The tall mare regarded the night sky with a satisfied sigh. All was well tonight in her little piece of the valley. Summer came fast, foals grew and loves blossomed. Save her's of course. The stallions had come and tried to court her. All of them very eligible. All of them good matches for the herd. For her herd. For her people. Yet she hadn't gone through with it for the sake of...

Well. She hadn't known him long. He'd been beautiful though; such a deep blue with eyes of such a red and a voice and words... Like everything she’d imagined. But she'd let the others court her. Well it had made sense, right? Right. But sense didn't have much to do with love at all.

The splotched Aeri sighed to herself and her head drooped listlessly. She ought to have trusted her gut, her heart rather than doing 'what was best'. Now she had no political match and no sweet-voiced stranger who she knew she could've had something true with given a little time.

"Nice going Nyx," she muttered to herself, kicking vaguely at the grass underhoof.

Hasani trudged forward though the night his long mane and tail fluttering on the breeze. Hed gone into seclusion after Nyx had decided she'd wanted totry it out with others.

That had sliced his heart open like a hot knife into butter. His eyes were dark where they had once shonelike the heavens above.

Pausing Hasani tilted his head back and stared up at them, he spotted the north star instatly and began to follow it. His hooves stopped as if they were controlled by some outside force and he looked forward only to wince.

He was stranding now atthe outter boundries of Nyx's territory. Something inside him said to turn away while something else said to move forward. Undecided Hasani stood there as the battle within him raged on.

Sighing to herself, the splotched mare continued on her patrol of the perimeter. Damn her. Damn her for listening to the elders of the herd. Damn her for letting him go. Didn't she know a good thing when it honestly, sweetly gave itself to her? The blue-eyed mare raised her head, fighting against its weight, and scanned her surroundings once more.

Apparently she wasn't alone anymore; another Aeri stood not very far off. By the moonlight it was impossible to tell from the distance she was at whether she knew the broad shape or not.

Well.

It was better safe than sorry.

Giving herself a shake, the orange-blue mare forced herself into a trot on a course to meet the other Nequus. As she drew closer, it began to look familiar. A little way after that her stomach twisted in on itself and stabbed hot guilt into her heart.

Hasani.

Nyx came to a halt a little way away from the deeply coloured stallion. All words seemed to die in her throat. What was he doing here? Did he... Was he giving her another chance? She could only pray it was so.

"...Hasani I..." What could she say? "Hello..." Oh well that was clever. Still, nothing else seemed to be forthcoming and so the brightly coloured mare allowed her head to hang a little again as she awaited a response. She wouldn't blame him if he was only here to kick her in the face.

His body instantly tensed at the voice that ripped into his ear drums. Every muscle sin his body tightened up andheletout a soft sigh before turning twoards her, "...hello...Nyx."

He forced the words form his mouth then turned his head away again and tilted his head back to stare into the heavens.

What were the fates up to? Were they punishig him or did they have something totally diffrent in storefor his life. There was no way to know just yet.

"I've been stupid you know," the splotched mare said before the thought had even fully formed in her mind. Head still bowed, Nyx fixed her eyes on the other Nequus hooves. "I let myself do something I promised daddy I never would. I went against my gut because of pressure from other people. They wanted heirs from me Hasani and a good match to increase our power. That's why I did what I did. Because I bowed to what the elders wanted from me."

How her daddy would have been sad to see her act like that, how he would have been disappointed. Perhaps the fact that she had been raised as a second foal was showing through. No leader with half a brain would give in to the whingings of a few discontented oldsters.

With an effort, the tall mare raised her head. He was looking away. She didn't blame him. "I courted a few Aeri stallions from various different herds and they were all very nice people,” she went on, voice tightly controlled to keep it from shaking. “I sent them all away though. I couldn't bear for... for a mate to be just for foals and for politics. So. Now you know I suppose."

Nyx sighed and closed her eyes for a moment. "I understand if you hate me," she went on after a moment, her voice soft. "And I'm not making excuses either. Just giving reasons, poor reasons though they are. I'm sorry I hurt you Hasani, sorrier than I can ever express and... And I wish I'd taken a chance on what we were beginning to have. I doubt I'll ever have a greater regret than throwing away the chance to be with... well... The stallion of my dreams really."

The stallion nodded his head slightly as he listned to her words but he kept his eyes on the stars above as he tried to figureout how own emmotions. Part of him wanted to go to her and comfort her, tell her it would all be alright. But the other part wanted him to walk away without a word, to hurt her like she had him.

Throwing both options aside he turned his head twoards her then lifted one wing up. It was a silent offer for her to come to him and nestle beneath the soft letaher.

If she didn't than she didnt but for now the offer was put out there for her. He just stood there silently watching her with that one wing raised.

For a moment she thought he was just stretching but after a moment or two what was being offered to her dawned on the Aeri mare. Slowly, carefully, with her head still lowered the splotched Nequus moved under the stallion's wide wing.

She could feel the warmth coming off him now, smell him and see the soft movement of his breathing, the individual hairs of his flowing mane. Hardly daring to breath herself, the blue-eyed mare lent her head into the muscular neck beside her.

"Can you give me another chance, Hasani?" she asked softly. "It's probably more than I deserve but... Well I wouldn't make the same mistake again, that's for sure. If not then... then I understand and if there's anything you want that I can give it's yours and that holds true whether you'll let me try again or not."

After all, she considered as she waited tensely for a response, what was the point of life if you didn't take chances? If you didn't ask then you didn't get and if you ventured nothing you gained the same.

Hasani let hisw ing fall lightly down over her and he closed hsis eyes at her words cosnidering everything. FInally he opend his eyes and looked over at Nyx beside him.

"I dont know what the fates have in store for us, but i don't see a reason not to give you another chance, you were doing what you thought was best for your herd. I can undertsand that more than you'd ever undertsand."

He shook his mane and closed his eyes again, part of him wondered if he was making a good decision.

Nyx smiled hesitantly and nuzzled the strong shoulder beside her. "Thank you Hasani." The elders would get their heirs but it would take as long as it took and alliances could go kick themselves. Nothing in the world could make her give up this chance at a real love, not now that she'd come so close to losing it.

Raising her head, Nyx looked into the red eyes of the stallion who shielded her from the world, who was forgiving her for walking away and then crawling back. "I... I don't know what's coming either," the splotched mare said after a few moments of silent reflection, "but so long as you're a part of whatever future lies ahead I think I'll be happy."

The stallion nodded his head, "we'll just have to wait and see what is in store for us now." He was a little more distant than he hadbeen the first time but that was to be expected he guessed.

Finally he looked back to her and nibbled at her short mane, dont you think ...." he paused for a moment "we should be returning to the herd?" He looked forward again acrossherlands knowing her herd wasn't to far off.

Nyx smiled, shivering pleasantly at the nibble, and nodded. "Yes, this was the end of my patrol; we should get back now." We. That felt good to say. He didn't sound quite as warm and open as he had when they'd first met but she was sure she could work on that. In time he'd trust her again; that or she'd die trying to earn it back.

Hopefully there wouldn't come a time in the near future when she couldn't duck under the gentle warmth of Hasani's wing and be assured by it that all would come out well. Giving the shoulder beside her another nuzzle the splotched mare set off at a slow walk. She hoped that Hasani would match her and keep his wing draped over her back. It felt good there.

Hasai strodeforward with her letting his wing stay drapped lightly over his back, he didn;t want to admitt hat he didn't feel ready to meet the herd but it was nowor never no? Tossing his mane he saw thegroup efore them as they crested a hill.

He paused foramoment the flicked his ears and strode forward once more beside her. Atleast for now hed stand beside Nyx as her friend and lover. His mind drifted to the future for a breaf moment and he wondered about the idea of foals.

The tall mare raised her head as she spotted the figures of those in her herd who preferred the night to the day. They were staring at her but that was hardly surprising given the circumstances she supposed. Here she stood under the wing of a stallion they'd only glimpsed before, if even that and so soon after she’d pushed away so many good suitors too. Well let them stare; they'd get used to him or they wouldn't.

"Alright everybody," the short maned mare called to the small crowd that was gathering. "This is Hasani." And, for now at least they'd get no more out of her on the subject, not until she was sure what the other Aeri wanted to be to her. "Now, the two of us are going to find somewhere to catch up and you lot are going to let us be. Questions can wait until tomorrow night."

So saying, the tall mare set off once again, shooting a smile at the red-eyed stallion beside her. It was good to be the leader and to be able to call the shots like that. For here on, she considered as she glanced at Hasani again, things were only going to get better.

Hasan just gave them a nod and strode along beside her passing them by without any of a hello. Hed get to know them in the feature if events turned out in the way they seemed to be headed.

Flicking his tail he movved with his always resent graceful movemoent with its large strides. He saw a small wooded oasis in the sea of grass ahead and wondered if that was where she was leading him.

Tilting his headthe great stallion let outa soft snort ad flared out his other wing stretching it to the heavens. he hadnt flown in awhile so he was abitout of shape, but atleast he did stretch every so often.

Nyx smiled and nodded to the trees ahead. "That's where we're going; it's a bit more private than most spots here abouts." Spotting her companion's stretch, the Aeri mare's smile widened. "Fancy flying there?" She quizzed with a flick of her short tail.

She was glad none of her people had decided to raise their voices in question of the handsome stranger at her side. She needed that breathing space of a night and a day to get to know him again herself; to find out how he had changed. How she herself had changed.

Still, tomorrow night the moon watchers would meet him properly and the dawn after that the sun watchers. They would come to like him in the end, she suspected. One thing she knew about this for sure, and that was that her father would have been much prouder of this move than he would have been of the best of matches she could have made with influential stallions.

Love might be only love but life was only life and, so far as Nyx saw it, one could not truly exist without the other. So she had been taught, so she believed.
