Two US lawmakers seek to protect abortion rights Quote: WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two US lawmakers introduced legislation Thursday aimed at codifying a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy, one day after the Supreme Court banned a controversial late-term abortion procedure The proposed law would codify abortion rights for the first time, said Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler (news, bio, voting record), who joined the effort launched by Senator Barbara Boxer (news, bio, voting record). The legislation "would bar government -- at any level -- from interfering with a woman's fundamental right to choose to bear a child, or to terminate a pregnancy," Nadler said. "We can no longer rely on the Supreme Court to protect a woman's constitutional right to choose" he said. "This Supreme Court may have gone out of the business of protecting women's rights; it is time that Congress stand up to the challenge." A divided Supreme Court voted 5-4 Wednesday to uphold a 2003 law passed by Congress banning what critics call "partial birth abortion." The bellwether ruling was a major victory for conservative forces in the United States, which have battled for decades to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing a woman's legal right to terminate a pregnancy. It is the first time the high court has upheld a ban of a specific abortion procedure since Roe v. Wade. The fate of the legislation offered Thursday is unclear as Democratic leaders, who control Congress since January, did not promise a debate on the divisive issue. I LIKE the sound of that. biggrin let's hope this get's somewhere. What's your thoughts?

I honestly believe this whole abortion ban will not last. It'll be there... maybe a few months, a year, or a few years but eventually it'll be gone. But I do like the sound of people fighting back because this ban is just ridiculous.

Surely it's just pillow talk. I don't pretend to think anything will come of it... especially since King George will reserve his ever ellusive veto-ing power to for just such an event.

I agree that it won't last, but how many women will have to sacrifice their emotional/physical health and possibly their lives while the legal battles to challenge the law ensue? Also, does anyone know the exact number of this proposal, so I can write to my reps in support of it?

They don't understand that there will be women who's lives will be at stake over this law and I can't even predict what the answer to that will be.

Don't forget that. If they can somehow pull off the two-thirds vote necessary. I don't know the exact make-up of Congress in regards to the issue, but only 4% of vetos have ever been overturned, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

How depressing. So the question is this: How many of our reps and senators are REALLY pro-life and pro-choice, and how many of them are just called that because they will call themselves anything to stay popular? ie: Which pro-lifers are going to change their views when their constituents ask not for protecting the almighty fetus, but to save the women who are dropping like flies because their choice was taken away? Right now, it seems like they're all jumping on the pro-life bandwagon 'cause that's what's getting votes. But it doesn't seem like many of them have a real opinion either way.

Come on gals and guys, we have to have some hope for something. If we're pessimistic and cynical all the time, then of course nothing will go our way and we'll lose every battle. sad

I know, I know.
I just feel like we're on a side that has little support, and is always going to because of social stigmas and simple human nature. Think about it: Human instinct tells us to breed like crazy. That's why people are so freaked out by any suggestion of harm to a child, and they think of a fetus as being a baby. Instinctually, humans want to have babies. It's not logic, it's nature. And it's hard to fight something like that. You can't talk sense into people when it comes to a biological instinct.
And the right-to-life movement and media, with their spread of innacurracies and outright lies, are not helping.
People are pro-choice because of empathy. But apparantly empathy is something that has to be learned. Most people have simply never thought about what they would do if faced with an unplanned pregnancy. It's okay with them to punish other people for sex, but they don't realize it could happen to them ,too.
Sorry. I'm just tired and worried, I guess.

Then are you to tell me it's not 'natural' for a female to not want to be pregnant? That a woman who does not want to have any children in her lifetime not 'natural'? Is the fear felt by women all over the world, past and present at that fact of finding they're pregnant, that fear that pushes them to extremes to get rid of the fetus not 'natural'?
Pro lifer's can't comprehend that a woman's want of not being pregnant is 'natural'. They don't comprehend that women will go to such lengths and why, to be rid of a pregnancy at any cost. confused Pro lifers look at the world in black and white. The world is gray and abortion is real, and it is very natural. In the human and animal world. (We just don't eat our babies)
Just because they may take away safe practices of abortion does not mean it will stop. Abortion will always be a reality. And I refuse to let them have any satisfaction of defeat from me.

Trite~Elegy Just because they may take away safe practices of abortion does not mean it will stop. Abortion will always be a reality. And I refuse to let them have any satisfaction of defeat from me.That was why I first became pro-choice. I didn't like the idea of abortion, but I recognised that it would happen anyway, and I'd rather it was safe. I still kinda feel that way - I can understand why a woman would choose to abort, but I'm not sure if I could cope with it. Emotional appeals is why I was pro-life at first, and there's always been a little conflict inside me, but I'd rather recognise the choice to abort than take it away.
