Having visited with his hinds and being introduced to his offspring, Brychan was in high spirits as any proud new father should be. The starry pelted stag making his way away from the area where most hinds congregated and heading towards the ridge in which he patrolled as an Outrider.
Happy and glad as he was, the idea of spending all night on the ridge... again.. made him sigh inwardly. He was almost to the point of exhaustion. Fell Lore had tightened Outrider security, and included even the Corps, because of the recent wolf sightings. It was a wise move.. but still tiring for the stags who had to keep constant watch... doing double or even triple shifts. Still... Brychan was proud of being an Outrider and he would do his duties to the best of his ability.
The day was cloudy, a bit dreary... with impending spring showers looming in the distance. The plants needed the rain, but being amongst the showers while on guard wasn't always pleasant either.

The rather gruff looking hind flicked her ears as she grazed, her eyes and ears pointed away from the herd. Occasionally she lifted her head for a better look, or to nose the wind. Though the Outriders were the official protection of the herd, she often stationed herself a little away from the other hinds. She could box better than many of them, and in any case she had little use for their idle conversation.
The stags were no better, though, so she did not seek out their company either. And besides, what sort of a hind would congregate with stags? She would only be a distraction to them. So she just meandered, serving the herd in her own way.
Her ears flicked again. Moving away from the gathering of hinds was a stag--a rather impressive looking royal. She harrumphed. Probably quite vain. But what would he have been doing among the hinds? Anlach had long passed. Most of the hinds had already dropped their calves, even. Curiousity overcame her apprehension. She started towards the ridge.
"What would an Outrider be doing among the hinds this time of year, hmm?"

Stepping upward along the hill that lead to his post, Brychan heard a voice behind him. He paused and turned to look behind him and downward. Blue eyes blinking curiously as he noticed a hind approaching him. Not a hind that he really knew. She wasn't exactly an attractive hind, but he was no less polite. Brychan bobbed his head in greeting to her, but his muzzle was unable to hide the joyous smile that her question brought.
"My hinds have given birth. Herne has blessed us with a calf and two fawns, and I saw them for the first time today." The stag practicly swelled with pride, eyes sparkling with the new found joys of fatherhood. Knowing that he had successfully passed on his genes to a new generation as was the goal of most deer in this world. They were beautiful children, and he did not hide his pride and joy in the least.

Ah, fawns. The stag was clearly pleased by this, enough to take the trouble to actually see the little things. Well, that would probably be the extent of his involvement with them, she suspected. That initial pride would fade, until the calf was old enough to join the Corps.
"Congratulations," she said tersely. Then with more interest, "What are their names?" Later she would have to see this stag's offspring, or at least ask about them. That was one of the few topics of hind-conversation that she did involve herself in, even if fawns of her own seemed rather unlikely.

Not if Telyn had anything to say about it. She was determined to have Brychan be as involved with their lives as was possible. It was proper for stags to keep a distance from their offspring until the males joined the Corps yes.. but there were some exceptions... although very few.
"Thank you" he replied, quickly recalling their names as she asked. He had helped name them after all. "The boy is Islwyn and his sister is Tempest... and the other fawn is Lyith." Yes, he had remembered their names well, and he wasn't soon to forget, or atleast hopefully not.
Judging by the fact that there was no young standing beside this hind, she'd had no offspring this year. Which both surprised and yet, didn't surprise him. She didn't seem to be the most social type.. infact in some ways she had quickly reminded him of Telyn. Granted, Telyn was more attractive.. cough. He was quietly curious as to why part of this hind's ear was missing. But it seemed rude to ask, atleast for now.

Islwyn, Tempest, and Lyith. They must have been born rather recently, as she didn't recall hearing those names. Yes, when she returned to the other hinds she would certainly seek them out. She was sure they must be this stag's first offspring, rather surprising given his... impressive antlers. Not much going on beneath them though. Hmph.
Ragwort pawed at the earth for a moment, thinking. Those antlers and that pelt suddenly struck her. "Aren't you that stag who challenged Fell Lore?" His name escaped her for the moment. Something rather like Brechin, she thought. Of course he hadn't bothered to ask her name. "You know you haven't even asked anything about me." Typical stag attitude.

She was rather forward wasn't she? He blinked in surprise at the mention of Fell Lore.. then at her somewhat rude observance. They had just met after all.. and he was an excited new father. Give him a moment, woman! Although Brychan wasn't nearly that rude either.
"Forgive me" he said with an apologetic dip of his head, "I don't even know your name." He didn't really know what to say given her blunt attitude. She was even more snarky than Telyn. He paused, trying to think of something else to say, "Do you have any children? And yes, I challenged Fell Lore." It was obvious that she didn't have any this year, but he wasn't going to point that out incase it was a sensitive subject.

"I don't have any children. I'm a selach." She used the rather rude term for a hind without a mate with a hard look in her eye, but no bitterness in her tone. "Not very surprising, I would think."
"Better luck next Anlach, eh?" Whether she meant Brychan's challenge against Fell Lore or her own luck with mates was left unanswered. "Ragwort, by the way. My name is Ragwort. And you're... Brechin?"

"There is always next Anlach" he aggreed, intending not to comment about her not having a mate or children. It wasn't any of his business.. but no.. it really wasn't that surprising. With the kind of attitude she had, she could chase off most stags. She's not exactly a looker either, but that doesn't always matter.
"Its a pleasure, Ragwort.. and the name is Brychan" he corrected gently. "Forgive me for saying so, but it seems you've had a few battles of your own." He was meaning her ear which wasn't all intact. He was curious as to how it happened, but if she did not wish to speak of it, he would understand.

It was true that her attitude was a large part of the reason she had not found a mate yet. Though she wasn't the prettiest of hinds, some of the younger bucks might have stood with her this past Anlach... had she not intimidated the antlers right off them. Bunch of brailah.
"Ah, Brychan... right." Well, she'd been close at least. "I would hardly say 'battle'. It was an accident." Her right ear twitched. Clearly he had noticed the missing chunk. It was pretty hard to miss.

Those poor bucks.. probably lowered their self-esteem and confidence too. Who would want to go after females when being chased away like that? Oh well.. they would get over it surely, if they weren't too traumatized.
The stag tilted his head and quirked a brown. An accident was it? "Really.. how so? If you don't mind my asking." He saw few hinds with missing pieces of ear like she had. Most hinds were pristine and scarless... unless they'd had a run in with a predator and managed to escape with their lives. It was stags that usually had scars from battling at Anlach. Even Brychan had a few of his own this season, although mostly healed.

Ragwort tossed her head and snorted. "I do mind."
Maybe this stag was comfortable sharing everything about himself with a stranger, but Ragwort felt no compulsion to do so. It was really none of his business, anyway. He'd already had the gall to ask about her lack of calves, while boasting about his own.
(Apologies for the short, very late post. sweatdrop It's exam week and I've not really felt up to rping much.)

Well he wouldn't have asked if she hadn't rather bluntly pointed out that he hadn't asked anything about her. He knew it was none of his business... but well.. it just seemed like there was no pleasing this hind! Heh. Oh well... its not anything that Brychan would lose sleep over. He merely nodded in understanding, "Very well..." although he was at a bit of a loss of what else he could say or ask.
After a moment, he chuckled lightly, "You remind me of a hind named Telyn, somewhat. Do you know of her?" She coincedently being the mother of two of his offspring.

Telyn, Telyn... The herd was fairly large, so there were a number of Herla she knew only by sight. "The name isn't familiar. What does she look like?" Ragwort thought that another hind like herself might make good company. Anyone else who knew Ragwort would probably have thought that the meeting of the two hinds could only result in a great deal of arguing.

The stag paused as he thought about how best to describe her, a fond smile coming to his maw as he thought of her. "She's dappled gray, with blue eyes. There's a fawn and a calf with her right now, as well. Shouldn't be hard to spot." He wasn't going to point out that she was his hind at Anlach, and that the calf and fawn were his. She would probably figure that out on her own. Telyn could probably use another friend... and this Ragwort could probably use friends period... provided they didn't kill each other of course.
