Uggae thats all fun and good if your doing a kata or poomse...A form, But in a stretch you defeat the purpose of actually doing it if you don't stretch to your maximum.

Tdunks, first keep doing that stretch as well as possible. over time you leg will become use to it again and allow the knee to Go all the way. To help speed things along shock treatment works well(probably not the correct terms but eh) and simple stretches that apply pressure to your kne should help.

example: have you better leg straight, toes facing towards the side with your not so good leg on its heel and out in front a bit. then you reach down and grab your extended foots toes with one hand and slowly apply pressure with the other.

That exercise really helped me get over my knee problems. I still have them mind you, but atleast I can go full out without serious injury being around the corner.

(and by still having knee problems I mean my knees ache from time to time)

I know of the move, its not just in karate, but its also used as a stretch and its easier to think of it as a stretch when working with knee injurys then it is a stance.

oh your front stance is slightly different then mine its pretty much the same as yours but I keep the back leg slightly bent so it is eayser to move back and foward its a trick my instructor taught us that makes the front stance viable in a real fight were also taught how to abereavate(sp?) our stances also for practical applactation(sp)

...If you ever used a front stance in a real fight against me I would kick your a** so easily. lol, theres just limited mobility with the front stance and its slower to step back or forward no matter what, its a easy way to have you leg taken out.

In the front stance the purpose of a straight back leg is to create a strong line between the technique (be that punch, block whatever) and the floor. If your leg isn't straight at the moment of impact the stance is weak and there's no point using it. When using it in a practical application of course you aren't going to step forward kata style. You'd straighten your leg "instantaneously", i.e. stay loose with bent legs right up to the moment of impact, then right at the instant of impact straighten the back leg and rotate your hips and shoulders into it, then relax again.
As for stretching the only advice I can give is if its due to injury be very very careful how you go about it and take it very easy. There should be absolutely no pain

Well, considering I'm coming back from a knee injury right now, (I've been out since January for knee surgery), the doctor to me to sit on a chair, prop my leg up on a table or something, and put a bag of ice and a book or something on top of the knee. The more weight (the book) you put on the knee the straighter it will go, but start slow. The ice helps something, but I don't remember what, do this for about 10 minutes with the wait on, then take the wait off and just leave the ice for 10 more minutes. Do this like 2 times a day every day and you'll notice a dramatic difference in how far you can straighten your leg after just one time. You just have to do it every day, because your knee will start to stiffen up, and then you'll be back to where you were.

Hope this helped. 3nodding

i wouldn't be to shure about that i can move almost faster than i run in a front stance
and about what darklingglory said about strightning the leg before impact i do, do that but any other time then the moment of in pact im taught to keep my body relaxed to go with the principle of shin chook or tension and relaxation you have to keep both in balance or if too relaxed your blows will do nothing if to tence your moves will expend to much energy.

It is not a practical stance. FOr it to be practical we shorten it but that is a formal stance for in class only.

The exact same thing happened to my foot. It won't bend correctly so I look strange cause I am just continually kicking with one leg.

I wouldn't use any stance (hard styles like tkd, karate etc) in a real situation in an unmodified state. I mean sitting/horse stance? Noooo way.... The point of doing these stances and such in my opinion is to condition your body into certain principles, so front stance teaches you to strike off the rear foot for one example
