I've been toying around with the idea that Komui and the Earl are a lot alike for a while.
I assure you, this looked a hell lot better as a sketch. I can't scan, clean and color to save my life.
ZOMG somebody teach me how to at least scan my art right, please? And clean? gonk

XD; I personally ink, just so after the scan it'd be cleaner to color on the computer.
If you want to scan a pencil work (like with shading), just make sure it's really dark.
If you want a clean scan to color on the computer, you can sketch very lightly, and then make dark pencil lines where you know you want the lines, or inking is good too. =D
After it's scanned, playing around with balance/lighting/contrast can help make the lines clearer and the background more of actual white instead of the light grey that usually shows up. ^ ^

Like lan-neko said, playing around with contrast usually helps. If you have photoshop, using the poster edges filter usually makes the lines a bit cleaner and the picture will be easier to color. I love the bunny hat! whee
