Many people believe he is Russian.
I personally do not believe this. I believe he is Japanese. Why?
- In the manga it says he is from Japan.
- His surname is Japanese.
- He's lived in Japan for most of his life.
- He has Japanese parents in the manga.
- He has a Japanese grandfather in both the manga and anime.

His Grandfather is Russian in the anime i believe :]

I think in the dub version he could have been Russian since they seem to hint at it a little (Balkov says Kai was born at the abbey, apparently.)
Half and half is possible too.
Some people thought Voltaire was French since his name is French.

naw in the dub Boris says 'You were raised in this abbey Kai' and it's like OMGZ XD
I think in the manga it says he's half & half i'll check when my manga comes :]

No Lighty, I think Boris does say something about him having been born in the abbey.
I for one think he's half and half, because he's like... really pale. 0.o;; But he might just be Japanese. x3

In the manga, I think he is definatly full japanese (his mother and father look japanese)
In the show, I think he is half Russian, it said he was born there and grew up there. But I'm not 100% on that. I think it really is a matter of opinion. He is at least half Japanese though. that much I am sure of.
His paleness makes him even more sexy -drools- ha, fangirl moment again xp

FireTigerLightningPhoenix naw in the dub Boris says 'You were raised in this abbey Kai' and it's like OMGZ XD I think in the manga it says he's half & half i'll check when my manga comes :]  There was no abbey in the manga so Kai had no connection with Russia other than going there to do a preliminary. --- The skin colour thing is something that I thought of some time ago, it makes me think because in Series 1 Takao and Kenny have the 'Japanese skin tone', the White Tigers have the 'Chinese skin tone' and Kai is pale like Max. Though I'll have to look at more characters to see if there is a consistent use of different skin tones to possibly represent nationalities.

It's actually kind of popular to have Half-Russian and Half-Japanese characters in Japanese anime and video games. Yuri from Shadow Hearts is Half-Japanese and Half-Russian, but he still looks Japanese and even has a mostly-Japanese name (Yuri Volte Hyuga). Kai doesn't appear to have a middle name revealed, but if he did have one, I think it may be Russian.
Skin color doesn't really matter in anime, anyway.

Actually, I was going to mention it, but your signature image of Kai mostly shows what he would look like with the Season 1 Japanese skin tone.
