Let's play a game, and let's hope my logic makes sense...

State your favourite character from mythology (Pantheon or hero myths)
and then state three pieces of information about that character, that may or may not be common knowledge. If the next person that posts knows other information about that particular character, state it before you type about your own (so my brain can loop around what's going on wink )

One of my favourite characters in mythology is Pandora, as told in Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound. and Hesiod's Works and Days

She was created after Prometheus defied Zeus and stole fire back from the mortals after the Banquet of Mekone, where mortals and gods dined amongst eachother.

She represented all that was evil in the world and was a plague put on men, however, she maintained one thing; hope.

She can often be parralleled to Eve in Genesis, in the Jewish Bible.

Hmm, nothing on Pandora at the moment. That's the trouble with visiting Gaia from the office, all the good books are at home.

I'm fond of Arachne as she's portrayed by Ovid in The Metamophoses. She got a seriously raw deal from Minerva, who basically pitched a fit when Arachne's tapestry turned out not only better than hers but portrayed a whole series of rapes and seductions by the male gods. I'll find a reference to the specific verses later.

My favorite character is from Norse, that is, Scandinavian mythology. His name is Odin, and he rides on Sleipner, his eight-legged horse. Imagine that. gonk xp

I'm also a fan of the Norse myths, probably due to my Viking heritage.

I pick Ragnar Lodbrok (a human king).

}-He had a magic shirt which made him invincible

}-The first recorded use of the Raven Flag was by his children, when they avenged his death.

}-His name means leather breeches, or leather hose, which he got after slaying a dragon.

"The hours of life have glided by;
I fall, but smiling shall I die."

~Death Song of Ragnar Lodbrok (Herbert's tr.)

I think I'm gonna make that my sig.

I'd never heard of Ragnar Lodbrok before. However, when I went to look up more about my pick, I found out he's the stepson of my choice. And that person happens to be Sigurd. So...

-He's the father of Aslaug, who marries Ragnar Lodbrok
-He bathed in dragon blood to become invulnerable wherever it touched his skin
-The opera Siegfried by Richard Wagner is based on this same character

My favorite is from Greek and Roman mythology, Athena/Minerva (respecitively)

About her..
So many things, I have to limit it to three? alright, alright...

She is the goddess of war wisdom and weaving,

She is actually a virgin goddess, who was born fully dressed in armor and fully grown from her father, Zeus/Iuppiter's head.

Aw man, only one left. Curse you blasted restrictions..

She favored the greek hero Odysseus, who was known for his wisdom and for conceiving the Trojan Horse.

.. now if I just time it so that I post after Magister does... muahaha. *knows his favorite too*

Minerva or Athena...my favorite goddess ^^.
>> Is also considered the owl goddess, as she sometimes is described as taking the form of an owl, as well as having one by her side, that and an olive branch.
>>Speaking of the olive branch, the olive tree was the gift Athena gave to the Athenians to name their city after her (this was in a competition against Poseidon, who gave the gift of the horse), she of course won.
>>Athena is not only associated with war, but "smart" or stratigical war, as well as metalwork and cunning.

One of my favorite characters, and favortie tragic character/ hero: Antigone.
From Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone
>>Daughter of Jocasta and Oedipus (as well as sister to Oedipus), Ismene's sister.
>>Defied Creon's degree, and perfomed funeral rites for her brother Polynices.
>>Was sought after by Creon's son Haemon, who later died with Antigone.

Can't say anything about Antigone. Can't remember anything, sorry.

I think my fav character from mythology is Artemis.
- Daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo
- goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, but she also became a goddess of fertility and childbirth (mainly in cities)
- she roamed around (mountain) forests and uncultivated land hunting animals with a bow and arrows

Good taste. *applauds* Sigurd was my second choice.

Artemis, for me.

- According to some texts, was considering breaking her vow of chastity for the hunter Orion. She ended up being beguiled into shooting him.
- May or may not have been a lesbian. Either way, Zeus took on his daughter's form to seduce one of her huntresses, Callisto.
- Was a patron of the slaves. On the day of celebrations for Artemis, slaves were always granted a day of asylum. Some masters found the practice "quaint" and would trade places with their slaves for the day.

Mm. I love Antigone. I fell in love with the play in tenth grade honors' English last year -- mainly because I read as Antigone with a fantastic Creon and a wonderful Haemon. The teacher, I'm happy to say, was smart enough to pick the drama geeks. We made some girl cry. Dx My A.P. summer project was novelizing several acts. I found that fun. I want to finish that, someday.

Personally, I've always associated Hephaestus with metalworking, but cunning and clever war tactics are always Athena's domain.

...Yes, Antigone is such an interesting character...and weird too because she is a woman. I too read it for 10th grade, and then re-read it 12th grade with the entire Oedipus Trilogy ^^.
...hum...Athena, she too is associated with metal work because she is a symbol for civilizations and metal work fits in there. But, yes, your right Hephaestus is the metalwork god.

One of my favourite characters is Calypso from The Odyssey.

She was daughter of Atlas who lived on the island of Malta.
She delayed Odysseus on her island for seven years.
Calypso had promised him immortality if he stayed instead of returning home to Penelope.

Well, that's hard.... I have some in several places, but since someone mentioned Odin earlier, I'll elaborate.

My favorite Norse God is Odin, but one of favorite stories makes me giggle so very much. He has little to do with it. It's how Sleipnir came to be, really. I'll state a few things on both.

Odin had 2 Ravens, Huginn and Muninn (Thought and Memory). Their job was to fly around the world all day, then come back to Odin in Vanhalla and tell him what was going on at night. He had 2 wolves. Geri, and Freki, who he feeds all of his food to each night.

Odin gave up his left eye, to drink from the Mimir's well, which is the well of Wisdom. He also hung from Yggdrasill, the World Tree, for 9 days and nights, pierced by his own spear to learn the Runes.

Now, on to Sleipnir... The way he came about, was during a time when Thor, who was the resident Giant-slayer, was away to the north, slaying Giants, a man came along. He offered to rebuild a wall, in exchange for Freyja, the Moon, and the Sun. Loki agreed before anyone else could reply. The only thing the man required was the help of his Stallion. So, the Gods figured he can't finish it in the time allotted to him, we're safe.

Well.... he started to build it, and was doing a good job. The Gods informed Loki, if the guy recieved the Sun, the Moon, and Freyja? They would torture him eternally.

So, Loki thought up a solution.... He turned into a beautiful white mare, and lead the stallion off. The giant became angered, and began to tear down the wall. Thor appeared and killed him.

...Loki gave birth to Sleipnir, then turned back into Normal Loki.

Okay, now guys, I want you to imagine this --- Think about what FAMILY REUNIONS would have been like!

Sleipnir: I'd love to meet my Mom....
Odin: Hold on....
Loki walks in.
Loki: Hi, Sleppy! I'm your Mommy!
Sleipnir: O_o I don't believe you.
Odin: No, it's true, he turned into a mare once and...
Sleipnir: *traumatized* D:

My other favorites are...:

Hindu: Krishna
Greek: Persephone.
Irish: Danu
