In the books, there is no mention of pleated skirts, ties, shirts etc. Just robes.
But the movies change that (along with alot of other things... such as magic in the holidays...)
Which is better? Robes or actual uniform? Why?
(BTW - Robes = uniform. I know. But when I say uniform try to think of the skirts and ties etc.)

The ties I agree with, maybe, but not the skirts and whatnot in the movie. Just robes is good, with a crest. The scarves and cloaks when it's cold, maybe a tie... none of this uniform stuff... better then them wearing all those bloody Muggle clothes, though.
They are wizards, they should dress like wizards.

I agree...
Scarves in the winter, and some might even wear clothes under their robes (esp. in winter)
But people like purebloods (EG. snape) probably don't. For example, Snape gets turned upside down. Wearing boxers only. So there might be a... thingy for wizards underwear... A market.

But they were evil underwear-related plotbunnies. I like the idea (this is slightly unrelated) in a fanfic I read, might have been Civil War, not sure, anyway, harry had Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans undies. *snickers* 'A Risk With Every Mouthful' Was that too dirty? I think it's funny, but maybe...? Anyway, yes, I think the Muggleborn/Halfblood kids might wear clothes under their robes, or on weekend maybe, but for the most part, yeah robes or.... do you figure there's some sort of Wizarding casual wear?

Hmm... It give me my own plot bunnies and shall keep my mind awake tonight... I'm a big fan of sort of casual robes... Or something... Like... I don't think they can wear robes ALL the time. And women should wear dresses, like... Witch women. Because, they're basically robes... But there could be some sort of casual wear... But maybe it's just robes all the time... Unrelated: I've wondered for a while, what wizards do for entertainment, besides quidditch. Because - they have a radio, but no TV's computers playstations etc. I suppose books with moving and talking pictures could replace tv? If you write those plotbunnies, I'd love to read them.

Hmmmm. That Snape's-underwear comment really makes me think about their robes, too.
But, about the uniforms. They live in a castle, obviously they like being traditional. And don't wizards wear robes all the time, anyway? The beginning of the first book, Vernon sees all those people wearing "funny cloaks." There's other examples, too. Anyway, I'm not complaing.
the directors said they wanted the kids who watch the kids who watch to "connect more" with the characters by wearing normal clothes, espacially in #3. I connect with the CHARACTERS, not their clothes....
I don't know, I just thought it was an interesting rant...

I heard, in an interview, that they wanted the characters to be comfortable-why would they be comfortable in forgien clothes?

Yes! Exactly! And Harry, if he's going to wear Muggle-clothes, they'd be Dudley's hand-me-downs. Hermione wouldn't bother dressing all preppy, and Ron's pureblood, hence he doesn't dress Muggle! That's my most-hated aspect of the movie. I don't like them, but mostly I manage, except for the bloody clothes. Argh.

Robes, robes! I prefer the robes!
The only plus about the uniforms is I like to go out and buy each piece and create my own, because you can do so much more with that (that's just for my own purposes like Halloween, book release, etc).
But still, I like the robes better. 3nodding

Well Harry always seemed to wear muggle clothes. Rowling always made a point about how he wore all of Dudley's old clothing. And Ron's mom made them all sweators for Christmas so they obviously must've had some normal clothes, in my opinion that is.

I don't remember Uniforms and such being mentioned in the books, although the ties idea is a good one. I've always thought that the students would wear their own clothes underneath their robes...

I think younger wizards wear muggle clothes when they're not in their school robes. There are a few passages that support that, including the Weasley kids getting sweaters for Christmas. Also, in OotP, in "Snape's Worst Memory," Malfoy takes away points from Gryffindor for Ron's shirt being untucked. That last one though, kinda confuses me, because I'm pretty sure that was on a school day, so I would think they would be wearing robes. It could indicate that they wear clothes underneath their robes... I don't know. There are other times that suggest that they don't (like the Snape incident). It would be nice if JKR wrote about the robes on her site, then we could have it figured out for sure.

I think that robes would be better. The students probably wear the robes over something else. Hermione probably wouldn't dress up in the tie and everything if she wanted to be comfortable. As for the Weasleys, they might wear Muggle clothing seeing as how Arthur is obsessed with Muggles, though I would have to doubt that because I think I remember reading that Arthur asked Hermione and Harry if he looked ok... Maybe the wizards have their own line of clothing besides robes...

Well, there is Gladrags in Hogsmeade, they sell socks there, at least, maybe there is a wizard-ish brand of clothing, not robes, but not Muggle either...
