Some questions, mark my words, are more marked than others. A marked question, a phrase which here means 'a rather crude play on the phrase question mark' is a question that has, at least to the asker of the question, quite a bit of significance. However, in the way that a flea is only significant to whoever the flea is biting, a marked question that bites at a person is normally only significant to the person the question happens to be gnawing away at, much like a rat in a jester's cap who plays too many video games and stays up late writing short stories. Markedly, the rat in question has marked a question about a question mark, and has chosen to question this question mark in a questioning manner in the topic that, assuming you have not gone off to feed the birds or start a fire, you are reading right now.
The question is this: does the 'question mark' or Great Unknown from the later books in ASoUE necessarily have to be a submarine or a ship of some kind? Aside from my passionate interest in literature, I am also an aficionado (a phrase which here means 'ardent devotee') in the field of cryptozoology. Could the Great Unknown, rather than a mundane aquatic vehicle, be some large and malevolent sea beast? Upon reading a description of it for the first time, this rat was struck by the notion it could be a serpent of prodigious size. It was my understanding upon reading the Grim Grotto that it moved and curved, not into the shape of a question mark, but continuously, in the manner of a snake or eel.
To put it briefly: when the Quagmires were swallowed up by the Great Unknown, could they not have been literally swallowed up? I suppose I don't want to think that it was a submarine, and would rather have the strange entity be some gigantic ocean-dwelling monster. The ocean, after all, contains more secrets than any other place in the world, even most libraries...

Hrmmm....that's an interesting theory. It could also be a submarine that looks like a sea serpent. ^^;

I like the first paragraph of the thread, well written. whee

In answer to your question, I don't think it has to be a submarine. One of the beauties of the end of the series is Snicket leaves it for the reader to decide.. I'd like to think it's a giant krakken of some sort, makes it more interesting.

Now I have an amusing image of Snicket plopping this HUGE tentacle down on Mr. Helquist's desk and saying "Look what I have for you to draw! It's like this but 20 times bigger!" mrgreen

Lol. sweatdrop

Thanks much! I'm a writer by trade, and in fact when I go to college next year creative writing will be my major. So I had fun. ^_^ And yeah, all I really wanted to do was throw the sea monster idea out there...looks like I have. mrgreen
