Well, it'll be about six years before I move out, but when I do, I'll be looking for a dog. =D

So, I think now would be the time to start thinking about what breed, and all of that. We've always had GSDs and one Sheltie, and I love both breeds. But, I was reading about the Brittany, and they look like wonderful dogs. I was curious about the differences in temperament and… attitude, I guess would be the best word, between Brittanys and GSDs. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them, any information, any of the downsides of the breed. =] Or suggestions of other breeds to look into. (I have quite a list, but I was hoping for some fresh ideas. Keep in mind that this will be quite a ways into the future, so it will be a well thought out decision regardless.)

I'm probably going to be interested in having an intelligent, athletic dog of medium to large size (read: not toy) that is interested enough in pleasing people for me to easily (relatively) do obedience or agility with.

I also thought this might be a good thread to maybe discuss different breeds and how to decide if they're the right one for you.

I haven't had much experience with Brittanys, but the few I've met had personalities more like Aussie Shepherds than GSDs. They tended to be boisterous, happy, and independent- Which is great, but none I met had that willing to please attitude.

Your description sounds like an Australian Cattle Dog to me. Maybe I'm just biased because I love the breed, but they're, well, great dogs. Medium size, extremely loyal, and very intelligent- They also have that, "Whatever you want me to do is what I want to do" attitude. They're very active and require a lot of exercise, but if you're planning on obedience or agility that would more than occupy one.

It's funny, I've always thought that ACDs were like, the most beautiful dogs ever but I've never really considered them, for some reason. =] That is something to think about. I've never spent any amount of time with one before. I've only met a couple Brittanys either, and it was always just in passing, so I've never really gotten to know one.

The Aussies I've known were way too... bouncy and "I can't heaaaaar you while I chase the other dogs lalala" for me, but that was probably just those dogs, because I know they're supposed to be super smart and all. =P

That's a pretty apt description of Aussies, actually. xD Some working lines are a lot better, but they've mostly just become pets, and their temperaments are being bred for more Lab and Goldenish traits.

*laughs* Ah, that explains a lot. And I'm not really into labs, either. =P
