Quote: Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faces by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.
What are you going to do to end the silence? So reads my card that today I will show to my teachers so that I may be silent throughout the day. I am proud to say that this is my third year participating in this event which protests the discrimination of GLBTQ students and their supporters. As a GLBTQ supporter with many GLBTQ friends I feel that it is my duty to participate in this event. I have to admit, the other two years I have participated I have slipped up once or twice. It's almost impossible to say silent ALL day. But this year I hope that I won't and even if I do as long as I do my best it makes a difference. I love the idea of this protest. Being silent to protest forcing others to be silent. Usually people think that to make a difference they must speak out, but with almost 1/4 of the school being quiet all day and many others wearing pins in support (they don't think that they can be quiet all day but they still way to support) we bring a lot of attention to ourselves. I love it. ^^ I really feel like I'm making a difference just by being silent.

Being quiet all day? I may have been able to do that. I was thinking it was a one time thing when I first saw the thread. Something in mourning for the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Something in mourning for the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings. No. It has nothing to do with that. Although it is very sad. 33 students and teachers are dead. Such talented people. It is a true tragedy. But this is something that is to protest GLBTQ discrimination. It's been going on for several years now. It's a great thing.

I'm all for bis and gays, but don't you think that is over the limit?
A lot of people are discriminated against, why should they get their own day?
It just seems a little unnessesary to me.

It just seems a little unnessesary to me. GLBTQ people are the only ones I know of who are discriminated against under the law. Unless you count people who use ritualistic murder as part of their religion, which I don't. No one should be discriminated against, but when a goverment encourages such things people need to stand up and protest. If Martin Luther King Jr. had never stood up with the rest of the black community would they have as much equality in socitey now? I doubt it. The GLBTQ community must stand up and fight for their rights just as so many other groups have had to. This is one small part of that fight.

honestly, thats more up to the church than the state, even though The state is in controll of it.
And it no where says that being gay/bi/les is wrong in the bible.
But it still seems unnessary too me.
just my opinion though.

just my opinion though. And you are welcome to your opinion. ^^ Even if I once again disagree. XD The church is the one who is against the whole marriage thing, but the government is listening to them. Not only is that a violation of our constitution, it is discrimination. But GLBTQs are discriminated against by the goverment in other ways as well. Adoption, for instance. There are very few states that allow GLBTQ couples to become parents. There are so many more instances of wrongs done to GLBTQ couples. I could not possibly go into them all. The point is, our government has let these people down. They have allowed them to be discriminated against in so many ways. That is not acceptable. Discrimination is, unfortunately, unavoidable. But to ignore it completely and say that these people are somehow less because of their sexuality is unacceptable and should be protested.
