Chapter 1:
Jess drummed her fingers on her desk in boredom as the teacher explained the method of solving an extremely complex math problem, to which she had already jotted down the answer a few minutes before. Glancing over she noticed that only10 minutes had gone by since the start of class. She groaned, today was probably the slowest Friday in history. Moments later a knock was heard at the door and in walked two people; the Principal and a skinny, spiky haired boy with a lip ring. The principal then introduced the boy to the class as ‘Stephan‘, earning the authoritative figure a glare. The boy obviously didn’t like being called that, Jess noticed. He was then instructed to sit next to her, and did so obediently. When the principal left class had resumed as if nothing had happened. Another 45 minutes went by and class was over. Jess looked over at the new student who was absentmindedly scribbling ‘algebra sucks’ across his note book and held out her hand to shake his. Noticing her hovering palm, he shook it warmly and introduced himself as Dero.
“My name is Jessica, it’s nice to meet you.” she said cheerfully. “I see you don’t like math much.”
‘Not really,’ he said with a smirk. “How’d you guess?”
Jess chuckled pointing at his chicken scratch, “it’s kind of obvious.”
“Well, I should probably get going. I’ll see you around.” he said waving a quick ‘bye’ and he left the room.
“maybe you will.” She whispered, collecting her things and dropping them in her bag. ‘He’s actually not too bad, once you talk to him.’ she thought as made her way out the door and opened her locker. After rummaging around for a few minutes, she found what she was looking for and placed them in her bag, then a pair of hands covered her eyes and a singsongy voice asked “guess who?”
“Andreas!” she yelled as she turned around and punched him in the chest, “you scared the s**t out of me.” He just smirked with satisfaction. Andreas Crap was a tall medium built kid with sandy brown hair and crystal blue eyes; despite his looks he was quite the prankster, but a genuine friend who’d do just about anything for you.
“What the hell’s gotten into you?” He asked, looking in her locker mirror, twirling the front of his hair into a duck-tail like flock. Jess scoffed and slammed the door shut, causing Crap to jump back, then she said exasperatedly “nothing.”
“oh, come on I know you a lot better than that.” he chided, placing a hand on her shoulder. What he said was true, they had been friends since Kindergarten. “there’s just this new guy in my Algebra class…that‘s all.” She explained as they headed towards Chemistry.
“Uh-huh.”
“what?” she asked as she took her seat right next to their friend Robert, and Crap sat on the left.
“You hear that Fluxie? Jess has herself a boyfriend.” Crap joked.
“I DO NOT!” Jess protested as she grabbed a pair of goggles from the bin in front of her and placed them over her eyes, as the boys did the same. “Besides those goggles look retarded on you Andreas!” she said seethingly as Crap adjusted them over his head and frowned. Flux didn’t say a word, he wasn’t much of a talker and hated fighting over stupid s**t, so they all sat in silence until the end of class.
When 2:30 rolled around, they were no longer mad at each other and descended the cement steps in front of the school together, until Jess noticed Dero standing near a hedge and insisted that the boys meet him. They exchanged greetings, names and handshakes, then minutes later a dark green Ford Taurus pulled in front of the school.
“That’s my father,” Dero said quietly, ‘I’ll see you guys.” Jess looked at Dero’s dad, he seemed somewhat harsh and demanding. She shivered as he stared at her coldly then shifted his gaze to his son, and watched him until he got into the car. When he did, it seemed a heated argument ensued, and what ever Dero’s answer was, it was rewarded with a swift smack across his face. He sneered as Dero then put his belt on, then the car pealed away leaving a trail of burnt rubber across the pavement.
“I don’t think I like that man , you guys.” she said angrily.
“Why not?” Crap asked.
Jess shrugged, “I don’t know, something about him didn’t seem right.”
‘Maybe, you’re just over reacting. Anyway, today’s Friday and you know what that means!”
Jess and Flux replied in unison, “Pizza and movies!”
Crap nodded as he held out a clenched fist, as did the other two in order to figure out who was going to buy the pizza and movies, and whose house they were having it at. After a 5 round Rock-paper-scissors shootout, a loser was declared. Needless to say Crap was not happy with this decision, but was promised that he could choose a pizza topping.
Their first stop was the local pizza shop. Choosing a booth in the corner they all sat down and grabbed a menu, not out of need, just habit. The waitress already knew what they were going to have, so she brought over 2 Cokes and Mt.Dew, then took their order for a large extra cheese pizza with pepperoni and sausage.
“That Dero kid seemed really cool, maybe he should hang out with us sometime.” Flux said dodging Crap’s paper spitball barrage. “Yeah. He should.” Crap agreed.
“hmmm…maybe.“ Jess said sipping her soda.
Their pizza was amazing as usual and when the waitress came back to ask them how it was, Crap let a huge belch in response.
Jess grimaced and said handing the woman 15 dollars, “Crap that was frigging disgusting, but the pizza was great… you can keep the change.”
“yay, we can go get movies now.” Flux said hopping around like a kid in a candy store.
Jess just rolled her eyes then nodded. When they walked inside the video store, the boys ran in different directions “I don’t want to see Porn this time Andreas!” She yelled, “or My Little Ponies, Flux!”
Jess then sauntered over to the Action section and picked up ‘Pitch Black’. After making her selection, she went to see what the boys had picked. She cocked an eyebrow as Flux handed her the movie he picked. “Bambi? Flux, you picked Bambi? Why?”
“It’s sad, but the deer is so cute.” he said.
“You’re 18 years old!” she protested.
“so?” he gave her a puppy dog look
She groaned then said “fine. Let’s go see what Crap picked out. And it better not be that ’Lesbians from Mars’ again. That was the stupidest friggin’ movie ever!”
It seemed that Crap was having a hard time figuring out what he wanted. “I vote for American History X” Jess suggested from behind him. Crap nodded.
Now that they had their three movies selected, they brought them to the counter and were surprised to see who was working there.
“Hey Dero, how are you?” Jess asked politely, hoping that she wouldn’t make it know that she saw what happened earlier.
"Okay.” he said. A slight bruise could be seen forming on his cheek, but she pretended not to notice. ’Just these three?”
Jess nodded quickly.
“okay…$8.75“
She handed him the money, and asked “do you want to hang out with us tonight?” Dero opened the register and thought for a moment. “Okay, sounds cool”
“We’re going to be at Andreas’s house tonight, it’s only a couple of blocks away, I’ll give you directions.” she said jotting down a quick map then handed it to him.
“see you there then.” Dero said with a smile.
She thanked him and grabbed the movies then noticed that the boys were not behind her anymore. In the corner, Crap was flexing his arms and comparing himself to a cardboard cut out of Vin Diesel and Flux was sitting in a beanbag chair watching some kids anime show.
“Hey, stop violating Vin and lets go” she said to them as she walked out the door, and soon after they followed in hot pursuit.
“I hope you don’t mind, I invited Dero.” she said as they walked down the street. “He’ll be over later.”
“Cool!” Crap said.
“Awesome!” Flux chirped.
The rest of the walk to Craps’ house was spent in silence. After they got settled and popcorn made, they all sat in front of the large Television and just started to watch ‘Pitch Black’ when the doorbell was heard and Jess volunteered to answer it. Standing in the doorway was Dero, looking rather sheepish and soaking wet.
“Sorry I’m late.” he mumbled holding out the wet piece of paper. “I would’ve been here quicker but it started raining pretty hard and the map got wet.” Jess smiled and invited him in.
“Dero!” The boys said as they both gave him a hug.
“Um, hi guys.” he said.
“you look like a drowned rat, man. Do you want to borrow some clothes?” Crap asked.
Dero nodded as he followed Crap upstairs while Jess and Flux waited quietly downstairs.
“Hey Jess. Could you come up here for a second?” Crap called from his room.
‘what the hell?’ she wondered as she went upstairs. “yeah?” she asked from the doorway.
“Dero wants to talk to you.” Crap said as he left the room.
“oh, ok.”
“I know you saw what happened today.” Dero said pulling on a pair of jeans over a pair of leopard print boxers.
“I…um” she tried explaining as she turned red. “I didn’t mean to, I just…”
“That’s okay, I know you didn’t mean to. I’d just appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone about that.” he said.
Jess couldn’t say anything, partly because she didn’t know what to say and there also was a half naked guy standing in front of her. “Okay.” she finally whispered, trying to ignore the fact that she just saw a fading blue bruise across his ribs, but couldn't.
“Thanks.” he said pulling on a faded black band t-shirt, then hugged her. “I knew I could trust you. Now lets go watch some movies.”
Jess stood there for a moment, what would happen if it got worse, what if it wasn’t just the occasional ‘scolding’ slap? Hopefully that wouldn’t happen, but she was still worried even if she had just met him. She wasn’t going to let him be a victim.
a/n: yes i noticed that she payed for everything...but that's okay. because she's cool like that ^__~ and i thought teenage versions of the boys would be cute, so i threw them in too! *squeal*

I'm sure at age 18ish, he wouldn't take that s**t from anyone..so it's still a work in progress, but i'm glad you like it. ^__^

Halfway through the second movie, the floor had been littered with popcorn and candy wrappers. Jess glanced over and noticed Crap and Flux sprawled out on the plush carpet sleeping, and the sight of Flux draping his arm across Crap’s waist made her chuckle. ’that would be so good for blackmail.’
‘what’s so funny?’ Dero whispered, as he munched the remaining popcorn that was still in the bowl. Jess pointed to the boys embraced on the floor as she fell over in fit of laughter. Dero’s eyes widened for a second, then with a mischievous grin spread across his face as he took his cell phone out of his back pocket, flipped it open and snapped a picture.
“Now if we ever need them to do something, and they don’t want to do it…we’ll make them with this.” He said showing Jess the picture, who was wiping the tears from her eyes from laughing so hard.
“Anyway…what do you think about tutoring me in math?” he asked.
“sure.”
“Are there usually many people there?”
“a few…why?”
“just curious”
Jess nodded. She could understand his shyness, she used to be like that when she first moved to Westvaco. “Um, if you don’t mind, I was wondering if you could tell me more about why you moved here.” she asked cautiously.
Dero drew in a deep breath, and begun his story.
‘Well about 13 years ago, my Mom and Dad, had split after a bitter and strained marriage. A long custody battle ensued where eventually custody was awarded to my mother. A few months later my dad was found dead, the coroners had ruled that it was a result of severe depression. I was only 5 and had no idea what it was and Mom never explained why but only said, that I didn’t need to know because she had found someone else. She introduced Dave to me one day as I was playing in the park sandbox. He seemed nice for awhile, but everything changed after they got married. He would tell me occasionally , when mom wasn’t around, that I wouldn’t ever grow up to be anything. It hurt my feelings, and tried to tell mom all these mean this he’d say but he’d tell her it was all a figment of my wild imagination, which she believed was true. 9 Months later, Mom had fallen ill and was sent to the hospital. We’d visit her daily for a few hours then go home, where Dave would sit in his favorite chair by the tv and would smoke and drink until he passed out. A few days later a phone call came saying that she has died of pneumonia. The next few days went by in a blur as people, some of whom I’ve never met, gave their condolences at the funeral and burial. Again, being only 5 I had no idea what was going on but knew she was never coming back. ’
Dero paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts for another round of ’relive your past’ then continued.
‘After that Dave had become my legal guardian , much to his dismay. School was not a regular thing for me after that. During the day, I spent it alone in my room reading comics, trying to stay out of his way as much as possible. At night after eating my dinner, usually a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I’d brush my teeth then go to sleep. One night he dragged me out of bed with out warning and beat me. When I asked him “why?” he replied, “ because I wanted to.” After that the beatings had become more frequent, so much so that they occurred everyday, but I had expected that now. It was later explained to me by Dave that he was never in love with my mother, and only married her for the cooking and sex, but when she died he was stuck with me. Every few months we were kick out of the homes we lived in because Dave was to lazy to get off his fat a** to get a job or pay the rent. I’ve actually lost count, because we’ve moved so many times. When we arrived here about two years ago, I was allowed to go back to school and found myself a job. Academically, I had caught up rather quickly but had virtually no friends so I never went to any social gatherings. I’m actually quite glad that I transferred into your class today, otherwise I’d still have nobody” He finished, as he hugged her.
She couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. She was kind of relieved that he told his story to someone, but appalled that he did nothing about it.
“Dero,” she said pulling out of his embrace, “you have to do something…you can’t keep letting him do this to you.”
He sighed deeply then nodded. “I know…but even if I did, the ******** would deny it.”
“so what? You have to tell someone…anyone.” Jess spat, as she crossed her arms over her chest, keeping her from shaking Dero out of anger.
“can we not talk about this?” he asked, as Crap stirred and mumbled something about giant pickles chasing him.
“Avoiding it isn’t going to help either!”
“I Know!” he shouted then repeated softly “I know…I just…it’s been happening for so long, it’s like a normal part of my life.”
“Nothing about it is normal. You have to stop it…now.”
Dero nodded then checked his watch. “oh s**t, I have to get home…or Dave will kill me.”
Jess had hoped that statement wasn’t true.
“Thanks.” he said before giving her a quick kiss, then stood up and walked out the door.
It took a few moments for her brain to filter what just happened. When it finally did process those last few minutes, all she could think of as she shuffled up to bed was ‘oh my god he just kissed me and I hope he’s going to be okay’ but she had no idea what was going to be in store later that night.
omfg...cliffhanger.
