Personality: Undine is an intelligent mare and proud of this intellect as well as her status as a Katilenuck tactician. She believes in the supremacy of Jala but will not destroy other breeds out of hand save for Reya or obvious Reya crossbreeds. She feels that those of lower blood have a right to life which ought to be respected so long as they not interfere with Jala, especially Katilenuck. She is deeply loyal to the herd and its leaders; despite not being the bravest of Nequus she will do anything to protect it. Usually she achieves this in her role as a tactician but, if caught alone by enemies, she would willingly sacrifice herself to defend their territory and way of life.

Location: Fyhi tel Oren

Undine's Tree

This specimen is difficult to miss thanks to snow-white bark and vivid foliage. Like the mare born from it, the tree it stands tall, straight and proud among its neighbours and the workings of her sharp mind along with her successes are displayed in the form of small mementoes kept in a small hole in the trunk. These knickknacks range from the horn of the first Reya brought down by her tactics to a small lock of hair taken from the Aeri slave who was her slave from his birth until his death at the hooves of those she had sent him to spy on.

The colours of the tree change vastly throughout the year thanks to its leaves. In the spring, azure leaves spring from the previously bare white branches but as summer comes the blue fades through to a verdant green. As the days shorten once more, the leaves change once more to a vivid yellow before falling to earth as winter comes leaving the branches bare until the spring comes again and the cycle resumes.

Undine in Detail

As the majority of her life is spent thinking rather than more physical tasks, Undine is not a very muscular Nequus. Rather, she is slim, long-limbed and her movements then to be agile and graceful rather than quick, though when pressed her legs give her a fair turn of speed.

Before noting her build however, most find their eyes drawn to the mare’s colouring. The vivid blue and stark white of her coat and curling mane and tail are hard to miss in the ruddy surroundings of the Katilenuck herd lands. On drawing closer to her, an observer would note also the rich amber-brown of her eyes and, at this point, they would probably be treated to a singularly calculating look by said eyes.

All in all, the tactician gives the impression of pride, intelligence and a distinct lack of patience with idiots. This impression is entirely correct; Undine is cleverer than most, knows it and is often rather frustrated by it. She finds it difficult to rely on others, or to delegate as she feels others will not give the same level of care and attention to detail as she does and this leads her to be something of a workaholic, often a rather stressed one.

Thanks in part to this and in part to her lack of patience with people less intelligent than herself, the yellow-eyed mare has few friends and this leads her to place great value upon those she does have. She will put aside her usual obsession with duty if somebody she cares about needs her and in extreme cases will even circumnavigate orders to help a friend out of a sticky situation.

Biography

Born to a tactician and a soldier, Undine was the only fruit on her tree. She took her colouring mostly from her sire, and her temperament and mind mostly from her dam. The two adults were not in love and never pretended to be; it was always made clear to the blue and white filly that though they respected one another their match was one of convenience and no more, the main aim of said match being to produce children.

The deal had been that once the children were old enough to return to the herdlands, the tactician would take and raise any fillies and the soldier any colts. Though there were no brothers for Undine’s sire to take on, he did not seem to resent his duties to the family. After all, he said, there could be more foals another time and he had no intention on failing the first of his bloodline out of petty jealousy.

So it was that when she was taken back to the red mountain Undine began to follow in her dam’s hoofprints. She had little time for play with others her age, preferring the company of adults and conversation to racing about and playing tag. The only Nequus of her own age with whom she regularly associated was the aptly named Guard, her own personal Aeri slave given to her by her father as a gift on their arrival in the herlands.

As might be gathered from this gift, despite the fact that she was no longer his responsibility her sire remained an important figure in her life until his death in battle about a year after the small family’s return to the mountain. The paint filly and her mother agreed that they would miss the loyal, strong if slightly dense stallion but that he had died for something that both they and he believed to be right and that this was good.

When she came to adulthood, Undine was quickly accepted as an official tactician; as she had spent her foalhood watching her mother work she required very little training before it was felt that she was ready to plan out real battles rather than simulations (as much for the training of soldiers as of tacticians.) Not long after she planned out her first battle, the paint mare’s dam was killed on the lower slopes of the red mountains by an Aeri couple in vengeance for the loss of their son and grandson. Undine, who was with her at the time, would probably have died to if not for the intervention of Guard, who took the old couple to pieces without mercy. The experience shook the previously confident young mare and for many moons she would not so much as let Guard out of her sight. Though she relaxed somewhat after a time had passed she remained more cautious than she had been, but with this came a renewed determination to see all who dared to trouble the Katilenuck lands dead.

Since this time, Undine has worked her way up through the ranks and is now doing rather well for herself. Guard has remained by her side throughout the various successes and failures that she has experienced and, though she would not admit it to anyone, she is rather fond of him. Most important in her life however is her duty to the herd, and her ambition to rise higher within it. Woe betide any that cross the yellow-eyed mare; unless they outrank her they will probably find themselves ripped to shreds by her tongue and then booted squarely in the backside by ever-present Guard.

F - Strongly dislike; if S treat with respect. If E treat with contempt but respect for skill. If L treat with great contempt. If other rank, do not hesitate to kick unless this poses a threat to health or might hinder the herd (e.g. do not hit soldiers anywhere that will hinder their work, do not permanently damage Sl if they are of high value or prized by their owner)

List:

R Stallion, name unknown - R, F A frightening creature who's presence I cannot tell of. A dead, evil thing in our good lands. I hope never to see that black face again

Xla'lanan - S, A - My mate. I love him dearly, his wit, his courage, all of him, even his occasional petulance and cockiness.

R mare (Rhea) - R, F This white b***h wandered past my tree a few days ago. Fortunately she left before long and I warned her to keep away from the red mountain unless she wished to die the horrible death she so sorely deserves to.

Zara - L, A My dear daughter. She is bright and keen to follow in my hoofprints as a tactician. What more could a mother want?

Virgil - S, C Virgil is Dahak's Bae slave. A good worker and insanely loyal; and excellent slave indeed.

Eilir - S, D Eilir, a slave belonging to one Hera. She's just a slave.

Xerris - L, A Xerris is an ambitious girl, and I'm proud of her for that. Wish she'd turn that ambition somewhere other than hunting for magic and fairy dust, but there you have it. Ah well.

Dahak - E, A He's a bit too proud of his magic, a bit too fond of his rank but he's a good Katilenuck in the end, and I love him dearly despite his faults.

Xenos - L, F No more needs to be said; just an idiot I met once.

Malachi N, F Some little idiot, he was useful to me but really very annoying.

Sekhmet L, C A bright mare, and a good addition to the herd. It would be nice if she hadn’t felt the need to run off and see her family, but she always returns and I know where her loyalty lies. Admittedly it is to Dahak not the herd or the queen, but I still like her; my son really ought to stop messing about and ask her to be his mate.

Spyke N, D I only spoke to him for a few moments, he is insignificant.

Aquila NJ, E Annoying girl, doesn’t deserve her wings. I can’t believe Sekhmet is related to such an idiot.

Queen Savt’Taren S, B My queen, my loyalty to her in unquestioning. In addition to this, I have discovered that I like her on a personal level. She is kind, intelligent, and fair. A great leader indeed.

“Tactical advisor” - My new job title, though in truth I shall be a spy for my Queen. All dissenting thoughts within the herd she shall know, and as I improve perhaps I shall be able to give her news from further afield too. I have a long way to go before I master this magic, maybe true mastery is not even possible, but I shall develop this... this power as much as I can. I suppose in a way I am glad it happened to me, at least I know this magic is being used for us rather than against.

((Mixed feelings - Xla. Damn you, you idiot. So blinded by hate for magic that... well, I don’t much like it either to be honest but it’s not like I asked for this. It’s just something that happened to me, and something I can use for the good of the herd. I don’t plan to flaunt it like our Illusionist and out Shaman do, the fewer people know of this the happier I shall be.)) tbc.

Time to return - I met and had to beat up an non Katilenuck Jala, seems she’s the half sister of the one I first realised my powers around. My control is quite good now and I think it is time to head for home. My magic will be of great worth to my herd, I know it will.

Practice - Used a stupid little aeri to practice my magic on. I’m starting to gain more control, but I still can’t get a good night’s sleep. Must learn to shut out the voices.

Realisation - So, that explains it. Seer magic. Now I know what I’m dealing with at least... this is going to be interesting to say the least.

Losing battle - Some idiot civillian... I can’t think. So many voices. I have to get away from here.

Worsening - Voices. I can hear voices. I can’t be going mad. I can’t.

The buzz - I have a heacahe, a strange one and Dahak can’t fix it. I am not pleased.

Mother and daughter - Today I took Xerris to see her dear magical brother. Seems she has ambitions in that area. Xla is going to have a fit.

Just Dropping In - Fell of cliff into slave watering hole. Fell like a part, but manage to play it off alright. Dahak’s slave was there with the mare’s he’s to be bred with, and I’ve decided to try to get one of the foals and to hurry up the production of said foals; I’m tired of not having a slave of my own.

This time I’ll do it right - Well, here I am in Shrilal again. This time there are two fruits, I hope one is a filly.

Learn from the best - Zara came to see me today. We talked briefly about a battle that I am currently overseeing but soon moved onto testing her tactical skills.

Heirs and protégés pt2 - Well, I did survive and now I have three sons and a daughter. They are all healthy and I couldn’t be happier.

Breakfast? - Gah! More bloody Reya. I swear I must be a magnet for the bloody things. Apparently this one was looking for its daughter and her spawn. It left before long though, fortunatly.

Heirs and protégés - My tree. Mine and Xla’s. He’s looking after me very well, but I can feel my strength draining away the more the saplings grow. Still, I shall survive.

After a fall - Just after my fall Xla'Lanan (S) appeared seemingly from nowhere. I spoke to him of what happened and he suspects magic. I don't know what to make of it for myself. he left me in the safety of a sandy canyon and went to report to the queen

According to plan? - A disaster. Was taken by surprise by R; he was dead. Succeeded in backing over a ledge, bruising my ribs and damaging my right wing.

Today I was making some adjustments to my plans for the removal of the Aeri herd when I was interrupted by a voice. I turned to reprimand them for distracting me and, when I saw what it was, I near died of shock. A black Reya stallion; his tails wrong for the breed but the rest in place. And the flames. Bluish flames that were not of this world. As it turned out, nor was he.

Dead he said and I had no trouble believing him. Whilst I saw him clearly, looking at him was hard somehow and not out of simple fear, though that was present too. He wished to know what I was about but before he could find out I scuffed away my patterns and began to retreat. Sadly I managed to retreat right over the ledge and fall to the ground below.

I don’t think I have ever felt so much panic in such a short space of time as today.

Just after my fall the royal advisor appeared on the scene. He was quite kind to me, tolerating my muddled thoughts and slow, limping pace. He took me to a safe place, where he left me to go in search of the queen and a doctor.

The healer arrived with me before long and has patched me up; I am assured I'll take no permanent harm from this. Fortunately I am now back at my planning now and feeling much better; all I await is the return of Guard. With luck he will have been able to creep in among his own kind and discover what their exact numbers and perhaps some little of what they plan to do when we clash

Another notable development is my new system for displaying plans physically. I am going to have shaped, coloured pebbles made for me to represent various things. These will be: friend, foe and neutral; single unit, five, ten and twenty strong; elite unit.

I think this will be a lot more practical than drawing patterns and easier to explain to people who are not overly familiar with my system. The day has improved somewhat to say the least.

Guard returned to me some hour or two ago and now he is dead. He found out how many Aeri remain; they were twenty-five strong when he was discovered and now they are twenty-one.

Still, he has given me what I needed to know and was able to die in the knowledge that his life was given to something greater than himself. Despite his breed I cared for Guard; he had been with me since I was a filly and he just a foal. I shall miss his huge presence but life moves on. I must acquire myself another slave soon but not before those damned Aeri are wiped out.

My plans are almost complete and I shall communicate them to the soldiers by sundown. They will attack at moon-high and by dawn every one of the invaders shall be dead. Once I have reported my success higher up the chain of command, I shall go to one of the slavers to inspect their stock.

The Aeri herd is destroyed, all the preparation was worthwhile; I couldn't have asked for better. No casualties on our side and only a few minor injuries. I can now focus on recovering from my encounter with the thrice-damned Reya and on finding myself a new slave.

I am in no great hurry to do the latter however; I do not want just any old thing the slavers have picked up out of the dirt. Another Aeri might be nice; they're strong, dependable sorts and loyal if you catch them early enough. I hear that the purple slaver whose name currently escapes me has some of the breed among his new stock but I have also heard that some of the royals are looking to take a slave on from this batch. I do not think it worth the trouble to go down there only to see something I like snatched away from me. For now I shall wait; I can function quite well without a guard by my side I am sure.

Once the Aeri were gone I was granted leave from my duties to finish recovering from my injuries. I chose to leave the safety of the herdlands, leaving Ochre in charge of my interests, in this time in order to visit my tree in Shrilal. Or so I believed. My journey was uneventful enough, though I did find myself eating more than usual and thus putting on some weight.

When I arrived on the outskirts of the fruitlands however, I found myself drawn not to the tree from which I was born but to a place I have never visited before.

After quite some walking I discovered what had drawn me onward. Two saplings, growing and beginning to intertwine. Children. My children. This is somewhat unexpected but welcome nonetheless. I do not think I could have chosen a better time to have foals let alone a better sire for them. I have not been this exited for some time.

Xla'lanan has arrived and is now taking very good care of me. I have never learned much about fruit trees, an oversight which I regret very much, but so far as I can tell our four children are healthy and growing well.

I am tiring very quickly of late but this much at least I had expected. Thanks to the weight I put on during my trip here I hope not to become too weak during the tree's development; as soon as the foals are born I wish to be up and about and teaching them things. I hope for at least one girl and at least on boy but, in the end, I am sure I shall love them all no matter what their appearance or gender.

They are my children and I am their mother; that is all.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:53 am

The fruits are very large now and sometimes they move on their branch. I think they will hatch soon. Xla’lanan continues to care for me and though I am very tired and quite weak of late I am happy.

Was happy.

Then that damned Reya mare turned up and nearly trod on my last apple. I was afraid of her but not as afraid as I expected to be; the only thing that kept me from fighting her was my duty to my children. Perhaps it has something to do with them, my newfound backbone. I certainly don’t recall my own mother fleeing from anything but sadly my sample is limited mostly to her; I do not know many mothers.

Still, after a while the white b***h left and I returned to my watch over the fruits. I have found myself becoming most sentimental of late and am beginning to ponder names for them. I do not know for certain, as we have not discussed it yet, but I think Xla’lanan might name two each seen as there are four of them.

Thus floating off in my own little happy bubble of impending motherhood, my good mood soon returned. No point letting one abomination ruin an otherwise perfectly good day. When the royal advisor returns I think I shall have to speak to him about this naming idea of mine; I hope he will be agreeable to it.

My children hatched today; three sons and a daughter. I am, for want of a better phrase, over the moon. They’re all healthy and beautiful and I can’t wait to teach them all the things they need to be taught. I wish my parents were alive to see them all, but perhaps if there is anything after death they know and are proud of me. They all need names, but for now that will have to wait. I am utterly exhausted, so I shall sleep now. I’m sure I shall be able to think of better names once I can think straight again.
