It has happened. Mear months after 4kids dropped this great anime that they have butchered FUNimation has picked it up.

FUNi has One Piece.

NAMAEX'S EDIT: Funimation Confirms One Piece Dub Cast

"In an interview with animeOnline, Lance Heiskell (Marketing Director) and Justin Cook (Production Manager) have revealed that FUNimation has acquired the licensing rights to the hit Shonen Jump anime One Piece.

After discussion with Cartoon Network, the company will begin dubbing starting at episode 144 (where 4Kids' previous dub leaves off), which is currently scheduled to air this August on Cartoon Network's Toonami block. The dub will feature an entirely new cast and the original Japanese music.

Mike McFarland and Chris Bevins will be Line Producers, while John Burgmeier and Eric Vale will be doing the scripts. No voice cast was announced.

In regards to editing, Cook commented that consumption of alcohol will be edited, as well as images of smoking. The character of Sanji will still have his lollipop. The character of Smoker, however, will be unedited due to S&P regulations regarding cigars. In regards to the name changes, they will reflect the names used in Viz Media's translation of the One Piece manga.

As for DVD production, the episodes will be released in 3-disc, 13-episode boxsets at a price of $49.98 MSRP with extras planned. Preliminary plans are to release the set between November and February."

Hopefully those 13 episode DVDs are going to be redubbed and uncut versions of the first 144 episodes. Still this is great news. Great great news.

A bad dub has been saved. heart

Update wow everywhere you go there is FUNi praising. All it took for this American company to do was pick up a show 4kids ruined. Sadly soon the praising of FUNi will end and they will be bashing their One Piece dub too.

In fact come fall i expect One Piece bashing to increase because of a better dub and not decrease.

This is indeed joyous news, though it may prove to be a hollow victory for FUNimation in the long term. At least Greg Ayres and Laura Bailey will finally get to feel what their comrades in Los Angeles have to put up with on a daily basis: Loud and vehement dub-bashing.

Alcohol's still edited, and Sanji still sucks on a lollipop instead of on a cigarette. That sucks, but those sorts of things are among the least of my concerns.

Finally a savior steps in and saves a series from the evil 4-kids company. I liked One Piece a lot until 4-kids dubbed it. I am looking forward to Funimation's take on the series.

Yeah Funi can't dub the first 143 episodes for a while that sucks, and Cartoon network is still making them edit little things. However better voices, the original music, most names returning to normal and uncut DVDs really make this a good thing.

But yeah the victory is a bit hollow.

I am only a moderate One Piece fan (I basically read it because it comes in my Shonen Jump magazine) but even I am excited about this. One Piece is a show, like Naruto, that should have been a hook for new fans. As a children's show I understand editing such as removing alcohol and cigarettes, but the job 4kids did was despicable, even by their usual standards. Unlike Yugioh and Pokemon, which still managed to captivate its target audience, the One Piece dub pleased no one. The fact that it is getting another shot at life in America, when everyone believed it to be gone for good, is a pleasing sign for the American anime fandom.

Well that good to hear. I really liked One piece but the 4Kids dub just didn't do it for me. But hopefully I'll be able to get that Boxset. It would be nice.

I've never seen One Piece, or read the manga. I guess I'll try it when the FUNimation version comes out.

Wait, Greg and Laura are in it?
Has a cast been announced? I didn't think it had been, yet.

But, I'm glad that FUNi got a hold of One Piece. It'll be interesting to see how they handle a long-running series like this one. O:

I'm so glad FUNi is picking it up! I wish they had gotten the rights to it in the first place so I could watch it from the very beginning. I've only experienced a few episodes that I managed to catch and I've read a very limited amount of the manga.

Well, we all had to see that coming. About the cigarettes, that is. Shizuru's were edited out in Yu Yu Hakusho. Everyone should know, even the sub lovers, that if it's going to be aired on Toonami that it's going to be some-what edited. Atleast there will be uncut DVDs.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty pumped to see that John Burgmeier is helping to write the script. I've searched the credits various times on other FUNi titles and his name failed to show up. I thought he fell off the face of the planet. I simply adore the script for Fruits Basket that he did. I have my faith in him and Eric Vale.

This is indeed good news! blaugh Though I have been watching One Piece on Toonami, I've been really disappointed with it. So much so that although I am a firm lover of dubs, I have actually been watching the specials and movies... sweatdrop fan subbed! I always knew that Sanji's cigerettes would have to go...but hammer guns?! I'll never know what 4kids was thinking. Does anyone know when the Funi episodes will air?

Well there are like 10 4kids dubbed episodes left and Cartoon Network does not want a break in the show. So maybe a week after the final 4kids episode airs if we are lucky.

That's wonderful, I can't wait to see what they do with it!
