He was in a good mood, all things considered. He could hear drums in the distance. The last time he had heard drums like that was when he was younger... A few days later it had rained. He had, from then on, associated such 'music' with the crash of thunder and the roll of water pouring down from the heavens over the plains.

Would it rain tonight? He found himself almost hoping it would as he wandered towards the grasslands, rearing up to 'battle' the sky for a moment before landing hard. He took off across the grass, sleek muscles rippling beneath taught, green hide. He, like his father before him, loved to race; the freedom of it all sweeping him away from everything else. This was the life.

Kindle didn't care too much for stormy weather, and she silently cursed the nearby natives for asking for the dreary weather to appear. Her father had spoken of the indians and their chants and prayers to the spirits, but she prayed to the spirits that they'd continue on with the warm, dry season the land was undergoing as of late.

She began to walk away from her spying point, a peak on the land that allowed her to watch the natives' area more closely, and shook her head. Silly two-leggers... why couldn't they just let nature take its course?

She scuffed one hoof against the dry ground beneath her, and took silent delight in the little sparks her hoof let off. Dry and hot was the perfect condition for fire, not mucky wettness.

When he had been younger and afraid of his first storm his father had explained to him why the rain was needed. If it didn't rain then the plants wouldn't grow and the streams and rivers wouldn't run as fresh if they did. If that didn't happen then what would they eat? What would they drink?

Nothing. Yup, nothing... And he liked the fresh, spring grass too much to deny the ground of anything like rain just because it got his coat wet. Besides, with how dry everything had been, a good rain would be nice for getting his coat clean without the help of the two-leggers. He wasn't going anywhere near that camp until after his sister was done being crazy. Nope. Not one hoof closer.

He came to a slow halt once he thought he was far enough away from the forest that he'd have a good race back to cover once the rain started... If it even started tonight. The sky was still clear but there was a nice breeze rolling in. Maybe, just maybe, he'd luck out tonight. He nickered to himself, tossing his head back before looking around to see exactly where he was... And that was when he saw her. Brows lofting he nickered a bit louder, trying to draw attention to himself so he didn't startle the mare.

She contemplated going home, or continue her wandering around the area. Kindle knew to keep clear of the rain, for it stung as it beat against her fiery hooves, but at the same time, she knew she'd only be driving herself crazy should she return to the cave full of lecturing mothers, crazy fathers, and two sisters that were a handful to deal with. The partial Nightmare loved her family dearly, but it didn't mean she had to like them. Sometimes they were just a bit too much for her, and today seemed like one of those days. She would risk the potential storm and continue as she was.

Her ears twitched as she heard the nicker of another horse nearby. She hadn't been paying too close attention to her surroundings so she wasn't surprised to find she was in sight of company, and her dark head turned to see who it was.

Almost to the color of the grass under her hooves, stood a stallion, with white and orange hair. She had never seen the likes of him before, and curiousity got the better of her, like it always did. Trotting forward to introduce herself to the stranger, she let out a friendly whinny in response to his nickering, as she tossed her long hair back over her shoulder.

He knew all about the family thing. It was the need to avoid family that carried him as far away from his 'home' as he'd continued to wander. If he was going anywhere he was traveling far and making sure he had stories to return home with.

He couldn't keep himself from grinning as the mare trotted towards him. This just kept getting easier... The whole 'being outgoing' thing, not getting mares to come to him. Either way, the latter was kinda nice too even if mares (beyond mothers) were kooky.

He let his head dip down, bowing to the mare as he'd been taught to do. Politeness first in the presence of a lady. "Evenin'." He tossed his head back, fiery mane fluttering down into place against his neck. "Didn't know there was anyone else out here t'night."

She paused in her trot as she noticed the green stallion giving her a polite bow as he greeted her, and her own head tilted in curiousity at his speech. He spoke differently, as if he came from a different region than she did, and it sounded funny to her ears. Not bad funny... just.. interesting funny.

Giving him a fast nod in return, to quickly bypass all the polite formalities she knew it'd be best to follow, she quickly brought her head up and agreed with him. "I didn't see you standin' over there... I hope you hadn't been there long. Then again, I guess it wouldn't be rude of me to not say hello to ya---you if I didn't see you, right?"

She bit her tongue, slightly irked that she still had trouble speaking more like the adult she had grown into being. Her lazy speech from being a foal seemed to stick with her like flies to a cow... she just couldn't get rid of it. Old habits die hard, and she made a mental note to try to think before she spoke anymore foalish talk in front of this stranger.

He couldn't help but laugh at how fast she was talking. Leave it to him to find another spirited mare... Not that he minded. No, they definately made things interesting and he liked interesting. It was so much better than dull, borring stick-in-the-mud... Like his brother.

"Woah, woah. Slow down there. If y'keep talkin' that fast I'm gonna miss everythin' y'say and spend th'next ten minutes tryin' t'make sense of it." He was grinning, eyes dancing with merriment. "Name's Wylie... An' no. I wasn't standin' there longer than a minute and I'd just noticed you right before yo noticed me."

She tried to decipher and recall his dialect's origin, but to no avail. Kindle hadn't gone much further out from where she lived, so she had yet to meet any of the fascinating creatures her mother and father had spoken of when she was a foal.

"Well, if you'd listen faster, I wouldn't have to slow down with my talkin'!" she snorted back, teasing. Her fiery orange eyes searched over the stallion, as her mind finished absorbing and translating his blurred speech.

"Nice ta meet ya, Wylie." she grinned, liking how that name rolled off her tongue. "I'm Kindle... like the fire."

Its orign was a midnight blue stallion with fiery hair much like his own and a spring green mare who, somehow, managed to put up with his father. It was more of a 'from someone' than 'from somewhere'. He prided himself in the fact that he was at least understandable when he spoke.

"My ears can only listen so fast, Firefly." He nickered, trying out the whole 'nickname' thing that Mardi had mentioned. He would like to think that he was getting better at it... And, if he wasn't, well... At least he remembered the mare's name.

"Pleasure's mine, Kindle. What brings you out and about t'night?"
PostPosted: Fri Apr 27, 2007 9:21 pm

"Well then," she remarked, her tail flicking from one side to the other, "My mouth can only go so slow, so it seems we might have a bit of a problem here, Wylie."

She paused, giving him a blank stare at the name he had called her. She wasn't used to being called by anything other than her name... did he have a bad memory? Kindle could recall her father saying that he was losing some of his mind as he grew older, but this stallion didn't look old in the least. Scrunching up her nose, she eyed him again, from ear to hoof. Why... this stallion didn't look very much older than herself!

Ignoring the name, she glanced at the horizon, and at the stars beginning to dance their way up high into the sky. It wouldn't be long before the starlight, along with the moon, would provide the only light for her to see by, save for the fire that was forever surrounding her at her feet.

"I'm out... because I wanted to be out." she said slowly, trying to think of a better reason. She had no real purpose to be walking about... if anything, she should be home right now, avoiding any possible storm, but instead remained where she stood, talking to a total stranger. Her father wouldn't be happy to hear about her meeting a strange stallion, but then again, he wasn't very happy with anything Kindle did, for the most part. "What are you doin' out here, Wylie? Do you live nearby?"

Alright... She was giving him strange looks. Maybe Mardi had been right. Maybe he really was terrible with the whole 'nickname' thing. He'd just move on quickly and attempt to forget that it had ever happened because he was smooth like that. Smooth.

"I guess that's as good a reason as any." He nickered softly, giving his head another light toss before glancing up at the sky for a moment. He could see a few clouds now but none of them looked threatening and, for the most part, there was just the big, beautiful sky.

"I'm out here 'cause I'd rather not be in there." He tilted his head back towards the forest for a moment before flashing a smile at the mare. "That's where I live... Along with my Mama, Fatha an' my siblin's. I don't feel like spendin' time with family t'night. Seemed like a good night t'get away from it all."

"That it does... that it does."

She cast a glance in the direction that her cave lay... it was a good distance away from the forest, more closer towards the river. "I have parents and a couple of sisters who I'm not ready to go back to myself," she chuckled, looking towards his gaze's direction. "I like being out on my own... it feels more free that way."

Kindle knew she didn't make any sense... what did she know. The longest she'd been apart from her family had been nearly a full day and evening, and even then regretted being gone for so long, much thanks to the lecture that had been waiting at home for her from her mother. She longed, in her heart, to be independant, to be out on her own, but she knew she had much still to learn before she could take part in that grand adventure. She needed to get her some of that 'maturity' her mother always talked about to her and her sisters. It was always about tryin' ta be mature, never about having some good 'ol fashion fun, which was what she craved for.

"There's alot to get away from, isn't there?" she asked quietly, not even realizing she was asking the question aloud. Responsibility... who needed it?

"For me... It's more that I like knowin' that if I'm by m'self I don't have t'worry 'bout what anyone's thinkin'. I can be who I am an' not who they want me t'be. I don't go 'bout judgin' m'self as much as they judge me." His parents would never judge him. At least, not for him to hear. His father knew how much like him he was and his mother... Well, she was just glad that he hadn't somehow gotten himself killed as a foal.

His brother? Well... That was another story and one he didn't like to talk about.

"Yeah... There is." He sighed, the huff created by his breath blowing his mane up away from the side of his face. "I guess that's just part of growin' up... Y'start findin' more things t'hide from."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2007 5:54 pm

She turned to him, looking a bit offended. "Scared? I don't know about you, Wylie, but I'm not scared of nothin', and got no reason to hide. They just bug me, that's what they do. No sense of hidin' from anything, not when it can find you. It's best ta outrun it... because then, it'd be harder for it ta catch ya. I can't out-hide anything, but I can sure try ta outrun it."

She snorted, and tossed her long mane aside once again. Even if she was still young by age, her body had grown up, so didn't that make her grown-up, in a way? Who was her father and mother, to keep telling her what to do all the time... when would she start making decisions for herself?

He snorted, stomping one of his own hooves out the ground. "Did I say anythin' 'bout bein' scared? I'm not afraid of anythin' m'self. B'sides... Runnin' ain't much different than hidin' 'cept for the movement involved in it."

That said he seemed to get a brilliant idea. A grin slipped into place upon his face as he turned to the mare. "Bet'cha I could outrace you. Bet'cha anythin'... 'Cause, I figure, if I can outrace a storm then I've gotta be able to outrace a mare." He was teasing now; being a brat like all good brothers were. Of course, if she didn't have a brother then she wouldn't know that... But friends could tease friends as well, right?

"What d'you say, Kindle? Feel like racin'?"
