I'm planning on auditioning for Florida State University (hopeing to get into the musical theatre program). Does anyone have any suggestions as to monologues or music pieces that would be good to use for auditioning? Or any college audition for that matter whee

i think the most valueable thing I learned about college auditions was to walk in there and in stead of being intimidated by the professors, to walk in and show them a great preformance of your peices. Also its nice to troubleshoot possible problems like your tape not playing correctly. (happened to me I put it in on the wrong side) So deffinately go over one more time how to oporate a CD player. keep cool and have fun with it.

(btw my tape didn't play so I had to sing accapela, and after my audition the directors told me the reason they liked me was because I didn't freak out or shut down when it didn't play, go figure..)

I would like to sit in on this conversation, because I will have a similar problem in around 2 years.

The questions that most often come up after your auditon will be some mixture of the following...so get a feel of your answers...

1) Where do you see yourself in five years/ in the future? (I auditioned in three different states...trust me they ask this)

2) Do you understand how difficult this business is? Why do you want to do this? (you will feel akward answering this question, theres no way to get around it.)

3) What are your favorite roles?

4) What do you think professional behavior is?

5) have you read any books lately? (Don't answer harry potter unless you have something else too...bad idea...also don't mention any school-assigned books that your reading in english)

Its also nice to know that they want you just as bad as you want them. (And even if you don't think that's true if you can fake your psycie into believing this it helps)

College auditions are akward...roll with it.

Do they have a list of monologues they don't want to see? That are over done? I've seen some places that have one. I would check and see who your auditioning for (teacher, faculity person etc) and e-mail them and see what their guidelines are. How long does the piece have to be? Just some things to think about.

BREAK A LEG with the audition. Let us know what you decide.

I think Juldo Phdal gave you some excellent questions to think about on top of what piece your doing.

I love what HollywoodH just said...

As a general guideline I've learned that you really shouldn't preform any monlogues from neil simon in general. Also there are certain play of Christopher Durang (sometimes just anything by him) that you are asked not to preform.

Also its best not to get monologues from monologue books unless they come from plays. (FYI make sure you know about the play your monologue is from...bad mistake made by a senior a few years ago was to have a monologue but not know about the show...the director asked and they were clueless...)

Yeah, steer clear of Niel Simmon and Durang (especially Durang... a lot of people HATE HIM) and Tom Stoppard. He's hated as well by many.

If you're singing a song, try and get somethign a little less known and if the show opened within like... two years you may want to find something older. Some colleges want pre 1940s stuff too, so don't worry about that.

Juldo Phdal gave you some excellent questions to think over as well. They also usually ask why you like their program. There's also normally a point when you can ask THEM questions about their program, and it's good to ask a few because it makes you look like you're thinking.

Also, in your intro make sure you seem professional and confident. All you have is "Hello, my name is and I will be performing a selection from ." and a "Thank you." at the end to show who you are, in some cases. They may also ask you to improve. My friend was asked to do the first few lines of a Shakespear soliliquy as a rapper... hahaha.
