Cerean Dry humour and a penchant and immunity to fire are the things that make Cere unique. Cere in this RP has become fully grown and has been Syd's companion for a long time. Elise Elise is also very young currently, and so will not have much impact on Shauna's story for the time being. Mah dust bunny. His story will be interesting...just collecting dust for a while.

The day was typical for any spring month just transitioning from winter...it was cool, and the rain was heavy in the thick air....still, there was a low soup like fog that clung to the valley like shapes in the surrounding...the moisture was everywhere. Syd was walking home after his usual morning stroll...he enjoyed walking even during the long deathly embrace of winter. His favorite walking times were in this transitional phase where the world was slowly coming alive again, and new life was surging forth from the snow and frost. He made it a point to keep the shard he found close, as his natural attunement to the life flow helped him to sense a faint presence in it...faint..but growing. It came to him one morning, surprise and uncertainty surrounding it's entry in his life. He opened his door to get the morning paper one day, and found a small package wrapped in brown paper on his doorstep. There was no return address, nor any form of addressing he could notice. He picked it up, examined the package carefully, and then proceeded to get the paper and come to the kitchen. Unwrapping it slowly, as Syd was unsure of it's contents, he was surprized to find a small shard of glass inside..what right minded fool would take such care to package a piece of broken mirror? He then sensed a faint energy in the glass and understood one thing: this was no ordinary shard of mirror, but what it was was still a mystery. There were literally thousands of possibilities and none of them was presenting itself to him immediately...he was unsure of things at this point...he did not know what to make of this special gift he recieved. He took several moments to study it and examine the energy he felt in it, and at that point decided that it wasn't evil. It was an odd memory, and he had kept the glass with him ever since. He was so focused on the little life that was in this piece of glass in his hands before him that he barely noticed the small red fox ensnared in a hunter's cruel trap...the poor thing had it's leg caught in the sharp metal teeth of a device and it was clearly suffering. Moving in a half-walk half-run, Syd made his way to the fallen creature with haste, and began to assess it's damages and it's predicament. He placed the shard of mirror in a safe spot..barely noticing the brief reflection of the fox in it. After a few moments...Syd noted that it would be difficult to pry the creature free and save it's life in the process, so he decided with a heavy heart that the most compassionate thing to do would be to end it's suffering.... After giving the creature a proper burial, he walked back to the trail, making sure to check on his shard on the way there. His first inspection of the small piece of glass on his way back to the road made him halt in his step...it was glowing. He knew of magic items being awakened, and how they would glow when activated...he was now curious as to exactly what he held. He did know that any magic item must be treated with care, and that most magical items where life essences were present were not to be treated with disregard. He made his way home post-haste and retreated to his study. For once, he welcomed how warm Cerean, another of his companions and his first pet ever. He was curled up near the fireplace, but if he had his way, he would make his bed the burning embers inside it: he was not only immune to fire, but instead preferred it to anywhere else. He was not to go in the fire though, as the chance was there that he would burn the house down, and that would greatly displease all of the residents of the home, both human and otherwise. Syd began to scour the many books in the study, stopping every few hours to check on the shard of glass-like mirroring to see if any changes took place, and also to check, feed, and water his companions. He was so engrossed in his studies and caring for his other pets, that he neglected to fix himself something to eat. It was becoming a habit of his; to forget his necessities due to being how engrossed in whatever caught his attention at the moment. The fires were down to fumes in their metal cradle when Syd decided that he knew nothing of what this shard of glass was...he only knew that it was important, and that whatever came of it needed to be cared for and treated well. That said, he placed the small piece of glass on a bed in a guest room...he did not have much company, but kept several of his home's bedrooms open just in case someone needed a place to stay. Remembering Cerean's preference for heat, Syd took new fuel to the dying fires and rekindled the flames for his friend. Cerean hummed in appreciation, and drew himself closer inward. Then the young elf realized that he needed to eat something before hunger took him too, and made his way to the kitchen. He made a small meal of some meats and bread and cheese, a traveller's feast; and after finishing did a final check on the house and his charges, he made his way to his bed.

The shard could not express it's appreciation for the one who'd found it - it seemed lucky to have found someone that could feel it's presence as something more than a shard of a broken mirror. It's faint glow seemed content and stable throughout, as it was placed on a bed in front of a warm fire. It was so content and comfortable, perhaps, that it didn't see the need to change. That is, until it was left alone. The night wore on, and the fire began to die out. Lying on the cold bed in silence, the spirit within wondered just how long the night would last.. ..and minutes later, decided that was too long already. The dying embers of fire burst to life one last time in witness of a transformation, as the shard shuddered and shook, before melting away like a piece of ice held to a flame. There, in it's place, lying face down on the bed, was a baby girl. Into the softness of the bed she began to cry. Perhaps now someone would relieve her of all this dreadful lonely silence.

Syd was awakened suddenly from his slumber by his first companion, Cerean. Looking at the alarm clock resting on his nightstand, he sighed painfully. It was three in the morning...too early for anything. "Syd, we have a guest. It would not be courteous to keep her waiting.", Cerean said as he sat down. "Who would come at this hour of the night? I don't know too many lady friends that would...and certainly none that would come over uninvited.", Syd moaned as he tried to wake himself enough to make himself presentable. He pushed his body to a sitting position..which took some effort on his part, as he was still very much so tired. He would not want to walk today..he had not gotten to sleep until very late last night. Still, he had a guest, and he was not one to be rude. Getting out of bed slowly, he made his way to his closet, got on a houserobe, and started towards the restroom to make himself presentable, when Cerean stopped him. "Syd, I think she will not care how you look...I don't think that would matter to her much." Cerean said as he sat in the doorway. "Hmm...okay. Lead the way, my friend." Syd said to his gemgoyle as he made his way to the door. He did not know what to expect at this point, as this was not something of an everyday occurence to him. He followed Cerean to the room where he had left the shard..and immediately felt something different. The life essence he felt from the piece of broken mirror was...changed. But how? Then he remembered the glow...and slowly opened the door. In place of where the shard had been, a baby girl now lay. Approaching it, he was seemingly at a loss for words...the shard held..a child? Examining the child, he noticed a few things already about her..that she had paws instead of hands and feet, and that many of her features were that of a familiar animal. He remembered the fox..had that been the trigger? Was this the fox's retribution? It's thanks? What did it all mean? Then Syd did the only thing he felt certain of..he scooped up the small child, and cradled her in his arms. The child still wept, but not as much as if she were still on the bed before her. Is this same man the person that saw that it was something more when it was a shard? She sniffled, and caught his scent..it was. She calmed a little more, and felt a little more at ease. Then she could feel his heartbeat when he held her..it seemed like a soft, muffled drumming feeling, but it was a welcome thing. The man started moving..where was he going. Was he going to put her down again? Would he leave her alone? Syd held her close, and began to wonder what he should do at this point...he knew that keeping her was the best choice, and that he had the necessaries to do so..for the most part. He still needed bottles and daipers..come to think of it, her tail would probably get in the way of any conventional daiper that was on the market today...most kitsune families that he knew of had to modify theirs...or adapt. He would not force this little girl to adapt, oh no. Then a rather brilliant idea came to him...he would make the daipers out of cloth. That way, he could control how they fit on her. He could put a button on the back, so that they could fasten around her tail, and not be an issue. He grinned at the thought that he would be like a father..even if it was a little odd that his "daughter" was not his by birth. He made his way to his favorite chair, and had a seat. It was a comfortable reclining chair, and it felt soft on his back. The little child almost rejoiced when she saw that she wasn't going to be left alone..she didn't like that feeling. She wanted to say something..but instead, only cooing came out of her mouth..still, it made the man smile, moreso than he was already. She wondered about a lot of things concerning her immediate situation, mostly her safety...but she felt like she could sleep now..so she did. Syd looked down and saw that the little child was now asleep, kissed her forehead, and decided to rest himself. He asked Cerean to find him a blanket, and placed it over the both of them, and there he lay for the rest of the evening. He had many things to think about...but none that would concern him for the rest of the evening.

Syd awoke the next morning in an unfamiliar setting. While he had slept on his favorite reclining chair before, he had never had anything living near him when he did so. So that when he looked down to find a small puddle of drool forming on his sleeping shirt with a baby attached to it, he was rather startled. He would have jumped out of his seat, but he was faintly able to remember the events of what had happened the night before. He remembered his faithful companion Cerean alerting him of a new arrival, and of the reason he woke up with a child sleeping on top of him. He smiled a little, as he was lacking in sleep yet again, and wondered what the day would bring him. As he had one of it's surprizes already, he knew that it would have to be a rare day indeed. It was while he was absorbed in his own thought (which was usual) that the child awoke. She looked up into his eyes and paused, and then started crying. I'm hungry now! the child thought as she sobbed loudly. The newly awakened child looked around for edible things, yet nothing presented itself. Then she noted that Syd's shirt was soft, and that it didn't seem to need teeth to chew on. So she bit down a little on the soft fabric he so enjoyed, trying to eat something. Syd was snapped back to reality all of the sudden, when he saw the child crying and then trying to eat his shirt. He figured that the child must be hungry, and that he will most likely need a new shirt once she started teething. But that was not a problem for him, as he had a few like this already. He cradled the child again, and went into the kitchen. He noted that his stomach hurt as well, and figured that they both would need a meal. As he saw that she was still in the process of gaining her teeth, she would need liquid or pureed food. Unsure of where to place her while he fixed their breakfasts, he went back to the study, grabbed a few pillows, and made a small bed for her. Apparently, she was not one to lay down anymore, and so tried crawling to find some food. Syd almost did not notice as he was getting the blender out of the cabinet it was in, yet Cerean did. He chuckled a little, and then proceeded to alert his friend. "Syd, your guest is trying to escape your hospitality." Cerean said, clearly amused with the scene before him. Syd took a look at the Gemgoyle, confused a little, and then looked down at where the baby kitsune was. It seemed she was not satisfied with where she lay, and chose to do something about it. Syd wondered for a moment whether or not he should pick her up, as all babies need to learn to crawl before they walk, but it seemed she didn't need help in learning that, as she already had it down fairly well. So Syd decided to scoop her up, and carried her back to where he was preparing their food. As he remembered that foxes were normally omnivores, he got some of the meats and cheese that he had last night, and put them in the blender along with a little milk to make the mixture into something more than a paste. When all was done, he began to feed her. Once breakfast was over for the both of them, she proceeded to her normal cooing, while he proceeded to fetch the paper. Then he remembered that this little girl needed a name as well, and before ever setting foot outside, he went to his study to get a book on baby names. Flipping through the pages, one name stuck out. Shauna. "I think I will name you Shauna." Syd said as he held the child up in the air. Shauna seemed to like the name, as she giggled a little and flailed her arms when she heard it. Having finished naming her, Syd took Shauna with him to fetch the paper. It was one of the few normal things that he would do today, yet it still seemed out of place on a day like this. Picking up the paper, He noted that there was a small business card attached to it. "Benedict Center for the yet to be Morally Corrupted" He read aloud, forgetting the paper that was his only reason for going out there to begin with. Cerean went outside with him, and almost had a laughing fit when he saw that he was once again forgetting one of his tasks. So Cerean grabbed the paper and made his way into the house. "Just another normal day for our aloof elven champion." Cerean chuckled as he put the paper down on the table in the kitchen. As Syd made his way back to the study, he flipped over the mysterious business card. The only thing on the back of the card was an address. Somehow, he wondered if this Benedict center and the little girl he held in his arms before him were in any way connected. As it was highly possible, he decided to venture out tommorrow with Shauna to see if there was some explanation to be offered. *** (Later on in the day) *** Exhausted after finishing a long day of hard work with caring for his new daughter, Syd chose to lay his head down on the first bed he came to. It would have been Cerean's, yet the cushion he lay on was full, as Cere was a sizable being. He instead chose to carry Shauna upstairs, and find his old cradle his mother had used for him. After confirming that the sheets were in a state of dire need for repair, Syd took them off and discarded them. He then found new sheets on another bed that was unused, and placed them in there in such a way as to not leave the child smothered and still in comfort. Afterwards, Syd settled in for what he hoped was a long night's sleep, all the while expecting to be awakened at any time by the loud sounds of crying. His last thought before sleep took him was of the long day he would have tommorrow...

The next morning, Syd pushed himself up out of his bed, and got everything into order before making his trip to the Benedict Center. As he figured he might need something of backup in case things got rather interesting, he instructed his Gemgoyle Cerean to accompany him to the facility, and hid a knife under his light robes. It would not be much along the lines of comfort were things to take a turn for the worse, but it would be better than having nothing at all. After making sure that everyone was well fed and prepared for the trip, Syd went about the necessaries of what would be needed while the house was left unattended. Instead of the customary meat and cheese that he had given her before, Syd chose to feed Shauna that and another smoothie mixture of strawberries and other assorted fruits, of which she enjoyed to no end. Indeed, she almost ended up wearing most of the mixture, as her arms flailed out of joy. Syd wondered what sorts of mischeif she would one day get herself into, from which he would invariably pull her out of, and he smirked.
Having finished all of the necessary preparations, Syd got everything ready for the trip over, and made it a point to kiss his new daughter on the forehead while he held her just before placing her in the carseat he had just bought for her the other day. Cerean made his way to the back of the car, and after getting in, the springs strained a little due to his weight. He was accustomed to it, and it was the reason that Syd made a point to replace them often. Syd made his way to the driver's seat, and began the journey to this mysterious facility in hopes of finding some answers to the many riddles he had about the new child, and how he was fortunate enough to have her.
