So, Penny, my Quarter Horse Mare, has had lice now, since I got her. But it didn't show until yesterday, a plus 20 day here in Ontario. I saw the little $hitheads there, mocking my grooming skills on her bald spots where she rubbed the hair away. Lice on horses will only be white-ish when dead, right? Because when I saw them yesterday, the had the color scheme of a bee with orange, white, and dark brown, and had little itty bitty stripes in white on their backs, right? I deloused her with Dry Kill, and it seemed to work, but I am still unsure. Should I hose her down tomorrow to get rid of final bugs and to full remove the carcases of the dead ones, and wash away the eggs (if there is any) ? I am just wondering, because I have only dealt with Feline and Chicken lice before. Thanks.

Saikano.

Next time try:
OLIVE OIL.

Drench your horse in olive oil where he has lice and leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour. The oil suffocates and kills the lice and eggs. I went to a school where we had about 4 lice outbrakes a year, and the olive oil helped eveytime, and even got rid of the lice on my pet rat. You don't have to use harsh chemicals, and it will also condition the hair. wink

Unfortunately, I only have corn oil, but I guess that is another way.

I tried giving Penny corn oil in her feed to get rid of the dry skin, but it didn't work too well because she has lice.

Today we bathe the horse. One holds the lead, the other gets the hose! xp

I'd ask the barn owner

the best thing to do, in my experience, is to delouse the horse, wait 3 days (keep it in) and then delouse again. wait a few more days and VACUUM the horse. it removes any dead bugs, skin and hair. wait a week and delouse again. the next day vacuum the horse gain. then wait another week and delouse a last time, the next day vaccume again. it takes the nits 2 weeks to hatch, so if u do it for 3 weeks, u know uve got it all.

Saddlebred Lover - I am the owner of the stable. xD

Brat and a half - Vacuum? Won't the nose Scare the horse? o.o; I was thinking of doing what Savanna did with Telika and Sprite, just delouse, then bath the next day. But I guess your way works too...but...it seems too...tiresome. D:

it usually takes them about 30 seconds to get used to ther noise, horse vacuums (they have different filters) are quieter. and then it usually takes another 30 seconds to get them used to the sucking. but after that they dont mind it at all.

I didnt even know that animals could get lice, cause i KNOW that cats and dogs dont so i didnt think ANY animals got it. Hmmm...

I didn't use the MTG because it wasn't working on those spots because of the lice. Now the hair is growing back, but I am still cautious.

neutral cats and dogs can get lice. as can goats, chickens, cattle, rabbits, horses, people, ...yeah. there are just different kinds of lice. the lice that large grazing type animals get cant be spread to people or other types of livestock. it has to do with the kind of blood. just like if ur dog had lice, he couldnt spread it to ur horse, but he could spread it to u! and viceversa. poultry lice is different too. but there is a general powder that kills all kinds (how do i know? there wouldnt be a picture of all those kinds of animals on the bottle if it didnt xd )
