So I was at the movie rental place-thingy today and I noticed that almost all of the "horror" movies that have come out in the past few years really aren't that great. A lot of them seem to revolve around getting trapped in some type of shady hotel/building/chamber/room where they get chopped to pieces by rusty-looking objects. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with movies like this, except that they aren't horror, they're just gruesome. Personally, when I think "horror movie", I want to see something that doesn't rely on bloody gardening tools or cheap parlor tricks (creatures/people jumping out from behind things in an attempt to make the audience jump). I want something that is honestly scary. Something that is just feasible enough to happen in real life, none of this crap about a video that will kill you if you don't get someone else to watch it.

Are there any good actual horror movies in existance anymore? Do all "scary" movies have to take place on a holiday, Halloween in particular? Why do insane people appear so frequently in horror movies? Horror or gore?

Don't worry Jimmy, some day you're father will come back from the store...Some day...

Also, The Reaping is pretty good, meant to second that before. Disturbia sucks a** though.

You're right. Horror movies these days focus too much on disgusting the audience.

A really good horror movie doesn't leave you thinking the boogie man's gonna jump out of the closet at you, a good horror movie leaves you feeling that there is no such thing as true safety.

The only movies that have really left me with that feeling is The Grudge I (Japanese version) and The Ring I (Western Version).

Having said that, the old school horror films are great. Nightmare On Elm Street is great. whee
