(bear with me 5;30am)

Ok, after the release of 300, there seems to have been a rise in numbers when it comes to history degrees stare

All these kids decided that they were experts on Sparta. Fortunately for us, we don't fall into the Hollywood trap.

So why don't we discuss Sparta, the REAL Sparta, everything from their clothes, to Lycurgus' reforms as written by Plutarch, and of course, the historical account for the battle of Thermopylae.

I'm just going to say that despite the possible temptations due to it being the newest secondary source on the battle people should NOT buy Thermopylae: The Battle That Changed the World by Paul Cartledge.

Firstly, he puts forth the theory that the 300 Spartans saw it as a 'suicide mission' then fails to prove his point, and secondly, he's a ******** douchebag that goes so far as to compare that battle and the Spartan's alleged 'suicide run' to the 9/11 attackers.

I never saw 300. My boyfriend called me after he saw it, though. With the level of hyperness he had reached, I really wondered if I'd need to invent a ceiling scraper to get him off the walls. sweatdrop

I've heard it's good, but I'm guessing it's inaccurate?

Please tell me it isn't as bad as Hercules?

I would call it worse than Hercules, Troy and Alexander in one.

I actually liked 300, but then I wasn't really expecting a documentary. It kinda bothered me that all the bad guys were also really ugly, but other than that I thought it was good. Maybe you have to be a guy to appreciate it. Just remember that it was based on a comic book that was inspired by an older movie that was based on the battle of Thermopylae. That's quite a few degrees of separation.

It's 1:30, and I have been overcome with a bout of early morning honesty, and talkativeness.

It was a really fun movie. I'd watch it again. But no, I wouldn't expect a documentary out of it.

I haven't seen it. But I loved the story of Thermopylae BEFORE they made that movie. Ha!

Perhaps I should see the movie before continuing this rant...

SInce I get to answer this question to 13 tears olds:
Xerexes et al. would probably be considered "Bi-sexual" more so than homosexual; or in modern parlance "friends with benefits". After all, if you're the King of Persia a whole smorgasbord of sex-partners would be avaiable to you. Apparently the Persians wrote lots of love poems to their "ephebes".
It was as unremarkable to them as a rap-star or Businessman being found in an ecdysiatic cabaret or renting the services of an escort.

Most of the ancient world is like that though. Especially Rome... it's only modern that the idea of male homosexuality is bad. Damn christians

Rome? I thought that this attraction to the same gender was the only thing that Romans did not favour about the Greeks. No, I am pretty sure that it was the Greeks who were very open about homosexuality and bisexuality. They even had the Sacred Band of Thebes whom Alexander crushed in Battle of Chaeronea.
