I am 15 weeks 3 days pregnant...how early can the mother (and dad) feel movement, and how early can you get the gender test? I am pretty sure I've felt movement (kind of a butterflies in my belly feeling) but some people are saying that it's too early. Help?

I don't really remember when you can start feeling movement. Around 5 months, but some sooner, I believe.

At first, it feels like fluttering or gas, but give it time, and soon it'll feel like something punching apart your insides. And the feeling when they turn over.. *Shudder* It's interesting, I'll tell you that much. xd

My favorite thing was that if I had an elbow or book on my belly, my son would kick it. xd He was quite the kicker.

If you mean gender by ultrasound, it's iffy. They should be able to see something, but what you have to watch out for is that if they say it's a girl, it could still really be a boy. It's hard to tell sometimes, and babies don't stay still.

If they see a p***s/testicles, it'll likely be a boy. With my son, that was all they could really get a picture of in the ultrasound. sweatdrop

biggrin Cute. So it is possible that I've felt movement then? Awesome. Thank you!

I was told that I should be able to tell the sex at about 20-ish weeks, i'm 14 weeks now, so only about 6 more weeks :]

As for movement, i'm not so sure on that one.

Actually, it varies on how fetal movement feels from woman to woman. It's very interesting the different ways women describe it, so it varies. Now, movement that OTHER people can feel, that will be much later, because it has to be more forceful. It also depends on if you're the type who is more in tune with bodily functions.

Quote:
While an ultrasound can identify fetal movement as early as 7 to 8 weeks of pregnancy, women generally don't begin to feel the baby move until sometime between 16 and 22 weeks or later, particularly if it's the woman's first pregnancy.

The initial sensations you'll notice aren't real kicks, either. Instead, some women describe the feeling as being like popcorn popping or butterflies in the stomach. If you don't feel any activity by 22 weeks, ask your doctor or midwife about it.

After a while, you'll begin to discern a pattern to your baby's movement and you'll know if something's amiss. If he's not moving as often as he usually does, your baby may be in distress. Ask your practitioner when and how to count your baby's kicks.

As for gender determining and ultrasounds. Generally (and this was a sheet I saved from my provider), they like to do the u/s between 17-20 weeks. The primary goal is not gender determination, however. It is the best time to rule out certain defects and such, but also a good time to see the developed genitals. I have a friend whose boss runs a sonography business and it's on average, easier to see boys (turtles) than girls (hamburgers). That's what the genitals look like on a sonogram to him!

Quote:
By 18 to 20 weeks, your practitioner or technician may be able to identify your baby's gender during an ultrasound. However, your baby has to cooperate! He or she has to be in a position that allows the technician to see the baby's genitals. And even if the technician gets a good view of the baby's genital area, the image may not be clear.

The more experienced the sonographer and the higher the quality of the sonogram machine, the more likely you are to get an accurate prediction. But even the best sonographers can't usually guarantee whether it's a girl or a boy.

Mind you, this is a round guideline. Also, don't be afraid to ask your doctor for pamplets, books, anything regarding these!

About finding the sex I've been told it's around the 4 month mark, I'm not sure about when you feel it moving.
