My school runs from 7th-12 grade (weird i know), so i was so good in my 7th grade yr that i was accepted into the HS Marching Band so everybody knows me already and respects as a really good player (i'm 2nd chair out of 5 clarinets in concert band). My BD wants me to try-out for drum major so i said ok cuz i am a suck-up; but he also said that he most likey wont give the part cuz i'm only going to be a freshman next yr. but that doesn't make sense cuz i've been in the band just as long as the up coming sophmores!!! crying sweatdrop

I have a lot of friends in the band including seniors but i don't think my BD sees that. I just hope he'll consider me. cry

Wish me luck try-outs are on monday!!! eek

I think someone should be in band at least two years before they are given the chance at the position of drum major. You might be a really good performer but you probably don't have the leadership skills and knowledge about the band that you need to fullfill the duties and requirements of that position at this point. Wait another year, you'll have a better chance.

Well if your school starts in 7th grade I guess that's fine.

BUT OMG OUR CENTER DRUM MAJOR NEXT YEAR IS A SOPHOMORE (freshman now ...our school starts at 9th grade)

I'm going to be a junior and drum major also, but I guess I just don't think that someone with only 1 year of marching experience should be teaching seniors how to march, unless they're really REALLY good...it just doesn't seem right to me..

I'd say no, since people most likely won't respect a younger drum major. The youngest that we've had was a sophomore. There's a difference between being respected as a musician and being respected in a leadership position, such as drum major or section leader.
