Note: The darker, thicker parts of the walls are windows. ^^;

A. The exterior of the house looks plain, with the exception of a single plastic flamingo, which someone (Progolo has yet to find out who...) has stuck firmly into the front yard. A couple of steps lead up to the porch, which stretches almost the full length of the front of the house. To the left of the door is a wooden dining chair, and to the left is a small potted birch. The door itself bears the number '3.'

B. Immediately in sight is the comfortable living area. A couch, coffee table, and chair face the fireplace in the eastern wall. Nearby is a bookshelf and the ladder to the upper level.

C. The north-western corner of the lower floor has been walled off to provide a private relief area with a large litter box for the many creatures that inhabit the house hold. The single window has been left without blinds or curtains in order to discourage bacteria growth, and the area is therefore very sunny.

D. The eastern half of the house has been made into a kitchen and dining area. In the corner is a small refridgerator and nearby is a tall table dedicated to the preparation of food, a cupboard, and a cabinet that holds canned and dried foods. The dining table has seating for two; the two missing chairs are outside, one in the back, one in the front.

E. The final area of the lower level is the spacious bathroom, with a large claw-footed tub. Above the sink is a cupboard containing toiletries, and a corner cabinet contains fresh towels and countless rolls of toilet paper. A small glazed window above the tub offers light to the room without sacrificing privacy.

e. Double-sized bed
f. Bed-side table
g. Nesting area
h. Divider
i. Curtain
j. Twin-sized bed
k. Short dresser

A. Most of the upper level is a combination of an office and 'master beroom.' A wooden desk sits against the western wall underneath a window and in a corner is a heavy, peculiarily shaped wardrobe that holds Progolo's clothing. Against the north wall is the head of Progolo's double-sized bed, flanked by two bedside tables. Beside the bed is a pile of sheets and blankets that are molded into a distinct nest shape, which is where the creatures sleep.

B. The south-eastern corner has been turned into a second, smaller bedroom in preparation for the new Aerandir. A curtain and a screen seperate it from the rest of the upper-floor. This enclosed area is mostly undecorated, with only a twin-sized bed and a short dresser that also serves as a bed-side table.

Fla-raff? Gi-mingo?

Name:
Kalarune

Nicknames:
Kala, Kal, Rune, Pinky (or 'pee,' to Yaraif *cringe*)

Stage:
Gryphon

Height:
About 2 feet...she hasn't really been stretched out all the way to be measured exactly...

Weight:
Just right for a Flamingo-Giraffe.

Physical Description:
Though she's bigger than many of her fellow gryphons, Kalarune has a sinuous, frail appearance. Her long neck and spindly legs look like they might snap if one were to blow too hard on her. Kala's vivid pink plumage makes an interesting contrast to her beige and brown body.

Personality:
Due to her young age, her personality is hard to define.

Behavior: Kalarune is a very active girl, who enjoys running frenzied laps around the house or wading in her pond outside. So far she hasn't caused too much trouble yet, but as she hasn't been around for long...

Additional Notes:
Very true to the two animals she is composed of, Kala sleeps standing up and eats upside down. She calls out in raspy squawks when agitated.

Progolo Dgagn (Keeper) A quiet, thoughtful human(?) man in twenties, Progolo has devoted his life to research for an organization known as the "Society of Summoners." He was assigned to Gryphon research, which more or less explains how he wound up on Ar'Idil... Progolo apparently isn't from gaia, (or Earth at all, it would seem) because things like measurements, country names, certain animals, and slang tend to confuse him, and he often reminisces about his experience as a guardian or warrior of some sort.
-----+ Though he cares dearly for Kala, he strictly considers her to be a subject of study, not his child. In this respect, he can be a bit stuffy with her.

Yaraif the Kun-kun Responsible for ninety-five percent of the commotion in Progolo's life, and fifty percent of the population in his household. She absolutely loves eggs, colors, and noise, and she is infamous for her sticky fingers. However, she can be quite helpful and sweet...when she feels like it.
-----+ Yaraif --amazingly!-- finds Kala fun and interesting, despite how much attention Progolo gives the Aerandir. (Yaraif's known to be quite the jealous type...) Unfortunately, these feelings aren't mutual; Kala's terrified of her.

Myrrh the Nyokii One of Progolo's subjects of study. She's very patient and loves a good cuddle.
-----+ Since she's currently about Kala's size, Myrrh makes a good play-mate for the Aerandir. The two like to play a form of tag, which has improved Myrrh's crippled motor skills dramatically.

Taal the Griff This is the griffin responsible for the other five percent of commotion that Yaraif DOESN'T cause. However, his destruction tends to be on a grander scale, thanks to his pyrokinetic abilities. He's a cowardly creature and usually only destroys things on accident, but since those accidents often involve melting priceless objects or burning houses down, Progolo has to keep a close eye on him.
-----+ Taal tries to keep out of Kala's way as much has possible. Unfortunately, Kala really enjoys the warmth of his feathers and like to snuggle up with him.

Kuntu. Ever since the day it hatched and imprinted on her, this little critter has been Yaraif's minion. It adores shiny objects and is frequently stealing valuable things for its kun-kun 'Mommy'.
-----+ Kuntu and Kala have interacted very little.

Kununo. Kuntu's partner in crime. Very obedient and even helpful to Progolo, when Yaraif tells it to be.
-----+ Kununo and Kala have interacted very little.

Kinsei the Aerandir. The newest addition to Progolo's menagerie, this little aerandir was given to Progolo as a 'sadistic' Christmas gift from none other than Took. It's a very curious little critter, and tends to cause a lot of trouble.
-----+ Mostly, Kala and Kinsei just find each other annoying.

Took. This unpleasant young Sorcerer is apparently a high-ranking official for the Society of Summoners. He's supposed to be 'helping' Progolo with his research, but with friends like Took, who needs enemies? Despite his youth, he wields quite a lot of power, particularily over Sahin.

Sahin. Took's Djinni-servant. He hates Took generously, and tries to spend as much time away from him as possible, preferring to help Progolo out at Ar'Idil than to go on Took's menial errands.

Mystaven. This is another of Progolo's charges, but this one can, fortunately, take care of himself. He delivers things for Progolo and watches the roost while his owner is out or busy.

Ol' Man Phillip. Not as much of a visitor as he is a squatter, Ol' Man Phillip is a duck-goat Aerandir that has taken up residence in Kala's pond. Mystaven called him by this name in a moment of humor, but the name has stuck. Phillip has a bit of a bad attitude; he likes to chase other birds and animals away from the water while honking intimidatingly.

A fairly simple notebook bound in black leather lies closed on Progolo's desk. Leaflets regarding Aerandir, clips of photos, and endless pages of random notes are scattered around it.

User Image

A dull pink feather is attatched to it by a string, apparently used as a bookmarker, judging by its worn and rumpled appearence.

Flamingos

Class: Aves (Birds)
Order: Phoenicopteriformes
Family: Phoenicopteridae
Genus and species:
Phoenicopterus ruber (greater flamingo and Caribbean flamingo subspecies)
Height: 3.3 to 4.6 feet (1 to 1.4 meters)
Wingspan: 3.3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.6 meters)
Weight: 3.3 to 9 pounds (1.5 to 4.1 kilograms)
Life span: 20 to 30 years; up to 50 years not unusual
Number of eggs laid: usually 1
Size of eggs: 3 to 3.5 inches (78 to 90 millimeters) long; 4 to 4.9 ounces (115 to 140 grams)
Incubation: 27 to 31 days
Size at hatching: 2.5 to 3.2 ounces (73 to 90 grams)
Age of maturity: 3 to 5 years
Additional notes: Despite the belief that flamingos belong in the sunny lagoons of tropical islands, they can actually survive quite well in cool mountain ranges and even volcanic lakes. They eat upside down, sifting mud through their beaks, which are perfectly equipped to capture things like diatoms, alage, and seeds. Their distinct colors are caused by alpha- and beta-carotene. The Carribean flamingo tends to be rich vermillion or crimson in color.

The flamingo, living on hot volcanic lakes, recalls the ancient Phoenix myth. Found in many cultures, this story describes an immortal bird who was consumed by flames, then rose from the ashes. The word "flamingo" is also associated with fire: it derives from "flamenco," from Spanish through Latin, a word that has its root in "flaming."

Giraffes

Class: Mammalia (Mammals)
Order: Artiodactyla
Family: Giraffidae
Genus: Giraffa
Species: camelopardalis
Height:
males-up to 18 feet (5.5 meters);
females-up to 14 feet (4.3 meters)
Weight:
males-up to 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms);
females-up to 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms)
Life span: 15 to 20 years
Gestation: 14 months
Number of young at birth: usually 1
Size at birth: 6 feet tall (1.8 meters), 100 to 150 pounds (45 to 68 kilograms)
Age of maturity: 3 to 5 years
Additional notes: These unique creatures were once known as 'camel-leopards' due to the belief that giraffes were the chimeras of these two animals. Of course, this led to much speculation as to the magical properties of griaffes, including flight. It was believed that a lock of giraffe hair can render a holder the power of levitation...

--Moving Out--
-----------------------------------

Progolo surveyed his office, thinking of the daunting task before him. All the packing...he'd have to decide what to take and what to leave, figure out what he was going to do with his house for the next few months, and try to explain to his contacts that he was moving to an almost unheard of Island to raise a pair of inanimate jars.

Myrrh couldn't be left alone; she was just a baby. And a sick one at that. Taal would likely melt the house in a fit of terror if he was left without Progolo for so long. Kuntu and Kununo wouldn't stay without Yaraif. He rubbed his head in frustration. He hadn't thought about Yaraif. The little Kun-kun was his constant companion, but it was likely that she wouldn't want to leave. She was too keen on her friendship with another little kun-kun. She'd be so upset to have to leave for the sake of two jars...

Progolo sighed and slumped into a chair. He wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of leaving, himself. He understood that it would be more convenient for the Aerandir, but what about him?

I musn't be selfish... Progolo thought tiredly. Considering that the Society of Summoners was paying him well for his research in the griffin field, he ought to be extremely grateful and excited for this oppurtunity to get out and about.

But it was with little enthusiasm that he regarded the map to Ar' Idil.

Today I begin preparations to move to Setone, Ar' Idil Island. I have yet to decide how I will be able to transfer my other charges; Taal, Yaraif, Myrrh, Kuntu, Kununo, and Mystaven. I fear Mysatven may be left behind, as I have not seen him recently. Taal can fly, but I do not think he could fly all the way to the island. If he is taken on the boat, he may burn it through. Yaraif has taken the ferry with me once before, but Kuntu and Kununo may not take to it as kindly as she did.

Ugh.

I will write further, but I must pack now.

Progolo dragged a large suitcase out from behind his bed and began tossing his neatly folded clothes unceremoniously inside. As he did so, he scanned his bedroom for ideas as to what else he should pack. He sighed when he saw all of Yaraifs little toys and knick-knacks. There was no way he'd be able to pack them all.

After packing his entire wardrobe, as it was a rather small one, he turned on the kun-kun's brightly colored collection of egg shells, snowglobes, crayons, music boxes, and plushies.

"Yaraif, come here for a moment, please," he called in broken kunkunese. He heard a tinkle and a buzz in the next room, where Yaraif had been painting egg shells. ((The following is translated into English for my sake and the readers' @_@ ))

"Yes?" she chirped in kunkunese, fluttering in and alighting on his shoulders. "What?"

He smiled at her sweet little voice, but then turned seriously to her collection. Taking out a notepad with kunkunese words scrawled on it, he haltingly asked her as best he could, "what do you want take?"

She looked questioningly at him. "Take...? Are we going somewhere?"

"Uh...um, yes. We have to leave for awhile. And you can only take some of your things," Progolo mumbled already seeing the horror rising in her face.

Yaraif regarded her collection frantically. At a loss, she lept from his shoulder, landing on one of her squishy rabbit plushies, and looked up at him pleadingly. "Do we have to go?"

Progolo made a sympathetic gesture. "Sorry, Yaraif. You can take..."--he examined the pile carefully--"ten things, alright? You remember how to count, don't you?"

Yaraif looked at her hands silently for a moment. In alarm, her eyes snapped back up to him. "Only ten?! Only two hands?"

"Only two hands," Progolo replied softly, sinking into his bed and begining to assemble his personal items.

Yaraif screwed up her face in frustration, her wings beating so hard they buzzed. Progolo quirked an eyebrow at her, just waiting for her to burst into a temper-tantrum.

After what must of been a huge internal struggle, she composed herself. "Alright...only two hands."

Progolo smiled, relieved. "Good, Yaraif. Thanks for not getting mad."

Yaraif grumbled, turning away.

Taal padded into Progolo's workroom, his head slung low and his ears limp. Progolo, who was seated on the floor packing his whittling tools, didn't notice him until the Griff rubbed up against his back. As always, Taal was warmer than one would have thought possible.

"Hello, Ta," Progolo said distractedly, wondering just how many of his tools he'd be able to take. Woodworking was his obsession, but he doubted there would be tools or the proper wood at his disposal on the island.

Taal sidled more fully into Progolo's line of vision, lifting his head resolutely and fluffing his wings. It was his dignified way of begging to be pet. Progolo stroked the Griff's back absently.

"I'm getting ready to move," he explained to Taal, even though he knew Taal couldn't understand him. "We're all going to Ar' Idil Island. Doesn't that sound like fun?" he added, the sarcasm obvious. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the neatly folded map, showing it to Taal, who regarded it as though wondering if he could eat it.

"Right there. Setone Village. We're going to live there for a while," Progolo rambled on. He'd read somewhere that talking to animals intelligently made them smarter and more friendly. This was worth a try; it certainly worked with children.

With one hand he continued to caress Taal's alarmingly warm back, and with the other he sifted through his many pages of notes on whittling past experiments and projects. He wouldn't need these...

Taal regarded Progolo with interest, his ears swiveling. A hoarse, weak bird call came from somewhere else in the house. Taal and Progolo glanced over their shoulders in unison.

"That's Myrrh," Progolo muttered, returning to what he was doing. "Probably lonely."

Taal, who seemed to be thinking along the same lines, trotted out of the workroom and returned shortly after, a very small, blue Nyokii dangling from his beak. He dropped Myrrh with what seemed distaste into Progolo's lap, but Progolo wasn't fooled. He could tell how much Taal adored little Myrrh.

"Hey, baby," Progolo cooed affectionately, his deep voice losing the grumpy edge it had been sporting all day. Myrrh looked fondly at him with big black eyes. He sighed. If that Gryphon-In-A-Jar was anything like her, he'd be more than happy to move to a distant island.

Myrrh nuzzled his belly, and a wave of comfort slid over him. Progolo was never really sure if she shared an empathetic bond with him, but it almost felt as if she was trying to calm him. He could practically hear someone telling him to cheer up.

You're just looking at this the wrong way. It may seem dismal now, but if you try and look at the bright side, you might find yourself warming up to the idea... he told himself, though his thoughts felt prompted somehow.

Progolo twisted himself around half way, looking into his office across the hallway. He could see the jars gleaming in the morning sunlight on his desk.

His grim frown melted into a thoughtful look. Not one of overall happiness, but it was the kindest look he'd given the jars all day.

Progolo completed the rest of his packing one handed, as he'd tucked a happily burbling Myrrh under the other. He found he was feeling quite better with her in his company, and even took care to pack the jars in a carefully padded box. Muttering animatedly to an extremely pleased Myrrh, he finished the packing speedily.

Admiring the way the boxes and suitcases had seemed to pack themselves and listenening pleasently to Myrrh's purring, he hardly heard the knock at the door. It was an insistent, annoying rap, however, and it was hard to ignore.

Curious, and a little annoyed, he drifted towards the door and peered through the peep hole. A strange, unfamiliar young man leered back at him, oddly distorted by the rounded glass.

"May I help you...?" Progolo asked when he'd opened the door. His eyebrows were drawn slightly, as he'd never seen this youth before.

"'Ey, Misteh Dgan! 'Ow yeh doin'? Mey Aye c** ihn?" the odd character bellowed, leaping over Progolo's threshold uninvited. Taken aback, Progolo stepped back to admit his entrance. His hand was shaken so vigorously he could hear his brain rattling inside him.

"Th' naymez Took!," the boy continued, sweeping past Progolo into his living room. "Nice playce...Paid well, Ey? Eh-heh! Little small compared to me own place, but pretty good, considering...aw, ain't he sweet?" Took had bent to stroke Myrrh's head with a long-fingered hand.

Progolo, dumbfounded, could only say weakly, "She."

"She, ey? Eh-heh. Sorry 'bout that. She don't talk, do she?"

"Uh...um, no--"

"Landed with th' unintelligent, tut. Tha' explayns th' size o' your house...thay prefer to give the big bucks to th' 'ardworkers."

Progolo, who'd been wondering if the spots covering the other's face were pimples or freckles, had just noticed Took's magnificent flowing cape, which actually changed color from pale green to azure blue to lilac to soft pink as he watched it. It was the official robe of a high-ranking Djinn-summoning Sorcerer...

"Excuse me," Progolo interupted softly, "but...what are you doing here?"

"Ay've come to help, o 'course!" Took declared, his voice indicating that this was most obvious. "An' no wunur about it, too...you seem lyk you could use all th' help you could get...not the brightest, ar yeh...?"

Took bustled around the sofa, poking at it as if to see if he could bruise the upholstery. Progolo could hardly believe he was being insulted by a kid who didn't look a day older than seventeen, but didn't interject.

"...Right," Progolo managed, regarding Took with mounting dislike. "Who sent you, exactly?"

"Th' society," Took replied. His voice was barely audible, as he had wandered off towards Progolo's study. The softness of his voice, however, was more than made up for by the following short scream.

There was a screech, a loud clatter, a mad scramble, and Progolo suddenly found that Took was cowering behind him.

"Whu' in BLAZES--?!" Took bellowed, looking fearful. Progolo glanced over his shoulder at him, concerned.

"What happened?"

"Sumthin tried to kiiiiiiiiiiill me!" the youth howled. "It look'd like a blinkin' lava wraith--! Wait..." Took glared at the bewildered Progolo accusingly. "You ain't registered to house wraiths, is ya...? You'll be in trouble..."

Progolo did not like the sing-songy, tattle-telling hint in his voice, but it didn't make a difference. "I don't keep wraiths...sir," he insisted, pursing his lips. "And I don't know what you're talking about."

"Tha's what all the crim'nils say, don' thay?" Took snapped, grinning maliciously. "How're ya gonna explain THIS to the society?" The youth thrust out his arm, indicating the scorch on his overly extravagant sleeve.

Something in Progolo's mind clicked, and he desperately had to fight the urge to smile. "You must have crossed Taal. It's another griffin I keep. Pyrokinetic, you see."

Took looked disgruntled. He slinked back over to another piece of furniture and began to prod at it as he had before with the couch.

Progolo stared at him uneasily. Took had seemed awfully eager to get him in trouble...
