I found this in the straight pride guild and I knew this would be a good place to post it. I dont really understand what they have against The Day Of Silence but here is the article I found.
AFA encourages parents to keep kids home from public schools on 'day of silence'
The Tupelo, Mississippi-based American Family Association (AFA) is warning parents across the U.S. to keep their children home from public schools on April 18, as a nationwide pro-homosexual observance takes place. That Wednesday marks this year's "Day of Silence," an event sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN; but an official with AFA says public school children should not be subjected to pro-homosexual rhetoric during the so-called Day of Silence.
For the yearly pro-homosexual observance, students in many U.S. public schools are asked to remain silent that day to express support for the homosexual agenda or to hand out pro-homosexual literature. But AFA Special Projects Director Randy Sharp is encouraging parents and concerned citizens whose community schools are taking part in the "Day of Silence" to take pro-family action in response to the event.
"What American Family Association is recommending is for, number one, parents to write their school administrator and tell them they oppose the administration giving free rein to homosexual activist groups," Sharp says. "And, number two," he adds, "we recommend that if your school is participating in the 'Day of Silence,' that you simply keep your child home from school that day."
The AFA spokesman feels the "Day of Silence" showcases a double-standard evident throughout society and many schools. "You've got two factions," he observes. "You have these who choose to remain silent to promote their agenda; and you have those who are forced to remain silent, because if they speak out against the 'Day of Silence,' they'll be labeled as homophobes, as bigots, as being intolerant."
Also, Sharp points out, those representing a pro-homosexual agenda are given tremendous access to public school students on the "Day of Silence." But if a representative of a Christian organization came to a school administrator and asked for the same privileges," the pro-family official asserts, "he or she would be denied very quickly."
Last year, more than 4,000 junior highs, high schools and colleges in America took part in the "Day of Silence," according to GLSEN. Sharp and AFA are encouraging concerned parents across the U.S. to investigate and see if their child's school district is observing the pro-homosexual event.

Tell the uber-conservative parents that it's against violence towards a repressed population, not necessarily a pro-gay event. (That was the reason my mom wanted to participate. She's very homophobic, but is against the harassment/abuse of GLBT persons.)

I just wanted to say that I hope I didnt offend anyone because I wanted to talk about how I disagree with what the article says that I feel that everyone has a right to do the day of silence but I forgot to say that so if anyone was offended or is upset by the article I apologize in advance. I just wish that people could realize that it shouldnt matter if someone is participating in the day of silence or if they support gay rights because as long as it isnt hurting anyone or isnt causing anyone to feel bad or anything like that then they shouldnt pay any attention at all.

Things like that don't make me sad, they make me angry. Until I can go through the hallways without hearing the word f** or the use of "gay" or "homo" as an insult, I'm participating and I don't care who is offended by it.

Although I must admit they have a very small point they made, I put it this way.
We have a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration day at our school. That's celebrating and honoring an often repressed group. Thus, the day of silence should be okay because it's honoring and drawing attention to an often repressed group.
And the name of the organization does piss me off. GAY PEOPLE CAN FORM FAMILIES TOO.

I agree with you completely I feel that people have every right to do the day of silence and that the guy shouldnt try to stop people from going to school just because of that because that is just redicoulus. I really do with that I knew what the day of silence was back when I was in high school back in 2001 because I would of given my support fully.

I am literally clutching at my head right now because I am so baffled at the ignorance and the hate! I mean...GAH! I seriously can't think to type right now, my mind is so angry!
Every other "day" we allow the school system to participate in, but not this one? The one with perhaps the most impact and meaning? This is just deja vu from my school where angry parents wrote in about participation in World AIDS day to our school's ACLU because they thought we were "promoting AIDS".....
I can't stand humanity sometimes...

I saw a sample letter on FSTDT earlier today about that very issue. Here's a quote from it: Quote: Allowing this disruptive Day of Silence protest to take place is completely unacceptable. I don't see how the Day of Silence is distruptive or why it shouldn't be allowed. Even though some people may be against homosexuality, all the day is asking is for people to treat other students with respect. Oh, and there's also the Day of Truth. Can parents keep their children home on that day, too?

So, people screaming the word "f*****t" in the hallways is more disruptive than complete and utter silence?
I will never understand the logic these people use. Quote: GAY PEOPLE CAN FORM FAMILIES TOO. The point of these "family rights" groups being that the "homo/bi/trans-sexual environment" is unhealthy for children.
My counterpoint being that these people have no right to -please pardon my language- b***h and hissy fit about good parents with different sexualities until they stop every heterosexual parent that abuses their kids from continuing to do so.

Hey people calm it. Yea their intolerant, but they are entitled to their opinion.
Also, what's all this bullshit about the "homosexual agenda". What agenda? Do they think we all sit around plotting to turn the world gay? Pff, we have better things to do, such as raising families.
