It was, 11 pm April 3rd according Richard's calculations and assumptions, not august 31st like all his clocks would be saying if she hadn't spent a half hour changing them all back. Her duplex was clean and she owed Tommy two live rabbits. She had just woken up from a nap and appearently she wasn't going to back to sleep anytime soon. Her muscles were still sore from the buzzing.
She stood infront of Dee's duplex, head clutching a bag of rare steaks she had just lifted from the cafe. She hadn't seen Dee since her change and feared that she might have gone into hide. For some reason she felt nervious, she remembered that closeness she had felt with Dee during her change and had no idea what to make of it.
She rubbed her muzzle against the doorframe once and then door. "Dee?" She called.

Dee wasn't sure what day it was, exactly, but she had figured out that it certainly wasn't August. She *did*, however, remember what day it had been during her last bender.
Happy April Fools, indeed.
It couldn't have been too long afterwards. The eggs were still intact and there weren't any imminent signs of hatching, though she was sure that the date wasn't far off.
Dee was in the process of tidying up when she heard Richard's voice. Her mane bristled and she felt her face become red with embarrassment. Despite that and the still-horrendous shape of her duplex, part of Dee craved company. (Especially after the painful encounter with Newt.)
She shuffled to the door and cracked it a few inches, then relaxed (a little) and swung it open all the way when she saw who it was. "H-hey, Richard..." she mumbled through wriggling lips, her face pulled into a tired smile.

Richard smiled when she opened her door. Her nostiles flared for a moment as Richard took in Dee's scent and the stale mixture of alcohol that drifted out of the room. She leaned against the doorframe, unwilling to step into Dee's terrority unless invited. "Hello Dee. Thought I'd check up on you. Bring you something to eat. Make sure your handling yourself okay and all that."
She looked Dee up and down while her own tail twitched randomly, she felt awkward. "You look better at least."

Dee chuckled weakly and gave Richard a 'yeah, right' expression. "You're too kind, hon, but it's good to see you." She scratched absently at the IV site on her forearm, then glanced back at her disheveled duplex. "Ahh, the place is a wreck, but please come on in." Dee took a step back and lowered her head a bit in invitation, looking out over the top of her empty glasses.
The duplex was indeed a wreck but it was still an improvement, all things considered. The dirty clothes had been piled into a singular heap, and her used bottles were bagged for delivery to Newt. It looked as if Dee was currently working on dusting and re-organizing her desk and shelves.

Richard nodded and stepped into the duplex her tail brushing against Dee's legs as she moved past her. She sat on the bed, not wanting to get too close to the dusty areas, there was a tickle in her nose already from the dust. Hopefully Dee had cleaned enough to ward off a sneezing spell.
She looked around the duplex, "Soo you've seen the lab's latest little joke eh?"

As if a switch had been flicked, Dee's demeanor turned from submissive and grateful at Richard's presence to feral anger--or, at least, as feral as her mostly-human face could manage. Her ears seemed as if they wanted to flatten against her skull, but they lacked the necessary muscles. Her mane, however, bristled again as she ground her teeth.
"Yeah, some joke," she growled softly, angling her arm towards Richard to display the IV site. There was bruising from when she had yanked it loose. "I woke up soaking wet with an IV stuck in me. Then I saw what they had done to Newt. It took me a while to figure it out... but the eggs tipped me off." Dee twitched a lip nodule towards the desk. "Same eggs, from what I can tell."
She sighed and closed the door, then opened the window wider to help air out the room. "Don't tell me they did something to you, too?"

Richard's own ears' twitched at Dee's sudden mood change, her dirtly furred tail curled. She was coming to expect Sabin's (she assumed) nasty sense of humor. It was just part of living here on the island. She prefered to think of the four injection marks as a joke, otherwise... it might mean something she didn't want to think about.
She made a calming gesture at Dee. "Its okay, nobody got hurt that I know of." She wondered what they did to Newt. "They stuck me with a needle four times in the stomach but I'll take a sick joke over something else any day." She lifted her shirt to display the iodine discoloration across her stomach. Then she followed the lip... thing to the desk. "Eggs?"

Dee shook her head in disgust as she glanced over the remains of Richard's April 1rst gift. A few moments later, she reigned in her writhing lips and nodded.
"Pigeon eggs. Newt brought them to me a while back. Apparently he had made a meal of the mother and felt guilty, the poor thing." Her expression softened as she thought of the frog, and she hoped he was doing allright. She had wanted to go after him, but thought the better of it. What if she scared him again? What if something in her snapped and she really *did* see him as prey?
"You didn't happen to see him, did you? Someone drew lines on his tummy and chest with permanent marker...made it look like a dissection prep."

Richard shook her head and fought back a smirk at the image of Newt with a dissection prep, she doubted Newt took in anything resembling good humor. "No I haven't seen him in awhile, last time I saw him he could barely string two words together. I've heard he's improved."
Richard sniffed experimentally, now that that the room was airing out. She wrinkled her nose, then grabbed a sheet corner brought it to her nose. It reeked of sweat and alcohol. She shot Dee an accusatory look. "Dee...."

Dee knew that look. Practically every authority figure in her family was well versed in 'That Look.'
She grimaced and avoided meeting Richard's eyes. "What can I tell you that your nose can't? It's been a rough few weeks." Dee tried to meet the other woman's gaze, but her line of sight drifted over to the bags of bottles instead. "It was the worst binge streak I've ever been on. I don't know what I was trying to prove. I'm still feeling shaky and dehydrated."
Dee picked up the nearest half-empty water bottle and drummed her blunt talons on the plastic. April Fools had been a wake-up call for her, but she couldn't bring herself to admit it.

The old Richard would have stayed put and just nodded, perhaps give Dee some canned grandfatherly advice. But the creature that was replacing that man wasn't given to the sidelines and staying emotionally distant. She wanted, needed to comfort her friend. She quietly stood from the couch and moved to over to where Dee stood, wrapping her arms around her before she could protest.

Dee stiffened at first, her lips pulling into tense 'points.' As she realized Richard's intent, the odd hybrid relaxed and leaned against her. She hugged back and closed her eyes.
"'Don't know what I did to deserve that, but thanks." Dee sounded embarrassed and frustrated. "I've been a Grade-A Slacker. One little mutation and I practically give up the ghost. How pathetic is that?"

"It can be difficult," Richard acknowleged as she nuzzled Dee's mane. "My tentacles grew in my first change, at first I couldn't control them at all. If I focused on anything at all they striked." She smirked a little, they can leave a nasty bruise. "My wife used to tell me, you can fall down all you want so long as you get back up."
Cathy, it seemed so long ago. Another life time. Before she had been riddled with grief, now, Richard felt a distant foundness for the firey woman. It had been the scent of alcohol on Dee's clothes and sheets that had brought her to Richard's mind. She so often stunk of it coming home from her "meetings."
Realizing she was squeezing Dee rather tightly, she eased up, allowing Dee to pull away if she desired.

Dee didn't pull away. She returned the hug, sympathetic and grateful, then leaned back. "That's good advice.
"Then you...had a pretty severe first change too, eh? And you're still doing all right." Her cheeks flushed red, nearly as bright as her lips. "Ah, so to speak." In a nervous gesture, Dee pushed her empty-frame glasses up the bridge of her nose. Despite her ever-present curiosity, she was still hesitant to dig for details of other islanders' changes.

Richard reached behind her and grabbed a tentacle to show Dee the club of the tentacle. "I got these at my first change, that was it really, some subtle things more. And I lost some weight. That was it. I was terrified of losing my back bone. In some respects the halfway point was a relief. I got to stay a mammal." Her ears drooped a bit. "Of course then there was one more surprise." She gave a depressed mew at the the end of the sentence.
"I'm still here, more or less."
