*I originally posted this in one of the forums under a different title*

Call me sheltered or prude or whatever you want. I may be young, but like the title says, I think clothing (especially for females) is too sexual now. You know it's bad when kids can buy thongs now. xp

I don't care what others think, I personally don't like or want to show my body to the world. In most cases it's inappropriate and uncalled for.

[RANT]

I hate today's fashion. stare

I'm sorry, but most of it is just ugly.

What people call 'sexy' to me is not sexy. It's slutty and trashy to me. Or not made for comfort.

**The follwing are just examples, but I could go on and on and on.

See-through shirts (even when put with something else): NOT sexy! (don't worry, the nips have been edited out)

Bras visible through the shirt and thongs: NOT sexy! There's a reason they're called 'under garments'. They go under your clothes, and the world shouldn't see them.

**Yes, I've seen one piece swimsuits like that in stores. It's not an exaggeration. Also, girls, why do you buy swimsuits, but never go swimming in them? confused

Oh, and I'm not picking on just females. Look 2 examples, among many more I could post):

Before you say, "But, that's just one style.". I've seen these examples (not including the swim wear) in every style: goth, punk, prep, hip hop, and all that other stuff. It's everywhere.

I'm not saying walk around in big tents. But for the sake of society, put on some descent clothes! The world does not need to see your body! Keep that crap to yourself! No one cares about your breast size, butt size, p***s size, or any of that crap, except you!

Why has it suddenly become the norm to look naked or half naked or like you are about to or just had sex all the time?! Why is it that most clothing now (especially for females) is focused on showing skin?! gonk

Mom complains about how I dress, but you know what? I'd rather be covered up and wear stuff that's too big than draw attention to myself for the wrong reasons. My clothing may be out of style (according to Mom), but at least I'm comfortable and covered up.

The rare times I go out looking for new clothes, it's a big hassle, because people seem to think that every girl wants to look like a slut, now. Heck, I actually would wear more fitted clothing, if it weren't for the fact that most of it now is too thin, or too tight, or too low, or too high, or just plain ugly.

It used to be that getting a makeover meant changing your look and you'd actually look nice. Now everytime someone gets a makeover, it's 'make up, skin, and heels'. Yeah, like I want to walk around on stilts every hour of every day. stare That's another thing: heels. Why the heck are heels high and skinny now all of a sudden? Yeah, that's exactly the perfect completion to an outfit. Make girls walk around on their tip toes, with a higher chance of falling! Nevermind that they throw your body off balance. Anything for the sake of fashion! xp

Sneakers. With heels. Uh. stare

Even sandals and boots are trying to copy now! gonk Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense, wearing heeled boots in the middle of winter, with snow and ice on the ground! "Hey ladies! Forget about risking your necks! Look sexy in the winter as you walk on the ice! biggrin " Okay, WHAT?! gonk

I could go on, but I'll stop here. The bottom line is, I don't understand today's fashion. Especially fashion for females. It's not designed to be as comfortable, functional, or practical. Can someone PLEASE put the common sense back into normal, daily clothing?! PLEASE?!! gonk

**Before someone says, "Well, why don't you do something?" I already design clothes. xd But that's not the issue. The issue is how crazy clothing has become.

***OH, AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON MAKE UP!!! stressed

I agree with some of what you said, but I disagree with the premise. I think we need to learn to be less self-conscious of our bodies. We shouldn't hide under our clothes for some moral reasons. The reasons should be practical, e.g. to keep us warm when it's cold, to keep us from getting sunburns when we're out enjoying the warm weather.

I'm not saying that we should be wearing ugly clothes, but simply that form follows function. That is, it must be practical before deciding on the aesthetics, but that doesn't preclude the clothes from looking nice.

Where I agree with you is that the fashion today is awful. You're right in saying that clothes are more slutty looking that sexy. I don't have a problem with revealing skin/clevage, when well executed, but many of these are poorly executed.

I may be wrong, but from the way you wrote this it sounds like you think all of this fashion is new. It's all old stuff coming back. I think we've plateaued in the fashion world because there hasn't been any significantly new fashion trends for a long while.

Yeah, it's coming back, but the original form was slightly different. Where tops used to be mainly low cut, now they're also a bit see through.

I just wish that on the rare times I looked at clothes, I could find something I'd like ot wear that isn't about 'flaunting what I have'. sweatdrop

I recently was shopping with my mom and aunt and cousins and found some nice shirts I liked. They were the right size and everything. biggrin But when I tried them on, it turns out they were made out of a material that was too thin, and then then shirts cinched in at the waist, and I hate my clothes to be so fitted they touch my skin. It was disappointing. sad

I have mixed feelings about this thread.

I think low cut tops *********IN MODERATION********* can be a sexy look. But the tight thing is sooooo obnoxious. We are an obese society in the US-- so why should we tighten our clothing deliberately? It think the flouncy skirts look dumb with the ruffles-- honestly, why would a grown woman want to look like she stole her 8 year old daughter's skirt and tried to stretch it over her butt?

I think a lot of styles these days just look stupid. Like giant furry boots-- with pink pajama bottoms and a poof of hair on the top of your head that looks like you were too lazy to bother with your pony tail. I saw a lot of that my last year of undergrad--- It looked like people wanted to pillage a village in their pajamas--- like retarded cheerleader Vikings.

I also don't get grills...

My overall opinion is that a little skin in moderation can be sexy- because it's a hint of something leaving something to the imagination biggrin I mean if you're already pretty much naked-- why would a man want to undress you, there's nothing left!

But I have to agree with Abarrach, this is mainly an issue of function versus form. I'm a function gal myself, blue jeans, tennis shoes. I wear comfortable underwear because nobody needs to see my panties but me and the last thing I need is that butt flossed sensation in class or at work, I can't stop my job to say "excuse me while I pull the piece of string that is my panties out of my butt crack..." (BTW-- Thongs for Kids??? NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WRONG!!!!!!!)

Function, I say it again, function. Some silly undergrad was running around campus this winter in a short skirt, I just wanted to shake her and yell, "What the heck are you thinking!"

Oh, and p.s. I kind of get weirded out when they have "sexy" (though I don't think so) clothes for the avatars.

Some of them are cute....

but the lil swim suit tops are really creepy, and people's kids have these as their avatars! (Also bizarre to me is when pre-teen boys drool over an avatar or make a pass at someone cause their ava is "Sexy" rolleyes rolleyes )

I understand where you are comeing from on this, and I like you think that most of it is just beyond what should be exceptable as everyday clothing. Everyonce in a while I can better understand...kinda.

Me personally I am the queen of layers. Long sleeved shirts under a short sleeved one. Yes even during the summer I wear that sort of thing. I get cold easily. I don't wear shorts no matter what the temp is outside. I personally own one pair and it's my bumming around the house I don't give a crap what the hell I wear shorts.

i see the point here. clothes these days are waaaay too revealing. even with young kids nowadays. i'm the "overprotective" father of a 4 year old girl. and some of the clothes i see for her make me absolutely sick to my stomach. tube tops??? mini skirts??? low rise jeans??? midriff bearing tops??? and this is for a 4 year old!!! what parent in their right mind would buy such trash for their children? teens aren't much better. i'm absolutely sick of walking through the mall, having to see teens (ages from 13 to 17, and even older than that) walking around, wearing tight fitting jeans with their thongs hanging out and shirts that barely cover their chests.this type of attire just screams bait to a sexual predator.

on to my next point. most men find it sexier if they have to imagine what a woman looks like naked. now i'm not saying they should all be wearing extremely loose, non-flattering clothing. a little skin is nice... but there's a very thick line between tasteful and trashy, and our society's fashion has completely ignored that line. sex sells, they say. flaunt it if you got it, they say. beauty magazines have this type of message posted all over them. and the models! girls nowadays think that beauty is the anorexic crack whore look with skimpy clothes. and i can just imagine what will be coming out in years to come. the clothes will keep getting smaller and smaller. it's completely pathetic.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:22 pm

I would totally wear all of those shoes except for the boring black ones... stare ;

heh heh.

But I'm a bit of a goof. I don't care so much about sex0ry clothing so much as people looking like slobs in general. I live ina college town and the number of students I see going to class in their PJs is just appaling. Until the late 60s, there was a dress code on campus, and people had to wear nice clothes. I wish there still was one. rolleyes

I have a lot of blouses like that brown "low cut" (?) one. I have no chest so it's hardly sexy, but it's comfy and I use moustache tape so it doesn't gap.

Mind you, I mostly wear vintage and vintage styled dresses from the 40s, 50s and 60s.. and some of that 60s stuff was SHORT. It's not like it's anything new. Trust me on that one. =3 Just look at the flappers.

I agree, I hate seeing kids dressed like prostitots. And I think in general people dress way too casually and grossly. And I hate underwear showing. OH, and I hate any pants with something written across the butt!!!

But I do like cute things. =3 I'd be miserable if T-shirts were huge like they were in the 80s (I like that babydoll cut).. and I hate to wear pants that touch my navel, it drives me insane, I gotta have hiphuggers. I hate slouchy jeans, I like the snug ones. Oh I have short shorts too. And high-heel boots ;__; *hangs head in shame* But I'm not a bad person! ;__; I'm a good girl. Honest! I am not the sex0ring type!

Oh well.

Also in defense of that girl in the black T-shirt who you can see her bra.. lots of times certain weaves of fabric... well, her underwear was probably invisible until the flash went off. I've worked in the theatre forever and I've noted this when light hits a certain way on certain fabrics, it can become translucent. It was probably an accident and I bet she's embarassed. It's happened in a couple of well-known celeb. occassions.

And .. well, I live in a college town like I said before and people do tend to dress on the slutty side (but are mostly on the slobby side).. but a lot of the stuff you posted (like the fishnet top and some of the swimsuits) would never be seen even in my liberal town.

But I've got no problem with wacky clothing as you can see from my website at nessachan.com (shameless plug.)

BUT: The reason clothing looks this way is because it sells. I'm a seamstress, and I won't buy a lot of stuff because the seams aren't finished or the hems are rough. And if you think fashion is painful now, try corseting yourself down to a 14" waist! =3 If it didn't sell, people wouldn't sell it. So the best advice is, don't buy it if you don't like it... I guess. o_o

AMEN, the butt writing annoys me. It never seems flattering, which defeats the purpose of drawing attention to the butt.

Loved the Link Nessa, go you! Very neat ^_^ Sewing is a lot of hard work, it takes dedication to do it (many of my friends in undergrad were fashion design majors in a program that insisted they took tons of sewing classes)

"...like retarded cheerleader Vikings."

I think it's important to enjoy the wondrous variety of clothing you see, if only so people can look around at all the orange coasties with their tiny outfits and giant sunglasses in the middles of winter, and then see that your sanity is still in tact.

But a**-writing has to go. I don't need a jiggly "ABERCROMBIE" impeding my way across campus.

Other than that, just recognize that everybody needs to dress themselves, but not everybody had a design sensibility. They have to follow fashion because they don't have the cognitive resources to create a beautiful look on their own. ...and MANY times they try to follow fashion and get a little lost along the way, but give them credit for trying.

...oh, and if we're talking pure utilitarian functionalism, everyone would be very covered up with loose clothing, winter and summer. It's when we add the function of sexuality and sexual attraction that we want to show our bodies and thereby our potential for sex and reproduction. ...and then those of us who don't have much potential follow suit because that's what Glamour Magazine wants.

AND IN THIS POINT, I agree with the topic. Clothing has become less about the function of shielding oneself from the elements and more about displaying our sex-organs while maintaining the guise of Christian modesty--we wear clothes, but as little as possible.

...which reminds of a game, Omikron. It is set in the future or something... but people basically wear band-aids over their naughty bits.

-----
So yeah, what is clothing's purpose?
Shielding oneself from the elements?
Displaying personal style?
Comfort?
Displaying sexual potential?

Something else? A combination? Is one better than another? Should they all be balanced evenly/unevenly?

I dress for a few purposes. Above all else, I dress for the elements. By this I mean that I wear heavy clothes in winter that keep me warm outside but come off inside, and lighter clothes in summer that don't make much sense out in the sun (I should have robes and a hat if I'm dressing for the sun), but they do make sense once I'm inside a stuffy classroom and I need air-on-sweat to cool off.

Second, I dress for my personal style or for my own comfort. If I'm just having sort of a blah day, I throw on jeans and a t-shirt. I'm comfortable and it's easy to "maintain." If I'm feeling more expressive that day, I amp up the personal style with a wing-collar shirt, a bright green T-shirt, a bright pink tie, and maybe some black shorts. ...with pink silk-knot cufflinks, of course. The thing is, I look ridiculous and the rest of the day I'm tugging on my t-shirt and tie, but I have a hell of a lot of fun doing it!

LAST, I dress for sexual attraction. As you may have guessed from the outfit I just described, I'm not out to impress people with how good I look. I'm out to have fun and I look good doing it (despite what you might be picturing at the moment!).

PS-- I rough idea of my ker-azy outfits:

Ok, I found this thread very intersting. I agree alot with most of what everyone has written before me. Alot of women's clothing is all suggestive in some way!!! Butt writing is one example. I heard many time as a joke that only in America girls wear flops in winter with a heavy coat and mittens. It's the truth at least for my area!!! I've heard many times a mother or some female with a boy wearing his pants so far down his butt saying, "Pull your pants up!!!" I don't blame older poeple for feeling the way they do about pants wore that way. There are good ways to show off your body without showing everything you got.

As for tight clothing and baggie clothing. I don't like wearing anything so tight that it looks like if I take a deep breath it'll split at the seams. I've seen people wear really baggie clothes that if the clothes were any larger they could put tent poles inside them and camp out inside their clothes so to speak.

Everyone wears their clothes the way they do for their reasons. To look cool, sexy, sluthy, show off something, or draw eyes to part of their body. I wear what's comfortable, fitting, and still feel like a girl. Even with what clothing I wear in spring, summer, fall and winter keeps me cool or warm for the season. Everyone is different and these's no getting around that! In fall I wear a sweater, jeans, and sneakers for example where as the next girl is still wearing a tank top, shorts with flops. Both of us are comfortable, but I don't like to be cold. As for shoes I wear nothing higher then one inch or flats and sneakers for normal dress. That's me. I'd say more, but enough said for the moment. 3nodding

Heh heh.. My mother always taught me that flip-flops were only for the beach, the swimming pool, doing work in the garden, or using the shower at camp! I can't understand why someone would want to walk around in those all day. I always joke that I should have become a podiatrist (foot doctor), because I think they'll get a LOT of buisness in the coming years from all these flip-flop wearers.. xD

Okay!
I do agree with some of it. There is a complete difference between "sexy" and "trashy." Some of the clothing shown above is just trashy. Bras showing through sheer shirts and clothes way too tight is not sexy at all.

On the other hand, I think women have the right to feel sexy. If the heels are what they like to wear there is nothing wrong with it. I thought a couple pairs of those shoes were cute. Low cut tops can be sexy as well as long as they're worn correctly.

So basically, I agree with most of the other people who have posted on this form.

I have fun dressing up and going out with my friends or boyfriend. I wear low-cut dresses and a classy pair of heels. When I'm going to school i wear sneakers, pants and a shirt. I mean, its what I feel like wearing. As long as I don't look trashy, I see nothing wrong with it.
PostPosted: Fri May 11, 2007 12:32 pm

In general I think people are capable of feeling sexy and confident, and looking thus, if they dress themselves with a little class. Sexy is a good thing, oversexed is gross. It isn't as simple as covering up -- some people can really work the right exposure -- but people should just work on not looking TRASHY.

Those nasty low-low-low-rise jeans that give us a good look at the 16-year-old beer gut? And of course that same girl has a tramp-stamp tattoo on her lower back, some abstract tribal thing, with her thong showing and a little trashy dangly belly ring in front. Or! Better yet! They have low-slung pink velour sweatpants that say "SEXY" on the a**. Yup, that's exactly what I wanna see when I'm picking out bell peppers at the grocery store. Ugh. It's just TRASHY looking.

And yes, the guys. Oh my god, can they look LESS bathed these days? Geezus. It's like that line in Clueless:

"So okay, I don't want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don't get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we're expected to swoon? I don't think so."

Granted, that's a little dated, but it's not that different, and it's the same sentiment.

EDIT: Haha, looks like I basically recapped everything people have been saying. At least I know I'm part of the consensus.

oh wow... wall of text stressed

I have to agree with you on a lot of those things. But for a few years I couldn't find clothes cut longer, and I can't stand waist high jeans. So I try to find longer shirts and that usually looks ok.

BUT MAN those heels... does everything have to be an ankle breaking knee jarring 4-6 inches! what happened to cute 2 inch heels? I don't want to tip toe around for gos sake
