grounds. Lilith, her alpha would pretend to be angry, but she wouldn't really be. No one could ever stay angry at Sandrina for too long. It was as if she was a lost cause, and she hated that! Why did she have to be the butt of everyone's jokes? She knew she was a simpleton. She knew that, but did it mean she needed to be treated like a stupid little pup that was worth no ones time. She padded forward as a lone whimper escaped her throat to be trapped into her maw, to come out sounding more whispy and fearful then intended.
Her eyes ticked madly around. One tree began to bleed in with the next and the next, and the dark of the night made them all seem like great looming giants over her. There weren't very many stars out tonight, too clouded. Which meant Sandrina was more confused then fearful and the confusion was something that was a tell to her more then even the mottled fur she had. She twisted her head this way and that, to one tree giant to the other. Someone had once told her to howl when lost. Maybe her pack would hear her then? Maybe they would...but would they care? Probably not. Oh, she should just be left out here to die. She was far too stupid to be allowed to live.
She threw her head back and howled. It came out weak and strangled, like someone had just sucked all the life out from her. Somewhere the foliage rustled and it felt like her heart stopped all together. An ear swivelled forward and the other followed suit to perk in the direction of the sound's source. Her nostrils flickered and her muscles were so tense it was like the they were pulling and stretching beneath her fur.
"Who...whose there?" She said weakly, "Besides....me."

He had been slinking through the shadows, trying to remain unseen as he had been taught - when he heard the howl. It was surprisingly close by and sent a tingle of nervousness down his spine. Normally Remiel wasn't one to get nervous, but out here alone in strange lands was enough to make even the most laidback wolf uptight.
He lowered himself, wincing as the grass crackled beneath his body and lay poised to run. He did not like to think himself as a coward but he had remembered what his father had said. Fighting was bad and to keep the peace one had to do whatever necessary.
So there he lay, breathing quietly in the dark, his golden-brown eyes looking out across the forest before him.
Then came the voice and with it came a sense of great relief. It sounded as nervous as he felt and that only helped ease his worries. He had been lucky when meeting other wolves, because so far he had met only ones that were intent on being friends.
So he slipped out from the undergrowth and turned his head this way and that, spotting her only a few strides away.
Remiel. He replied to her question. Remiel is here. Are you okay, Miss? It was clear from his tone that he meant no harm, but he had not considered taking a more cautious approach. In the end his curiosity had won him over.

Her head snapped up and by that action alone her chest heart all the more. It was hard to act unafraid when one was litteraly shaking from head to tail. Her pack was taught well in the ways of defense, but when it came to her rank and even her simple state she wore her fear like a painted red target.
"Miss? Whose miss?" She looked from him then turned her head behind her, as if expecting this 'miss' person to be lurking behind her. When she saw no one she suddenly felt her body grow hot from embarrassment as she turned back to him. "Oh..." This must have been a form of greeting or...something. Sandrina didn't know much in the ways of the world, or anything for that matter.
But still he obviously meant her no harm. She learned from the way she was usually treated that when someone meant illwill towards you, they presented it firsthand and everything else was after the fact.
"My name is Sandrina." she said before she realized there was a question attatched to that. "I'm lost," she said stupidily. "Do you know where you are?"

He was unsure why she was so afraid but he was quite sure he couldn't have been that scary. He really wasn't a little bit scary at all. Not with a face like his! He smiled and straightened, puffing out his chest a little.
Nice to meet you Sandrina." He laughed. "I called you Miss, Miss Sandrina. It's the polite way to talk to a lady, or so my pa taught me. He beamed and wagged his tail. I'm actually a little lost myself, sad to say. I wandered a bit too far from my pack. He turned to gaze around and gave a small whine at how everything looked so different in the dark.
I take it your also from a pack if your lost? It's not the Outrider pack, is it? He doubted it was but he thought he should check.

A maw twisted into a warm smile, and slowly but surely her heart began to beat in a more steady pace just as a long thankful sigh escaped hre maw.
"Your pa seems awfully nice. No one ever taught me anything," she added as an afterthought. It was sad how true the statement was. When she heard the whine her eyes ticked upward again, fear returning but only in an instant before it died once more at his next question.
"The outriders...?" She said before she shook her head and let the rehearsed name slip her maw, "Gomorroah." She looked listless for a moment and then said offhandly, "We can just be lost together then.." The woods were awfully scary, in the dark, alone.

No one? He questioned, taking a step closer. Somehow he felt safer when he was with someone else. Face the world with a friend and you can face it with a smile, or so he believed. His ears twitched and then he spoke again.
Not even your parents? As far as he was aware that was the job of a mother and father, to teach their young ones. To hunt and to survive, to teach them the ways of life. His father had taught him everything he knew, well almost. He'd learnt alot from Equus too and Phib!
Hs smiled widely as she gave the name of her pack and shook his head good-naturedly. I won't even try to pronounce that myself. He shifted and nodded.
Perhaps we should just continue and see where we end up, what do you think? There's safety in numbers so it'll be good if we stuck together for a bit.

Sandrina's lineage was such a dark dirty secret that even her simple mind knew that she wasn't supposed to tell. She frowned a bit, wondering how to skirt that one. Someone like her wasn't adapt in the ways of social connection. Oh she could talk alright, on and on. Endlessly and without an actual point, but when it came to delving deeper and making a serious connection, well that was better suited for someone other then the likes of her. But she wanted to try at least.
"I don't even know my father," she said, letting a shrug grace her shoulders. "And my mother she.....uhm...well...uh," now that was the dirty part of the deep dark dirty secret. Her mother did not want to be known as her mother. It would crash the whole pack, it would gain her less respect, not to mention it would give Sandrina a whole heap of trouble. "She's never around much," she finally capped off.
"I think that's a awfully good idea," she said taking to padding alongside him. "There's two of us," she said in regards to his 'safety in numbers spiel'. Her remark had no real relevancy to be uttered, but with Sandrina this was a common occurance.

He moved so that they could walk side by side, winding through the trees that seemed to have hundreds of eyes. They bowed their branches as if to take a closer look at the wolves and on the wind he could hear their voices. Somhow Rem couldn't help but think they weren't supposed to be here and remembered stories of the wolf spirits that could sometimes be seen in the glowing in the dark. He tried briefly to imagine what they looked like but could only think of their eyes, shining in the moonlight. This image reminded him painfuly of his dreams with Kaya so he put that thought far to the back of his mind. His sister would not be a spirit, she would not.
It's okay Sandrina, Miss. He replied, many wolves do not know their families. I'm like that myself, although I think the situation is different. It hurt to talk about it, but he wanted to. I live with my father now, but my mother and three siblings dissapeared when I was a pup. I doubt I'll ever see them again. He tried to force a smile onto his face then, not wanting to dampen the mood. But it doesn't matter now. I've found a new family within the pack. It must be the same for you, right? All wolves leave their parents eventually so no one will even question it. Though he made no plans to leave his father sometimes he did want to follow instincts and leave to explore and find a new pack out there...but then that would mean leaving Phib and he didn't think he could do that.

Sandrina inwardly beamed as he walked at her side. She was used to feeling lower, inferior, even though at first glance she looked like someone who held the same ranking as any other normal wolf. But Sandrina was made to feel like she felt due to her overall lack of wit. She was pulled from her thoughts however when she saw how intensely Remiel was looking at the trees. Her own eyes followed suit, but she could not see what he saw. The motled wolf only saw shadows and darker forms which still, in her mind, looked like looming laughing giants. It was frightening if she stared for too long so she had to turn away and use the horizon's end as her focal point.
"Oh Remmy, that's horrible," she said, then corrected herself quickly with a dip of her head, "Uh if it's okay to call you that of course, but never say never. I never thought I would get lost again....but, here I am" she added weakly.
"Yes, it was like that for me," she said, though her voice sounded odd with that statement. She was suddenly quiet, something new for her, like the wheels in her mind were finally starting to kick into gear. A light in her eyes was shining, and just as it came quickly, it left equally as fast. The only remnant was a dying ember of fading light.

It's okay. You can call me whatever you like. Remiel doesn't suit me much anyway...it used to once but now its pretty meaningless. His tail wagged as he tried to cheer himself up and somehow he wished it wasn't so dark. He stumbled over something on the ground and looked down to see a root curling up from the ground like a giant worm.
He gave a small, nervous laugh then and skittered to keep up with Sandrina. Maybe I will see them again. He replied. And if I do I will never let them outof my sight..and if not...if not I will pretend they are out there in the forest happy with their mates and pups. He sighed and his heart ached a little. I was the youngest of the litter, so who knows, maybe they are stronger than I thought.
He turned his ears towards her at her last statement and wondered why she sounded different. Are you okay Miss Sandrina? He asked, inquisitively. Don't worry, I won't let anything sneak up on us, not with my nose.

At the sound of that her tail began to wag in a happy, short burst of energy that seemed to counter the dark and dreary background the knight presented. Sandrina couldn't help but giggle as the big male tripped over a root. But she was quick to halter in her footing so that he could catch up easier, and even gave him a friendly poke with her shoulder to his.
"That's a good way to put it," she said, nodding her head. But, at his next words she, once more, visablly showed the trouble her mind was making. Finally she let a wayward sigh escape her maw. "I'm not worried....I don't think. I'm not sure what I feel. I just feel it. I don't know how to say it..on account of my not being so bright," she said, a pained expression covering her delicate features.

He gave a small yip as she nudged him and moved to buffet the side of his head against her own shoulder. Her colour simply dazzled his eyes, even in the darkness, he could tell her fur was a true masterpiece. He had always been fond of the natural colours of his pelt, for they reminded him of autumn; his favourite time of the year. Yet by the shade of hers in the dark he could tell it was stunning and put his own to shame.
Not so bright? He was unsure of the phrase. He had never considered himself 'bright' either but he had never let it bother him. Hey don't worry Miss Sandrina. Being smart isn't all there is to life. I'm no intelligent wolf myself but I know one thing, the most important thing. He paused here for dramatic effect and cast her a mysterious look. Behind his eyes there shone joy and it twinkled brightly.
I know how to smile and I know how to laugh. I think you do too. And his smile widened. You'll find that ignorance raly is bliss and the wolves that seem so wise are actually very unhappy. We're better off the way we are.

Sandrina had before felt the closeness of another wolf. There were of course many pack members that knew of her, but they did nothing but make a mockery over the fact that she just didn't 'get' things. There was her only friend, Linn, but sometimes Sandrina wondered if Linn kept her around just to make herself look even better by comparison. She certainly wouldn't put it past her.
She smiled at his words and when he paused the effect was certainly not lost on her. She leaned forward, eyes bright and eager, almost like the curiosity of a puppy in a grown femme's body. Sandrina stood on pins and needles as she waited eagerly for the answer, like it was the freshest piece of meat on the planet and she was dying of hunger.
"I smile and laugh all the time!" She said happily, letting her tail wag in a free spirited motion. "I sure do like bliss,' she said thoughtfully before looking over at him and grinning wider. "Gee Remmy, you're awfully smart," she said.

Remiel had what he would call; aquaintences. He had so far met no one that he would consider best friends, no one that he would readily pour his heart out to. He had met plenty of wolves but most of them he considered 'playmates' of sorts, none of them had been true friends.Perhaps they would have been if he spoke to them more but many of the wolves he had spoken to only once.
He assumed it would be the same with Sandrina. They were from other worlds, other packs, brought together only for survival - or sorts.
There you go then! And he smiled wider. You're far smarter than any other wolf. You know the meaning of life and you learned it faster than most others. Hey, some wolvesnever learn it. His tail wagged. It was his theory, but being hapy and spreading happiness seemed like a wonderful meaning for being alive.
Then up ahead he heard a sound and his ears perked up. Hey, do you hear that? He paused and strained his ears. Lo and behold, he heard the steady rushing gurgle of water and his heart rose. He remembered what he had been told, that all water runsto the sea.
If he followed the river downstream, he might soon be home. But then, what of Sandrina?
Miss Sandrina... He paused. Is your pack near the sea?

Sandrina couldn't help but beam at that. Smarter then any other wolf? A happy little gait took hold of her as she padded along, tail swishing and slashing the air to and fro as she did. "I've met a lot of grumpy wolves," She agreed, "I suppose they really don't learn it." It was a said statment for the mind of her. Sandrina wanted everyone to be happy. It was a sorry thing to be wise but never know the true wisdom. She was glad that she and Remiel were happy.
As he said it, she heard it. Her own ears swivelled and perked forward, listening intently. "Yes, it's a river!"
But, then she had to go and think. Certainly not one of the mottled femme's strong points. It took a few beats but she finally had a good layout inside her head. "No, no sea....no river....we just have..." she thought harder, "a small lake and a stream....do you think we're close?"
