The black, white and spotted male walked through the forest quietly, licking the last of his morning meal from his lips. It had been the first decent scrap of meat he'd had in the last few days and had been scrawny and thin. Nothing, he thought, seemed to be very plump at this time of year including himself.

With dwindling numbers his pack had rarely gone hunting for large game in the end and a constant, low hunger level had become almost normal. With only himself to feed, free from the burden of caring for others, he was managing allright and despite his thin belly was actually putting on weight. All the travelling had hardened his muscles, too and sharpened wits which had begun to slow with the repetetive daily life of his former small pack.

The somewhat brightly coloured wolf found it a little easier to hunt in the forest than he had in the open mountain lands of his homeland. Here, mixed amongst the dense leafyness and undergrowth his dotted, mixed up patterning made him blend well what with most of his prey being unable to see colour in the same way.

He yawned - a long, luxurious sighing yawn which portrayed his general feeling at the moment. He was bored and didn't know where to head now. One last lingering lick at the vestiges of leftover breakfast on his muzzle and he began to pick his way through the forest again in a random direction.

Oh, she was so close~! Aria was determined to snatch the racing hare, her muzzle mear inches from its tail. If she could just bridge that small gap, if she could just swipe at the rabbit with her paws, trip it up, or snatch it with her teeth it would all be over! Dinner would be with her!

Emerald eyes were on her target. She'd practically forgotten about the woods that surrounded her, her body deftly dodging trees and bushes. The rabbit continued to zig-zag, searching for a spot to burrow, but one wrong move and it would find itself within Aria's jaws.

Almost there. . . .

And then it happened.

Dodging a tree, the rabbit flew past Elysion's paws and through the opposite bushes. Aria, close behind, saw the black and teal male only too late. With a starteled yelp, the femme leaped to the side, hoping upon hope that her momentum wouldn't send her crashing and tumbling in to the beast before her.

Paws slipping out from under her, Aria did miss Elysion by a mere inches, and instead took a very ungraceful tumble in to the nearby bushes. Coming to a stop, it took the lavender female a few moments to figure out what just happened. . .

There had been a rabbit, she'd been a moment away from descending upon it, and then . . . she'd missed a moving tree. She'd caught a sight of teal, blue and white leaves, and had tried to jump out of the way. Instead, she landed in a bush, and had lost her meal.

. . . .snap.

Gingerly rolling to her feet, sure that the only thing hurt was her pride, Aria hopped out of the bush, leaf covered, and more than a little flustered.

Elysion was rarely ruffled. It was not in his nature to act over-quickly on things and that included surprises. Nothing had prepared him, though, for a female to come tumbling out out nowhere, almost hit him, skid around and careen into a nearb bush. He stared at her for a moment, eyes wide, head tilted quizically as he stood to inspect the recently hurtling female.

As she got to her feet the surprise and slight tinge of worry about what such a tumble might have done to the frenzied apparition in front of him began to fade from Elysion's face leaving a slightly wry grin. It seemed one rabbit had made a very lucky escape, he thought, as he padded a little closer. The dark coated male examined her thoroughly, wondering what to make of her. She certainly didn't seem unfriendly in fact all she seemed at the moment was embarrassed...

She was all over pale purple, a little lighter around her eyes, a marking on her foreleg. Aquamarine eyes of a tone similar to some of his spots seemed to almost glow against their contrastin background. She reminded him of the small purple flower that grew on tall stalks and had a strong smell. Lavendar, that was it... Or perhaps more of the hue of the higher-growing heathers which cling onto rocky crevasses here and there.

He grunted slightly as he realised he'd been staring and gruffly covered with a brisque question. "You allright?" All the poetic visions in his mind were not matched by any similar linguistic ability.

It wasn't that he couldn't have waxed lyrical if he really tried but that he had felt subtly discouraged by his parent and peers to not spout forth so much of what went on his mind. He had grown a thick exterior over that internal eloquence and was now more inclined to be gruff than grandiose with his words.

Stepping out of the bushes, Aria took a moment to shake out her plush coat. Even during the warmer summer months, her fur had always been thick. It added to her elegance, or so she liked to believe, but such a coat didn't come without a price. Leaves, twigs and pineneedles all stuck to it quite easily WITHOUT crashing headfirst in to foliage. Craning her neck to peer at her coat, the female heaved an inward sigh.

Instead of dinner today, she'd be grooming.

C'est la vie...

Walking-tree forgotten, only when he spoke did Aria turn her gentle gaze on the male before her. An amused and light-hearted smile crept upon her face, and her blue eyes danced with inner mischief and humor. "I appear to be all in one piece," she assured, taking a few delicate steps around Elysion to be sure. "And what of you, my fine sir? I didn't bowl you over in passing, did I?" A gentle laugh as she allowed her lavender tail tip to wag ever so softly. "I must admit I can't remember whether we made contact or not."

It was true. Everything had happened so quickly! First she'd been inches from a feast, the next she found herself dizzy and collapsed in a bush! Strange how quickly the world moved. Maybe next time she'd better be more alert when it came to exactly where her paws were taking her.

A look over at the male - he seemed all right. She did hope the gruffness in his voice wasn't her own doing, but merely the cause of personality. Some wolves were more touchy than others, especially when it came to meeting strangers. And though Aria hadn't intended to bump in to him, much less go flying past, she really didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

Hopefully the bright and exotic coloured male could forgive her clumsiness.

Elysion cocked his head to one side, considering the female for a moment. She seemed friendly enough and in relatively good humour after her tumble. At least she wasn't the type to whine at any little mishap. With a rolling shrug of his shoulders he let his rump thump back down onto the ground, his tail returning her friendly wag with one of it's own - stirring up the small tree blossoms that were beginning to collect on the forest floor.

Spring was soon going to give way to summer and travelling in the jovial weather had put Ely in a good mood this morning. Despite the near miss he smiled at the lavendar female. "No you didn't hit me" he confirmed, a slight glimmer of amusement coming into his eyes "never seen a wolf who did acrobatics like a squirrel before" he added, a little teasingly. To him her antics had seemed almost akin to the movements of the small mammals... He had often sat and watched them decided not to prey on them just to see their acrobatics. Fast flying flurries of fur who twisted and turned and sometimes, like this female had just done, completely whirled head over heels.

His laugh, when it came, was a brief bark but sincere. He often sounded gruff in his manner but he was relatively gentle, his ouside manner (if not his speech) matching the internal tranquility and inquisitiveness he had about the world. He had not, up until this point, come into contact with any others on his travels and decided to take this interruption as an excuse to take a break and perhaps make a new friend. She certainly seemed amenable enough.

"I'm Ely" he said, by way of introduction.

Aria blinked at Elysion, before she ducked her head in a moments relapse of embarrsment. If she had an ability to blush, she would have, though her eyes only glimmered brighter in amusement. "It wasn't a partiuclarly pleasant tumble," she admitted with another gentle laugh. "But I suppose we all have our own particular talants. What wolves in the forest can claim they're as lithe as a squirrel?" It was a good compliment, or so the lavender femme decided. "But here's hoping to avoid a repeat performance." Lifting her head, ears pricking foward, she studied the unusual coloured male before her.

He seemed to be a good sort, neither overly hostile or particularly submissive. Solid in stance, and friendly in conversation. His coat, though, was what truly interested the female. It was so very unusual! Black and white with beautiful spots of all glamoriously bright shades of teal and blue-violet. The more she lookd at the darker coloured blue, the less she could tell whether it was true-blue or held the slightest tones of purple within it. Hmm. . . maybe it was just her imagination.

Either way, he was quite unusual but very striking. Amazing she didn't see him from farther away, then again, she did have her eyes on a fast-footed meal.

Realizing she was staring, Aria shook her head and offered an apologetic smile. "Forgive my indescretion," she remarked, tail wagging lightly behind her. "I suppose I have a touch of fur envy. Such beautiful cool colours," she admired, words soft before abruptly responding, "You remind of a summers eve, the stars dancing in a blackened sky" That was it! Perhaps it was strange, and perhaps Aria was only imaginative, but it was what the male was the spitting image of. Sure, his spots weren't white. . . and the teals and blues only appeared painted upon the horizon during fall and winter. . . but . . . . in Aria's imaginative, almost artistic mind, the rings and spots that covered his back were nothing but the dancing rays of light she witnessed every night.

"I'm Aria," she finally got around to responding, quite finish with admiring his coat. "And it is quite a pleasure to meet you." She was sincere in her words. It wasn't often she had an opportunity to run into another wolf. Funny how today it was a literal affair.

((Forgive her artistic nature. ._.; Can't have a wolf named Aria without her being somewhat artistic, and musical, and all that fun stuff. *laughs* But his spots do remind me of Van Gogh's starry night, with the blues and cool colours. . .again, even if the spots aren't yellow. ))

The onslaught of words concerning his coat somewhat embarassed him, not being used to such effusive praise over his pelt. He wasn't shy but he had rarely had anyone mention it beside his mother. He wasn't the kind to take praise badly though. If someone took the time to point out something they liked in you then he felt it would be rude to dispute what they said by being overly modest. "Thank you" was all he said, though. "My mother used to say it reminded her of bubbles in a pond."

Personally he had little opinion on it beyond how it affected his hnting. Despite being able to see beauty in the forms of naturea nd other wolves he had never been prone to staring at himself and rarely had a pond been still enough to present him the oppertunity to do so. He felt that he should return the compliment but this was where he was unsure. He could wax lyrical internally but saying such things out loud was hard. He had to admit that it wasn't her coat really that drew his eye but the contrast that her green eyes against it. They seemed glimmering deep pools - like the colour of deep ice in a winter pond. She had commented on his coat, though and he felt that a reciprocation should be made.

"I must admit I've rarely seen a coat the colour of yours before. It's nice." he really, really wasn't good at externalising his words. His internal sigh was long and drawn out. He knew it had been a peculiarity of his pack not to like effusiveness in a male but this female didn't seem like she would be bothered by it. Years of conditioning, though, clung him and weren't so easily shaken off.

"And a pleasure for me too.. I've been travelling a while without bumping into any other wolves."

Aria ducked her head as he returned her compliment with one of his own. Her bright emerald gaze glanced down at her paws, investigating her coat with inward speculation. She appreciated the compliment, but didn't particularly agree with it. A strange colour? Perhaps, perhaps. She was a lone shade of lavander, somewhere between the runoff of violet and pink.

A good colour, perhaps, but ever so bland. One dominant shade, with a strange symbol upon her forepaw and a lightening around her eyes. Aria often envied the more varied coats of her peers. Wouldn't it be lovely to have spots like this Elysion? Blacks, whites, teals and blues splotched and splattered. Or what of wolves with stripes and spots and spirals - wolves whose fur had been kissed by the sunsets and sunrises of the world.

If wolves were truly painted by the world in which they lived, then Aria had been dropped in a shade of pink and had quickly been forgotten.

Still, Ely's words were accepted. There was no reason for him to lie to her about her coat, and he had taken the trouble to return the kindness. Bushy tail wagged behind her as she settled gently upon her haunches.

"You and me both!" She concurred, nodding her head amicably. For all the foreign scents and packlands she'd avoided, it was strange how long she'd gone without a spot of company. Sure, she was used to loning life, but that didn't mean the girl didn't like a spot of company from time to time. Today would be a good chance of pace. "I was beginning to think I was surrounded by ghosts and kept up at night by the lone calls of phantoms," a delighted smile as her tail curled delicately around her paws. Oh, what an imagination she had. . .

He probably thought her foolish and ignorant, but she was nothing of the sort. Aria merely had quite the creative mindset, and it occassionally ran away with her. To her, there was nothing more glorious than the idea of 'what if. . '. What if the woods truly WAS filled with supernatural creatures, what if she DID sing at the top of her voice in the middle of the night, beckoning and welcoming the strangers around her. What would happen if she ran as fast as her legs could carry her, blissfully free from the constraints of the world, what if she had wings? Idea and thought, no matter how ludicrous, was what brought this female joy.

Aria lived for music, for passion, for the secrest of everyday. So speaking her mind so freely, so openly, occassionally caused her to intimidate or discourage potential friends.

A little grin, and she reached out to paw lightly at the black and coloured male. "A most glorious break from the monotony of my shadow. Tell me, have you traveled these lands frequently or are you as much a stranger to these parts as myself?"

Slightly vary-toned green eyes peered at the violet coat again, thinking how strange it was for a wolf to be so singularly coloured. It was unusual for him and was, in fact, pleasant to the eyes. He had wondered once what made some wolves have such bright and bold coats as his own and his family and others have pelts which displayed singular colours with a dazzling strength. It was obvious if anyone cared to look that pups were often a mix between their mother and father with some even taking after grandparents or close relatives. How was it chosen though? Who decided which coat to draw upon when making a pup...

He himself had the colours of his grandfather mixed with the patterning similar to that of his father but restricted to his back, tail, face and legs where his father was completely covered. He also had white markings like that of his mothers... His brothers and sisters all looked different to himself why did they not all look the same if they came from the same basic stock? It got him to wondering what Aria's parents must have looked like for her to have such a coat.

Like Aria, Elysion's mind often wandered away with him. He was not so prone to flights of fancy, though, but deeply curious about the world around himself. He often wondered why? a habit which left his mother frazzled when he was young and often asked questions. He had somewhat grown out of that now but still...

Her mellifluous words flowed over him - startlingly refreshing to a wolf used to more succinct language. "I haven't been here before, no" he answered, shifting his weight a little to one side, his tail still lazily sweeping the ground. There was nothing so good as interesting company, he believed. "So... how did you come to be out here by yourself anyway?" he asked, curiousity overcoming propriety.

Aria may have lost dinner, but she'd found a spot of company instead. Pleased by such luck and the twists of fate, the lavender wolf was in no hurry to be on her way. This land seemed chalk full of life, and if rabbit wasn't yet on the menu, berries or carrion would take its place. For now, she had other things to think about besides her next meals.

Relaxed and setteled, her ears swiveled to focus on the unusually speckeled male before her. "I've been alone for quite some time," she admitted, a small smile curving her delicate features. "I left my pack and family about two years ago and haven't looked back since." Oh, and didn't it feel like ages? How life threw curves upon the path one hoped to walk, amazing how life hadn't worked out at all how she once originally had planned. There was no regret in her voice, though her eyes dimmed in a moments recollection.

Part of her wondered how her family and friends were, if life had treated them well, and what new experiences they'd discovered. Were they all healthy and happy? Had they each been blessed with their hopes and dreams and fancies? Part of Aria even brushed upon the thought of returning home. . . .

. . . . but the thought was brief and momentary. It wasn't something she'd ever actively do.

"I ran with a dear friend of mine, for awhile," she explained, a fond warmth entering her expression, a knowing gleam brightening her gaze. Ah. . . . now weren't those the days? "Wild, carefree, foolish - we were going to take on the world, you know," she laughed at her expensive, rolling her eyes and wagging her tail. "But he's long since gone and I've been drifting throughout the woods ever since. Not a particularly exciting story, I fear," she almost apologized, ducking her head with a smile.

"But it's been quite the experience." Licking her black nose, the she wolf tilted her head, questioning Elysion next. "And what of yourself. . . ? Perhaps your life is more adventurous and glamorious than my own?" Part of Aria hoped so. Her life, in retrospect, was exceedingly dull. So she found beauty and art in the world around her, listened to the orchestra of nature every day. . . That still didn't mean her life was anything glorious. She was but one wolf, who walked with her shadow as company - every step was an adventure, but not every trail was a hero's journey.

She lived the life of a peasant - perhaps this Elysion was that of a prince?

((Boy I'm glad her thoughts and expressions and metaphors can't be heard. x3 No wonder she's on her lonesome - she must have terrified her other friend with her lyrics! ))

It seemed, then, that Aria had been travelling a lot longer than he himself had. How would it feel like, he wondered, to travel so long by yourself? Ely had always assumed he'd drift into another pack but after a few months travelling he had not yet managed to find himself one. Would he find himself still alone after two years? That thought would probably have somewhat terrified him before he left home but the pace of life when you only had yourself to worry about had become almost soothing to him. Perhaps he even enjoyed it a little...

He smiled a little at her short tale, knowing what it was like to be young and idealistic. It wasn't until he had started travelling again that he had refound that optimism but perhaps it would wane like it seemed to have from Aria's companion. Still - it seemed she hadn't given up travelling despite that so perhaps she kept a spark of enthusiasm in the venture.

"I can't say I've had much more excitement than yourself" he huffed, wishing he did have some long and interesting tale to tell. "I left my old packlands a little while ago and I've been drifting since." It was a pretty brief, but true, summation. He'd not found any great adventure or even been in peril at any time. Instead it felt like he had floated through the forest as a ghost - undisturbed and in turn disturbing little of what lived there.

"In fact I'd say the most interesting thing I've done would be meeting you." he grinned a little, thinking of how she had tumbled into his quiet world.

Aria listened to the spotted male, green eyes alive with delight and interest. She truly did want to know his tale of the forest! Listening to Elysion, the lavender female gave a low chuckle as he finished, tail wagging a bit faster behind her.

Reaching out with a friendly paw, Aria had trouble imagining a life where she was the most interesting adventure a wolf had discovered! The lavender femme didn't see herself as too terribly exciting, just a bit odd, with florescent coloured views of the world. Flattered, even if it wasn't exactly a compliment, the lavender wolfess slipped to her feet.

Since dinner wasn't an option for the she-wolf, a spot of company looked to be her next best bet. A sly smile crossed her features as she trotted past Elysion, and the girl paused to look over her shoulder. He was a wanderer, a loner, like herself. Perhaps he had nothing to do this afternoon. "Seeing as we both have a spot of gray in our lives, you wouldn't possibly have any interest to . . .liven things up a bit, would you? Add a little colour, a little music to the afternoon. . . ?"

Already her afternoon had brightened, highlighted by black fur and aqua and blue spots. She was new to the area, but not completely oblivious to the layout of the land. Perhaps he'd be interested, perhaps not, but Aria wasn't shy. The wolfess had an afternoon to spare and a spot of company would be most delightful!

Well this really was beginning to get rather interesting. How could he imagine turning down such an invitation? Afterall despite being on his own he did rather prefer not to be if the occassion arose and, well, she did seem pleasant company.

As she walked by him he shuffled to his feet and turned to her, nodding briefly. "Sounds good." He wondered what she had in mind with that mischevious look in her eye. She certainly seemed a lively one and he figured the afternoon might be an interesting one with her around. Despite her soft violet colouring she seemed a bright spark amongst the deep greens and brown tones of the landscape and even in his afternoon. The male was a wolf who liked interesting things and she was certainly that. An afternoon spent in her company might be just the thing to perk him up before he had to trudge on further in these new lands.

"What do you suggest?" he asked with a rough smile of his own, his mis-match toned eyes gaining a little spark which had perhaps been missing before.

Aria was thrilled that he agreed, and it showed. Tail wagging faster behind her, the lavender femme gave a little hop from paw to paw. "Fantastic!" She yipped, eyes burning bright with a new found energy.

Oh, where on earth could she take him? The forest and land was alive with places to roam, area's she'd bumped into but hadn't taken time to explore. There were grassy knolls and hillsides, caves and mountains, the swift river, rapids and waterfall. Where could she take him to brighten their afternoon? Where could they roam?

Shaking out her coat, the female trotting once around Elysion before pawing playfully at the ground. "I must admit," she began, eyes twinkling, "I passed this place but once before at night. I was in persuit of dinner and didn't stop, so I apologize now if I get us lost. I'm fairly confident I can get us to where we need to go. . .but. . . just in case. . ." Oh, Aria hoped she wouldn't get them lost.

"From what little of it I saw, it should be magnificent on such a sunny afternoon." Leading the way on soft paws, Aria began their afternoon romp at an easy-paced lope. She was in no rush, and with any luck her spotted companion wouldn't be either! Glancing over her shoulder, but not stopping, she made sure he was ready to follow.

Perhaps he wouldn't find it as appealing as herself, but the lavender wolfess was willing to share. That is, she reminded herself, if she could find it. If her nose and memory didn't serve her well, the pair were in for a long afternoon. Aria couldn't understand a wolf not enjoying the beauty of the land around them, so even if she couldn't pinpoint the exact place she wanted to go, perhaps it wouldn't be an entire waste.

Hopefully.

Elysion was still but a stranger. . . . and that meant there was no telling how he would respond!

The speckled male gave a short affirmative nod and began to follow after the lavender female. He did, indeed, enjoy exploring the land but was usually, when on his own, prone to exploring it at night. Something about the starts captivated him and he'd often wander far and wide to get a good view of them. He'd trekked up one of these very hills only last night to howl at the moon in a primal manner which always sent shivers through his bones.

Perhaps it'd even be nearby to that place that'd she'd lead him? Either way he was happy to trot beside her and doscover this landscape in the day - a time in which it often looked very different. Despite his current lonely state Elysion had always been keen to find out how other olves viewed things. It was almost as interesting as finding a new thing in itself. Looking at the world from the point of view of another often created interesting new avenues to explore which he might not have thought of himself.

"Well at least it's a pleasant afternoon for it even if we do get a little lost." he said as they walked. Sometimes getting lost was the best way to discover new places so he wasn't really bothered either way. Still if she had a placed she liked neough to show him he was interested in seeing it.
