I love Gaelic music! For a good 6 months it was all I would play. However, I enjoy playing the aires and slower stuff rather than the reels and jigs.

The airs and slower songs are prettier, but I love playing jigs and reels... as long as I've had enough practice to pull them off. I also like celtic fiddling better than american... but "Arkansas Traveler" is so much fun to play. whee

Have you ever heard of a band called SOLAS? They're an irish band with I think three members that remain constant always, and several that have come and gone. Two of the regulars play a whole bunch of different instruments. Nothing all that special, but they can play the harmonica, guitar, various woodwinds alright. But the star of the band is Winnifried Horan, the violinist. She is so good... without her, the band would be popular in its hometown and to its small group of fans, but hardly anyone would ever hear of them. But with Winnifried... the band is sublime. So pretty. And they've got a good singer too.

Some of the best fiddeling books out there are the Fiddlers Philharmonic series (light blue). There's that and the Fiddlers Philharmonic Encore book (red). They're really good if you want fast and easy fiddle tunes to learn/practice.

Oh, there's this one book that a student of mine has. She bought it last year and we've been using it lately. It was published by MelBay.
Here's the link.
It's a fantasmatically awesome book.
You can't buy it through Shar or any other sheet music catalogue that I have seen. Pity, that. I've seen it once at a local music store but they closed, so...
Online buying-ness!

I actually prefer to learn fiddle tunes by ear, if I can. You won't always get all the notes, but that's the cool part; you make your own version, like people used to.

By the way, anyone whose into Celtic fiddle should catch the band Teada (www.teada.com). Their fiddler is amazing.

Celtic Fiddle is my lifeblood.
But I can't answer the poll! I play Cape Breton style Fiddle! I guess if I had to choose one of the two, it'd probably be Scottish. Cape Breton is closer to that, and Irish kind of bores me. It's nice for a short while, but it all starts sounding the same very quickly.

If anyone is interested in playing Cape Breton Fiddle, I absolutely recommend the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It's a fantastic experience. I've been 3 summers now, and will continue to go until I'm a poor college kid. Hopefully, I'll be able to go even then, but we'll have to see. Here's their website: The Gaelic College

They offer courses in the following disciplines:
* Great Highland Bagpipe
* Highland Dance
* Cape Breton Fiddle
* Piano Accompaniment
* Cape Breton Step Dance
* Celtic Harp
* Scottish Small Pipes
* Gaelic Song
* Pipe Band Drumming
* Weaving
* Gaelic Language & Song
* Bodhran

I've personally taken Fiddle, Stepdancing, and Weaving, and I highly recommend them all.
