Welcome to the Ionian Steppe, a vast open space of grassland in the center of the continent of Vorendia. It is home to a fair amount of wildlife, and several abandoned settlements, with a huge tower still standing in its very center. The doors are sealed, though, and none can enter...

[Tower Vincinity]
Arkaine and his troops had arrived at the Tower. Again. Four times they had set out from this spot after arriving and finding that Arkaine could neither planeswalk back to Dominaria nor summon reinforcements. All he had at his disposal were his small band of soldiers, a few meek battle spells, and his weapons and armor. So far, they had avoided casualties, finding that the water bubbling from the fountain outside of the Tower could heal their wounds. They were, however, reluctant to find out exactly how far they could push its healing, and had always stayed on the safe side.
Four times now, they had returned to the Tower, after forging their way in each of the cardinal directions, as near as could be determined by the sun here, through swamps, forests, and mountains to the sea. Upon going north, they had found an abandoned keelboat and sailed it to a chain of islands that seemed to circle the continent. The boat was left moored in the mouth of the northern river, while they returned here. There didn't seem to be anyone else around to steal it.
Arkaine was growing impatient with the lockdown on his planestravelling. Even though this land provided ample food and water, even wood and metal for arrows and stones to sharpen swords, he was eager to get out of the eerie lonesomeness and back to his native Otaria. He sighed deeply as he and his troops settled down for the night. Only a single lookout was posted, as the plains had been completely docile except for the occasional predatory cat.

[Open Field]
Another day, another journey. Arkaine had taken the first watch, as he always did, and was the first one to wake at dawn. Since rousing his men, he had decided on another march northward, following the river, to the ship. His plan was to travel along the river, gathering supplies as they went, and then to try sailing the boat entirely around the continent. It was more than likely impossible, but at least it was something they hadn't done yet.
******************** [Half a day's march north of last position]
Arkaine had climbed a rock formation that he had noticed on his last march this way, taking a slight detour westward from the river. He didn't know what he was hoping to see, but still managed to be disappointed when he was greeted with the sight of the same old grasses swaying in the wind, the odd tree dotted around the savannah, and the mountains rising like teeth of a monster ready to swallow the whole continent in the distance. There was something that seemed to be reflecting the light about one hundred yards further on, but it was nothing. Probably just a stupid mirage, he thought. A trick of the light playing games with the minds of men. He was tuning around with a sigh when, all of a sudden, the shine started to zigzag across the field, moving generally westward. He leapt off the rock, landing on his feet, grabbed his swords and dashed off after the thing, hellbent on catching whatever it was. He shouted over his shoulder for his men to follow posthaste, and they jumped to their feet and dashed after him. He couldn't see the light, but he knew vaguely where it should have been, and lost hope when he arrived and coldn't find it. After a moment, though, he heard a faint ringing coming from one direction, and a barely visible light vanishing into the chest-high grass. He formed up his troops, and they set off at a quadruple pace, followign the ringing westward.

[an abandoned settlement]
"tonight we will stay here", said Gradus to his fellow mages. then Gradus sat down, and thought to himself, 'why are we here? how did we get here? and how come we can't get back?'. as he sat there thinking of all these questions, it soon got dark. "Ok, let's get some rest, we might need it, we probably have a day ahead of us tomorrow" Gradus said.

[the abandoned settlement, the next day] Gradus thought to himself "last night, I sensed other planewalkers, to the west", so then he said to his mages, " today, we will travel west!". the mages agreed and they packed up and started moving westward.
