I, personally, have kind of been offended when called a "drummer".
No.
I do not "drum".
I play percussion.
I have never played a snare drum, bass drum, tenor drum, etc. I'm a mallet player. Don't get me wrong...I WANT to play them, but i'm trying to get better at mallets first.
Yeah, you can classify me as a drummer, but drummer can mean anything from heavy metal drum set playing to the little drummer boy to a bass drum in the marching band. And when sometimes people think I mean drumset drummer, they look down upon me like I am one of those "wanna bes" in a "wanna be" band. I really don't like being sterotyped and it could just be the kind of people who live in my community and go to my school...I really don't know. That's why i've come to you.
Does anyone else feel the same way? I mean, not exactly like sterotyped like me, but kind of offended when called something that you really aren't? Please share your thoughts.

i personaly have a saying that a percussionist is a drummer that accualy knows what they are doing biggrin

I am a drummer, but not in the band. i hate it when people call the perc. section the "Drum section" cuz there are so many things in Perc. that arent drums. sweatdrop

But more so because to me it emplys Incompatence. When my band director was really crabby he would call us drummers.. that and when he first got us... but thats another story...

It really annoys me too. I correct people on it sometimes actually. People think percussionists only play the drums and that irritates the crap outta me. They say it like its really a simple and easy thing to do, but its not. Percussion is more than just drums

It's really two completely differnt sets of skills. Drummers have the whole more-than-one-beat-at-once thing, percussionists have one very prescise, complex rythm. Not to mention notes, and the various other things we play.

i've played the PERCUSSION book for pit orchestra... it was timpani, vibe, xylo, and even a ship bell... among other things... I AM NOT A DRUMMER! PERCUSSIONSISTS MAKE THE WORLD GO 'ROUND~!

Well...our percussionists act like drummers. All they want to do is hit things randomly and break their drumsticks in half.
Not to mention they've taken a liking to throwing hard objects at me recently...
There's like...three of us who are actually trying to get better, or at least trying.
