Hopefully this is the right place to post this....

Before I begin, I am a Doctor/Rose shipper, but have a completely neutal opinion on Martha for now, but my speculation on the Evolution of the Daleks, I believe has alot to do with the Doctor/Rose relationship and what it means now with Martha.

So, I finally had the oppritunity to watch Evolution of the Daleks today, and something caught my attention. It was something that the Doctor said about half way through the show.

So, the scene started with the Doctor taking the lift up the Empire State Building and then finding Martha, who was on the top floor looking at blueprints. Since the two were happy to see each other, they hugged. I figured, ok, hugging is good, it was almost like a happy!Doctor-Rose hug. Then, suddenly against everything in the history of New Who was shattered.

"Never waste time hugging."

I thought I heard him wrong, but upon rewatching, yes, the Doctor said to never waste time hugging! Sure, he missed the lift that could have brought them to safety, but there's been worse situations with where the Doctor eagerly accepted a hug from Rose. It is Martha this time around, but still, New!Who and hugging just go hand in hand (no pun intended). Whatever happened to "I'll hug anyone!" said by our beloved Doctor back inThe Long Game?

Maybe I'm thinking too much about this, but I was stunned. If anything, this shows how much he still loves Rose in my opinion and that he's hurting remembering her (obviously). Did anyone else notice that line and what do you think?

Edit by Ceribri - Great topic, only it's somewhat spoiler-ish/will be spoiler-y from what I can tell (I'm apprehensive about getting myself hit with a spoiler) so I'm editing the title a little. ^^

I didn't get why he would say something like that... it was so unDoctorlike.

I just took it as another sign of regret for losing Rose (and - since I'm not a Doctor/Rose shipper - any companion). Maybe he was thinking that if, in the past, he hadn't wasted time hugging he might not have lost companions like Rose.

I don't mean that he thinks that's the only reason but it would be one. Plus, I think the point with Martha is that because of what happened with Rose the Doctor is determined to keep her at a distance. Hugging goes against that.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry, the Doctor says loads of stuff he doesn't really mean.

Yeah, I noticed "Never waste time in a hug" as well. I think it was because the Doctor suddenly realised the seriousness and danger that the situation had escalated into, and that those vital seconds when he hugged Martha had meant they were in even more.

He has hugged Martha in a previous episode (Gridlock) but I think that one was to comfort her.

Yeah, I noticed that. But, I also noticed that this time around (with Martha) the hugs they do share (example the one in Gridlock) are solely to comfort her, I don't think that he gets anything out of it, like I think he did with Rose.

All too true, lol. I just thought it seemed a very unlike him thing to say, regardless of who he'd hugging. Whatever happend to "I'll hug anyone"?

That's exactly what I thought. Not long ago he'd hug just about anything, and now he makes a comment like this....

I say he should forget Rose and stop annoying us about her. The last time a companion had him this obsessed was Adric, and he would be wise enough not to annoy everyone about it... and to be fair Adric was actually killed...

And hey, every time the Doctor regenerates his personality changes. So we already know that Ten is a great big merciless jerk (as he has admitted himself) while Nine was distinctly nicer *cough*cooler*cough*

I understand your point, I do think that its unfair to keep mentioning Rose when trying to introduce a new companion. I always liked Rose, but even though I think they should do something about the way the Doctor's acting, or stop making her hang over like a dark cloud (I hope for the former, but alas, not gonna happen...)

I'm a huge Nine fan too ^_^ Took alot of getting used to, Ten. I like him now, but Nine will always be my favorite hands down! 3nodding

He misses Rose. And that's that. If he can't hug Rose, he's not going to hug anyone.

I think he was just being a wiseass. Like he realized the lift was there, and that the hugging was great, but they shouldn't be doing it RIGHT then cuz there were bigger things to be taken care of.

Of course, I'm not looking for Rose overshadowings everywhere. Some are just blatant, and thats enough for me.

I know when I heard it I was like gonk
noooo he has to hug....

And yes I do think it could be partly to do with The Doctor still hurting about Rose.... maybe he was scared by how he hugged Martha and was reminded about him and Rose.... i dunno....

Well, having lost Rose, and the Daleks STILL being around is a big blow when you're trying to be hopeful. Maybe it was just a little mood swing.

hugging someone is the best thing ever! What do you think when Martha heard that from the Doctor? Poor Martha....Doctor has been a bit harsh on her (without he realising. I believe he think by saying those, he would feel less sadden if Martha's gone). While Martha trust him a lot. It is true & sad to see Rose's gone. But not wise to make others sad even they give all of themselves to Doctor. I couldn't imagine if Martha met 9th instead of 10th. IF Rose was this series' new doctor's companion..... Rose won't shine...
