It had taken Vanyel the better part of the day to convince Kitten to allow her to go to the library on her own. After reading through all of the older woman's books, the orange haired child simply couldn't sit still. She needed to read, and she needed to read something new. Now.
Kitten wasn't able to take the girl to the library though, she had to go work at her other job at some stuffy research center (who knew Kitten had any brains?) and Kitten had yet to take her little scent along for the ride. Usually she left someone in charge of the little girl. There was no one to help her today though, so she finally agreed that allowing a librarian to watch her child would be better than leaving her home alone.
The interior of the library had put Vanyel into a state of awe for a good portion of half an hour, her jaw slack and eyes misty with adoration. She'd never seen so many books in her life and she'd never felt more eager to read until her eyes fell out. Once she'd snapped out of it, she'd found a book about ancient civilizations and hunkered down in one of the plush chairs set aside for browsers.
This would be a nice, relaxing day.

A snicker escaped the lips of one Anbu, who was currently hiding behind a bookcase, peeking out between a pair of books at the green haired teenager it lived with. She was fuming mad, harisen-style paper fan in hand as she searched for her charge. Not seeing Anbu, Kyoko finally gave in with a sigh. It always came home, after the damage had been done...She trudged out from the library, head hanging down. She had a doctor's appointment to go to anyways...
Anbu snickered again and emerged from behind the bookcase, ball happily bouncing slightly behind it, attached to Anbu's wrist by a thin cord. Freedom for a few hours, at the very least! And no fan to be hit by! Anbu winced at the memory of the whack it'd gotten a few hours earlier. Anbu knew another way to push his 'keeper's buttons now, however!
The Scent's visible dark blue eye blinked as it caught sight of someone very...orange. Upon further inspection, the person was a girl who appeared about its age. Perfect! Someone to play with! Anbu's lips tweaked into something between a smile and a grin as it walked over to the girl, who looked quite comfy in the plush chair she was in. Of course...being Anbu, it approached from behind the chair.
Making sure the ball was firmly attached to its wrist once more, it jumped up and hooked its arms on the back of the chair, so it could look down at the girl.
"BOO!"

Not to say that Vanyel wasn't startled, but it seemed that the inner calm the girl had achieved while reading mearly made her jump slightly in the chair. Any other time she might have just thrown the book across the room with a yelp that would shake the entire structure of the building. Orange eyes peered upwards as her head tilt back, an inquisitive expression upon her face.
"Boo? Why boo? Can't you see I'm reading?" she asked, though it didn't really matter to her. She wasn't mad she was interrupted, though she thought that maybe she should have been.
The boy was...weird to say the least in Vanyel's eyes, but his hair was really something. She couldn't help but oggle the black locks and strip of stars glittering there. Well, it was a guy, right? It looked like a guy at the very least and that's all that Vanyel had to go by, so you couldn't blame her for latching onto the first gender she could.

Anbu gave the girl a 'well duh' look. "Of course. That's why I did it." With a 'hup', Anbu let go of the back of the chair, landing soundly on its ball, and bounced to the front of the piece of furniture, smile back on its face. This girl was quite interesting. The trick that normally had its mother half-way across the room in a hurried jump-step had only fazed this orange girl slightly -of course, Anbu didn't really understand the meaning of 'calm'-. That, and Anbu could smell something coming from her. A somewhat tangy, sweet scent of oranges; quite different from the sickly sweet, cotton-candy-ish smell that graced Anbu's own biology.
Was she like itself? Anbu hadn't seen her at the shop before it escaped, so she was most likely a bit older than itself. Or newer. That was possible too. Never rule out a possibility. Ruling things out means less ammo to use later! But off that train of thought...
This girl was definitely worth looking at as a playmate. "Want to come and play? I'm certainly more fun than any old book." Ah...playtime...Anbu lived to play, though its version of play sometimes veered far from society's norm. After all...the last three kids Anbu had played with had ended up running to their mothers, crying that 'the kid with the mask' was being mean. Spoiled Anbu's fun and had Kyoko apologizing for her Scent's behavior. The second one of those kids had been what caused Kyoko to finally make the paper fan it dreaded so much.

Vanyel lifted her brows as she watched the...boy and the ball. Yes, he would be refered to as a boy by her, atleast until she was informed otherwise. Too much time and thought could be wasted on the subject, really. "It's not very nice you know, to go interrupting people while they're reading. Some people really like to read," she'd finish with a nod, closing her book and setting it in her lap. It was a large, dusty looking book that appeared to have been abandoned by human-kind all together.
Like the boy, Vanyel noticed a tainted sweetness coming from the boy, but she found it far less odd than people thinking she smelled like oranges. Oranges didn't have that strong of a smell she thought, so someone eating them didn't usually mean they would smell like them. Cotton-candy on the other hand was like a plague in her opinion, the smell never went away. Wrinkling her nose Vanyel shook her head, "Play? What do you want to play? I can't imagine a game being better than a book," she said, though more to herself than to her company.
Shugging, Vanyel set the book off to the side and pushed her way out of the chair that as designed to seat people much larger than herself. "I suppose if you really want to play then I can play with you, especially since you probably wont find many other kids around here." A warm smile lit up the girls face and made those big orange eyes twinkle behind their thick frames.

Anbu looked quite befuddled. Read...for fun? It hadn't seen Kyoko do that...and Gekkou...well he was 'Gramps'. Old guys always though stuff like that was fun. "How can you read so much for fun?!"
It looked up, smiling. "Easy! Tag! The thrill of racing around like bumper cars!" The grin on Anbu's face was hard to miss. Without Kyoko around, it could play any game it wanted to without the threat of that damned paper fan.
Anbu looked victorious as the orange girl consented to play with it. "Okay!" It suddenly got a sly look on its face. "Wanna know my name?"

Vanyel let out a soft sigh at the question she'd heard more than she could think of. How could reading not be fun? Learning was the most exciting thing she could think of besides meeting new people, but since this 'boy' was a new person she deemed him just as worthy of interacting with. "Reading is fun because books have been aroung for a really long time and I can learn about things that interest me through them." she replied simply, fluffing out her overly-long sleeves. She didn't feel natural with them pushed up to her elbows.
Tag? Vanyel wasn't sure she could comply with that request. "Is there something we can play that doesn't require us disturbing everyone around us? And also a game that doesn't threaten my glasses too much?" Vanyel disliked running. Not that she didn't dislike physical activity, as a matter of fact the girl though kick ball and swimming were quite fun, but she was usually able to remove her glasses for such things. Plus, they were in the library; tag was not a game for the library.
"Your name? Sure, I suppose I'd like to know your name." She didn't see why she wouldn't want to know the kid's name.

Anbu was interested now. "Learn things? Do they have any books on games?" It was starting to run out of ideas with what Kyoko gave it. Its guardian was happy if she had music and friends.
Its face fell at the 'no disturbing people' option. But games were MEANT to distract! "Aww..." But Anbu wanted to play, and wanted to play now. So it wasn't going to risk losing a playmate who had agreed to play. "Uh...Hide and seek? Or...Uh..." It scratched the top of its head, thinking.
It smiled while it was thinking. "I am Anbu!"

The studious girl let out a giggle and a nod, "But of course you can learn more about games in books. There are tons of books that talk about games of the past, games of the future, the evolution of games, scores of games. There's just about anything you would want to know more about games in books!"
Hide and Seek? That didn't sound like too terrible of a game Vanyel supposed. "Alright Anbu, I'll play hide and seek with you, but only if we play in the park across the street." The girl still didn't want to interrupt the other people in the library. "My name is Vanyel by the way, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Anbu cheered. "You must show me then sometime! I love games! Especially the ones that make you think!" The Scent had a large grin on its face as it slipped off its ball, feet hitting the floor below.
It thought for a moment, then nodded. "Alright...more space to play and places to hide!" It made a bow to Vanyel, looking very theatrical. "Oh no, Vanyel. It is my pleasure to meet you." Though it could be the little troublemaker, it knew that being nice shook things up and was more likely to get it its way...It motioned to the exit. "Shall we?"

Vanyel winced slightly at the cheer. Didn't the kid know they were in a library? A place where it was supposed to be quiet! At the sight of the surrounding adults turning to look at them and murmurr under their breath about irresponsible parents, Vanyel ducked her head, a deep blush on her cheeks. Grabbing the boys hand she tugged him out of the library as fast as she could.
"You can't do that," she hissed softly as they jumped down the stairs to go across the street to the park. His pleasantries were not missed on the girl but she wasn't in the perfect mood to reply to them and so she let go of the kids hand and skipped the rest of the way to the park.

Anbu squeaked as the girl dragged it from the library. It was the one that did the leading, not others! Anbu pouted as Vanyel let go of its hand.
"Do what? Be excited? Last I knew, it was a natural thing." It followed the girl, ball now bouncing behind it, looking just as dejected as the rubber sphere's owner. Anbu decided it wasn't having any fun now. Maybe it would get better once they reached the park...It hoped so. Despite her outburst of dragging it about, Anbu found Vanyel to be quite fascinating. Then again...anyone who could read that much and not be lulled to sleep within the first two pages was someone to be respected.
It just meant they had a high tolerance for torture in the Scent's eyes.

"You can't be loud in a library. It's fine to be excited, but there's a time and place for being loud about it." The girl nodded as she crossed her arms over her chest, looking very sage-like at the moment. For a moment she thought to herself, something that happened a lot but people rarely noticed the funny looking crinkle at the corner of her eyes that appeared as if she were squinting.
How exactly did one play hide-n-seek again? That was what they were playing, right? Oh no, did she put her book away properly? Would she be able to find the book later and be able to read more of it?
The girl's mind was just a constant whirl-wind of silly, insignifficant thoughts. "So when do we start?"

Anbu nodded, silent. Normally, it would have been quite vocal on its thoughts...But there was something about the orange smelling girl that demanded attention and respect...besides the large book she had been reading. It looked around the park, seeking a good spot for a 'base'.
"So the library is not a place to be loud...I'll remember that." It spotted a suitable tree and grinned, pointing to it. "Over there! We'll start over there!" The dark Scent made its way over to the tree, grinning. "Want the rules of the game?" Despite Anbu's penchant for mischief, rules were important to a game. And it woud abide by the rules laid down. Now if there weren't any...then it had free reign to do as it pleased.

Vanyel took a step to follow the boy before she heard a very familiar voice calling out her name from somewhere behind her and ther person it belonged to was probabbly standing across the street on the steps of the library with a very angry expression.
Wincing, Vanyel turned around and let out a soft sigh, her shoulders sagging as she hung her head. Her mother was likely angry that Vanyel had left the library she'd spent all morning to be allowed to visit. Not only that, but Kitten was probably also pissed that she'd went off and crossed the street on her own.
With a forlorn look, Vanyel turned her head to call to the other child, "Anbu, I'm sorry, I need to go. I promise next time we will play whatever you want," the girl offered, lifting a hand to wave as she forced a smile before dashing off across the street towards the very angy woman in a lab coat.
