Hello,
This is your
tyrant Vice Captain speaking. This post will eventually become a 'rules' topic of some sort, when we decide on a structured set of rules. For now, I'll just cover a few basics; and yes, I'll be speaking for the guild's owner in addition to myself and any other staff that may come along at a later time, however, she can drop by and add her two cents at a later time. Certain guild rules may be negotiable; if you believe something is unfair or too harsh speak up and we'll discuss it.
First and foremost:
We do not support illiteracy here. While we don't expect this to be a problem we will require at least an attempt at speaking proper English here. We're understanding about people whose first language is not English and that everyone slips up occasionally so neither of these is a big deal. Consistent use of chat speak will not be permitted, however, and
will result in a banning. Needless to say, it is fine to use chat speak if you are insulting the fools who use it consistently out of ignorance. One of the things this guild is intended to be is an 'oasis' of sorts when people need a break from the desert of stupidity that is the majority of Gaia.
Secondly, on the subject of flaming and flame wars: The position I take on this can essentially be reduced to two words: s**t happens. People make mistakes, get irritated with each other, flaming starts. No big deal. While ad hominem attacks aren't exactly the best thing for use in a debate I'll be understanding if name calling starts mixed in with any sort of real arguments and I'll tend to let it go unless it turns into something ridiculous like sheer screaming and name calling.
(This includes if I'm being insulted; I do not wish to be given any special treatment due to having a position of power if I do or say something stupid.) I can't speak for any other staff in this regard, though, so be careful not to let things get too heated in a topic you've noticed them visiting often.
ninja That said, if I find that two people turn into
duelists I may consider a banning, assuming they're irritating the fellow board members.
Third, lest there be any confusion I will make it known as of now that knowledge in Latin and/or Greek is
not a requirement. I myself have to admit to not possessing knowledge of either language, and this place is intended primarily for a cultural study of those two areas which can be done in English, even if one will be further ahead in their studies by learning those languages. That said, the owner seems to have some ideas about coaching the community in both Latin and Greek, and perhaps even I'll pick up a thing or two when that happens. I assure you, if I can learn something about either of these languages, the rest of you can.
ninja However, I digress. My point is that we WILL deal in translations and deal in an abundance of them, just like we'll deal in the languages of antiquity. I'll make up for my deficiency in Greek and Latin with my knowledge of translations of important works and studies in the field, I assure you.
wink This is all for now.
