Evangelism in a postmodern world.
I am an economically well-off WASP living in a world of different races, cultures, wordviews, and vocations. But all of us are in this stew of history which is radically different than what Jesus encountered in daily life. Most elementary school students today will know how to do simple multiplication but do not know what a plowshare is. Most adults in the US have never seen an untreated leper.
How does one bring Christ to the lost in a world like this? I have recognized that the individual without Christ is hopelessly lost; what's the next step? Given the context and the state of the universe as it is, I feel almost as lost as the New-Agers who come to me for help.
Sorry for my late reply here is the best answer that I can give to you. I could not really think of an answer, as I have never been asked this question so I took your question to a friend of mine who has help me quite a bit in my walk with the lord and here is his response:
In answer to your question, let me bring to your attention if I may, that although culture has certainly changed since the time frame that Jesus Christ Walked the earth, The Lord has not changed. (Hebrews 13:
cool I believe in order to bring Christ to the lost we should go about it in much the same way Jesus did. Look at His life. Look at the example he set for us in the way He lived here. As far as how do we teach the gospel, notice He taught in parables. We can teach in that same way, perhaps breaking it down in to a language that folks will understand even as Jesus did in His way, but stay with the same stories. Also one of the best ways I believe we can be effective in our witness for the Lord, is to be firmly rooted in Him our self. For example you said you are Economically well off. May sure you are generous with your goods, and remember all you have is God’s, and al your goods come from God. Have compassion on the pour and needy, and simply steward all you have in such away that it can be seen your life is not your own. That there is something different about you… . Also when I think of your question Matthew 10 verse 16 comes to my mind. I believe as you study the word of God and pray that He reveal to you it’s true meanings, He will give you an understanding of the power of God and how He can and will work through you. If you seek Him through prayerful study, if you are sincere in this, I believe the Holy Spirit will be with you, even in you. And He is working in you, and will use you in such a way that you have never been used before; to bring Him glory as you bring His good news to others. I must say I am a little concerned for you when I read that you are almost as lost as the new-agers who come to you for help. One of the keys to success is going to be that you are firmly rooted in Christ. You must know where you stand and who you stand in. But He will help you in all of these things. So be filled with the spirit and be of good courage for the work He is doing in you. (Philippians 1:6) If I can be of any more assistance, or if something I have said has left you feeling confused, or if it doesn’t make since in some way please let me know and I will try to help. Blessings on you and thank you again for your interest in the Kingdom. May God’s wisdom and peace be with you amen.
