Ok... We all know this is a hard question but I want to know... who would you have to say is your favorite Jazz Singer(s) or Instrumentilist(s)? I have many but I also want to expand my knowledge (sp) by listening to more and it would be great to hear some! Thanks alot!

By the way.. I have to say Billy Holiday is my favorite (she is a girl) when i heard her strange fruit song i was soooooo moved and was crying really hard. I never thought of discrimination like that... she wrote the lyrics herself and would weep in the end of the song. She is also one of the few Jazz singers i know that gets the feeling to sing from her whole body, heart, and soul and is an inspiring singer!

I think my favorite is John Coltrane.

Idk, something about him just seems so cool, and intriguing ^ ^

I don't really have a favourite.
I'm going through a big Chick Corea thing right now though.
He's amazing.

Manhatten Transfer is always good, that's the kind of style I sing in my Jazz Choir.
Frank Sinatra's good here and there, as is Bobby Derin. Ella Fitzgerald almost goes without say.
Most of the stuff I tend to listen to are things done by local colleges. There are a good bunch of Jazz Choir's in my area.

I tend to be obsessive with Frank Sinatra songs and voice, so I'm pretty sure he is my favorite. Ella Fitzgerald songs are the best to sing along with though... There are just so many good ones!

Yes i would have to say Frank is my favoite singer although you could say he's more of a crooner than a jazz artists. He has worked with some of the greatest musicians that ever graced a stage though. My favorite performance/cd of his would be with the great Cound Basie Orchestra which is Sinatra at The Sands

So I'm going to say a few then

Buddy Rich
Count Basie
Sonny Rollins
Dexter Gordan
Charlie Parker
Maceo Parker
Bob Mintzer
Victor Wooten
Frank Sinatra
Ella Fitzgerald
Billy Holliday
Sarah Vaughan
Diana Krall

hmmm i've listed more than i was going to originally... see what happpens when you get me started xp

I really like Ella Fitzgerald doing Mack The Knife. She's a great jazz singer. Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about singers. Most of my jazz is of the instrumental variety. And everyone knows I'm a Steve Gadd fanatic.

I really like the Glenn Miller Band, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald etc etc.

But I really really love heart (in a not gay way) Louis Armstrong. Why? Ever heard of the song "gone fishin"? Or I think thats what it's called. sweatdrop Yeah, that was stoner music before there was stoner music! wink

yeah my fave is the duke, I love his cd Such Sweet Thunder, which is his take on shakespeare it is sooo cool. I also like the dave brubeck quartet, big bad voodoo daddy, and gershwin among others (I'm fairly ecclectic when it comes to jazz sounds)
