Okay, after all the excessive arguing, I've come to the conclusion, we need a thread to specifically talk about the influences upon metal. If you don't care for this, tough. If it weren't for some of the influences, what we know and love wouldn't be around now. So, if you don't like the bands talked about in this thread, avoid arguing and do not flame those that do.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, while not being power metal themselves, had a large influence on the genre 3nodding
And Tolkien had a huge effect on some metal.Stratovarius,Nightwish etc. all have lots of LOTR themes and Blind Guardian have a concept album based on The Silmarillon.

pythagorean mathematics - pythagoras did come up with the first scales and chords, after all...

and for whoever asked in the other thread - yes BB King is still around and touring. no he hasn't stopped, despite what that other guy said. i saw him a few years ago and just missed a chance to see him again this winter. sad but the first time he was AMAZING biggrin

Well, by the looks of it, this thread is going to incite lots more grumbling and arguing, so why not get into the spirit of things? My point...I'm wondering whether or not early Sabbath teeters more toward the metal end or the rock end. The Dio years are metal, f'sure, but I'm talking early 70s here. I ponder this because, well, they are (debatably) THE gateway band between metal and rock.

They were the first metal band. I think all of their stuff is metal. They are very close, but they had a darker feel than any other rock band of the time. They were a transitional band, but they were metal to begin with. Just look at "Iron Man", and "Paranoid".

no you aren't listening closely enough. lots of metal relates to LOTR, and other fantasy series (i found one band that bases their music on stephen king's dark tower series). it's common in power metal, and even some black metal. actually, gorgoroth got their name from LOTR - the plateau of gorgoroth, a part of mordor.

Iron Man is a sure thing, and so is Paranoid to a slightly lesser extent. I was more referring to lesser-known songs like Sleeping Village and The Wizard. I'd personally be hard-pressed to call those metal.

The Soulforged is about a Character Named Raistlin majere from the Dragonlance trilogy, alot of there songs are Dragonlance based.

Raistlin majere was born frail and weaker then his twin brother Caramon. He later attained godlike status and sweet Hourglass eyes that only saw death. Yeah he's rad.

I'd usually give credit to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. Basically Great Britain and anywhere else but the US had given a lot to the genre. However, if you want to get into how the bands I listed were influenced then I'll say stuff like way early Rock and Roll along with blues.
