The chirping of the birds was a gentle awakening, and Deimos felt his conscious stir from sleep. The warm body behind him was a soothing weight at his back, the steady breaths another form of relaxing comfort. It had been awhile since he had woken up next to a companion, and he wanted to enjoy this ethereal peace just a bit longer. However, questions that he had kept to the side for months now started badgering him, making him think.

He didn't want to think, and his thoughts made him wriggle unhappily. Thoughts of the past made him ache inside; thoughts of the future made a thread of fear spike through his gut, because he had always had a secret fear of the unknown. But, it was thoughts of the now that confused him.

Especially of one particular area. His past was the reason for his hate of females, but it went deeper than that. There were other males that hated females like he did, for reasons of their own. Yet those males were still physically attracted to the femmes they despised.

He wasn't. At all. Deimos held no desire for the opposite sex, and he knew that that wasn't natural. Was something wrong with him? Something he was too young to understand? And . . . and . . .

Sighing gustily, he flattened his ears against his skull and lay his head on his paws, waiting for Kekarn to wake up.

Morning tugged gently upon Kekarn's spirit - the dreams he was currently enjoying began to waver and fade. Conciousness reminded him that no, he wasn't in a dream, but was actually asleep. And if he was so concious to determine reality from dreams, it probably meant he was waking and if he wasn't . . .well. . . . he should probably at least see what time it was.

His hind paw twitched a bit, followed by a warm violet ear. Groggily opening his eyes, he stared dumbly out at the world before him. It was . . . . strange. Different. Very red, very black, and very furry. Lifting his neck, Kek got a noseful of Deimos shoulder. . .

Oh yeah~!!! Memories from the day previous hit him head on, and he remembered his new friend. The young red and white male, the one whom he had met down by the river. Deimos!

Shoving aside his grogginess, the male gave a long, drawn out yawn. Ugh. He really wasn't much of a morning wolf, but besides his aching side, he was feeling pretty. . . swell. It wasn't often he got to wake up with such a good friend. Cherish the moment, he told himself, the tip of his tail wagging in delight.

Of course, curiosity got the better of the wolf. Deimos back was turned to him, so he couldn't tell if he were awake or asleep. His ears were flattened though, which caused Kekarn a bit of concern. Maybe it was a bad dream. . .? Or perhaps he just slept funny. Whatever the case, the violet coat male rolled over, stretching his neck out over Deimos'. What was he, a goose? No. . . but he almost wished he was. It wasn't easy to see.

Pulling back his neck, finding out his neck was definitly NOT double jointed, he sighed. "Deiiiimos," he whispered, almost childishly. A little grin, and he licked the top of the red and white ones head. "Are you awake yet?" Another whisper, his nose practically touching the other males ear.

Just because he was full grown didn't mean he didn't know how to have fun. Kek was nothing more than a pup at heart.

He had gotten caught up in his own thoughts again, but suddenly he felt warm breath at his ear and the playful whisper of his name that followed. Rolling over, his tail wagging furiously, the young male licked at Kek's muzzle, nosed at his neck, then nibbled on one of his ears. He would have bit down harder like he usually did with Alexander, but he was still worried about Kek's ribs.

"How do you feel?" he asked softly, pushing his thoughts and such aside; his friend came first. "I bet you're sore. Maybe a dip in the river will do us both good. Me to get clean, and you to ice your ribs." His good paw touched the other's nose, blue eyes glinting like ice in the sunshine. "Yes?"

Kek's smile broadened as Deimos rolled over and wagged his tail. His blue-green eyes happily took in the sight of the male before him, pleased to have met such wonderful company. Violet tail thumped twice on the ground as he was greeted with a nuzzle, lick, and ear-chew.

Such good company . . . . .

A shame they'd part ways. He'd do his best to keep in touch with the red nad black furred male, but life never held guarentees. Friendships came and went, wolves drifted. The only ones that stayed together were those in packs, and even then, heirarchy changes and tension occassionally lead to wolves leaving.

But why worry about the future when he could simply enjoy the moment?

Returning the nuzzle with a lazy one of his own, he nipped playfully at Deimos' profferred paw. "I feel worse today then yesterday, but it's a good kind of pain," he reassured. It was a healing sort of pain, not an 'omg i think a rib is actually broken' sort of pain. It felt better, but was much more sore. "I think a morning soak is a most excellent plan."

Rolling to his large paws, the purple male pushed himself to his feet, if a bit a slowly. For one, his ribs were tender, but secondly . . . .he liked cuddling. He'd slept through the comforting touch of his companion, and only had these few waking moments to enjoy it.

Ah well.

One couldn't have it all, could he?

Standing fully, he gave as best a stretch he were able. Another yawn, and a small shake of his head. Eyes only on Deimos, Kek brushed past the male, turning his head to peer down at his paws. None were swollen, were they? "And the paw. . .? Feeling better too, I hope?"

Deimos studied his paws, licking the one that had hurt yesterday. "Don't really feel it anymore." Glancing up, he grinned. "Told you it wasn't that bad," he said, brushing past Kek and out of the comfortable little thicket. Kek's concern for him felt nice though.

It was than that he remembered what had assaulted him upon his waking, and his wagging tail drooped a bit. Maybe he'd ask Kek about when they got to the river.

He stretched full out, as if making up for what Kek couldn't do. There was a bite to the air, the last tendrils of winter still lingering over the forest, but he hadn't noticed the cold a bit snuggled up next to the fluffy violet male. But it would mean the river would definitely be frigid. They'd have to do something to warm up after their swim.

"You coming anytime soon?" he teased, tail wagging again.

Kek was almost envious as he watched Deimos stretch. His own muscles longed for such a motion and yet . . . . His stupid ribs. Why couldn't they just heal faster? Oh well. Maybe he'd be a bit more flexible after a polar-bear swim!

Trotting lazily behind the male, two pale blue and green eyes blinked as Deimos began to tease. A lop sided grin, and the male gave a gentle n** at Deimos' tail. "In a hurry, are we? Let a broken down old wolf like myself shuffle along," he joked, blue eyes bright with good humor. Kek wasn't exceptionally old, though he did have more experience than Deimos. One could say Kekarn was in the prime of his life, and it was true - he'd never felt better than he did now.

Perhaps it was because he'd finally accepted who he was, both inside and out. Physically, emotionally, mentally - he was at a position in his life where he knew what made him tick, and he could finally ignore what others saw or thought. Overall, he had a good life, and lately it just seemed to be getting better and better.

Except, of course, for his bruised ribs. ._.;

Despite his tease, the violet male quickly picked up his pace and playfully shouldered himself past Deimos. "Allow me," he almost challenged, tail raised tall (though not at a disgustingly dominant pose). Deimos walked strong and tall, and Kek was too relaxed to fight over who was tougher than who. As far as he were concerned, Deimos and he were on the same level. Two loners keeping each other company. In Kek's mind, there didn't always have to be a dominant and submissive.

Picking up his pace, Kek trotted through the underbrush, beelining straight to the river. He wasn't going to let any sore ribs to slow him down, not today at least. Tail wagging behind him, he glanced (almost coyly) over his shoulder at Deimos to see if the young'un was up to pace.

"I'm coming, I'm coming," the young male assured, a smile curling at the corners of his maw. However, there was a tension around his eyes, and he tried to hide the sudden limp in his walk. It wasn't his front paw, however. No.

His old wound was acting up again.

Walking beside his friend, the forest slowly awakening around them, they arrived at the river quicker than they had left it the night before. Grateful, Deimos picked up speed and plunged right in, sending water splashing in all directions. It was a freezing shock, but the cold seeped into him like a soothing balm and he let out a deep, chuffing sigh.

"Much better . . . "
PostPosted: Sun Apr 15, 2007 8:27 pm

Kek said nothing as his friend trotted beside him. But he wasn't stupid, and a wolf was brought up to be disgustingly aware of his surroundings. Deimos wasn't walking smoothe, there was . . . there was something not quite right this morning. Something that caused his friend to be off.

It wasn't his imagination, but perhaps it was just his battle bruises from the day previous. Not daring to pry, he gave Deimos neck a reassuring nuzzle before starting towards the lake.

He walked in silence, enjoying the morning unfolding before them. A gentle mist had yet to be burned away from the water, and Kekarn was pleased. Either the air was cooler than the water, or the water was much colder than the air. Considering last nights temperatures, he was quite sure it was the latter.

Still, he paused a moment to watch his friend bound crazily in to the lake. Chuckeling, the male trotted to the lakes edge and took a lazy drink. "A bit cold, is it?" He inquired, eyes bright. The water was almost frozen, at least that's how it felt upon his tongue!

Pacing up and down and the rivers edge, Kekarn decided the best way was to do as Deimos had done - run and jump. Tail wagging behind him, a giant purple wolf was soon splashing deeper in to the river.

. . . oh it was cold! But his thick fur kept the worst of the chill off his skin, and it did feel surprisingly refreshing. Eyes bright with delight, he paddeled over to Deimos, looking something akin to a bedraggeled purple rodent. He stayed deeper in the river to let his whole body soak, but was careful of the current.

Rivers were deadly, even to the best of swimmers.

"Good thinking," he murmured happily, his aches and pains feeling muuuuch better. Amazing what a thoorugh soaking could do. "Just don't drown on me," he warned, half in jest, half-serious. One just never knew. . .

Deimos swam somewhat lazily over to his friend, his hind claws digging into the gravel. He used his front feet to gently knead Kekarn's ribs, massaging them in a way. "I won't drown," he murmured, muzzle close to his chest as he balanced in the current on his hind legs. The spotted one did seem distant, his eyes focusing on some far off point in space that he really wasn't even looking at.

Was now a good time to ask? Would Kek think him weird? Would he shy away in disgust, or simply look at him as if he had lost his sanity? Of all the things that could happen, he decided, Kekarn leaving him would be the worst. It made him wary.

"Kek? Can I ask you something?" His ears flattened, and he lowered his gaze, something he rarely ever did. It only showed how uncertain he was.

The water felt nice on his ribs, the swollen muscles beginning to relax. The only thing that felt both better and worse was when Deimos began to paw at his side. The muscles were thankful, but the bruises were not.

Oh well.

Kek didn't shrug him off or snarl, he enjoyed it. Boy oh boy was he getting spoiled~! First a new friend, then a warm body to snuggle, and now a morning swim and massage! Who would have thought stepping on sore muscles relieved the tension? Kek never would have thought of it, but he was surely pleased Dimos had.

His pleasure lasted only a moment though, before he read the body language of his friend. Ears and eyes down, there was something most certainly wrong. Deimos had seemed . . . off . . this morning. Well, compared to yesterday, he wasn't nearly as active or as close to laughter. Yes, Deimos was much more subdued. . .

"You can ask me anything," he replied, studying his friend. A hint of concern lighted his blue-green eyes, still treading water and fighting the current. A small whine broke through before he offered Deimos a slightly soggy nuzzle. "What's on your mind?"

Deimos didn't know how to begin, his ears belying his unease. They kept going forward and back, as if he wanted to start saying something, but thought better of it. Finally, he sighed, telling Kek everything from his lack of interest in females to the dreams he had been having lately of Alexander and other males.

All of the words came out somewhat rushed, yet with many pauses in between, showing how scattered the whole thing made him feel. That, and he was afraid. Afraid that Kek would abandon him, or worse, find Ander and tell the navy wolf that Deimos had been dreaming about him.

Focusing his sole attention on his paws as they gently kneaded Kek's ribs, Deimos lay his ears so close to his skull they nearly disappeared.

Kek waited patiently, unsure about what was worrying the black, white and red male before. Whatever he had to say couldn't be that bad, could it? What was haunting the poor male so. . .? What was such a burden he could hardly speak?

Waiting in the water, he didn't push Deimos to speak, but allowed the male to take as much time in the world as he needed to explain. Of course, Kekarn had no idea what was bothering Deimos, so when the male finally began to speak . . . .

there it was.

Never would Kek have fathomed that the red and white male was troubled by such thoughts. As he listened, ears pricked intently, green-eyes resting gently on Deimos, the violet wolf was floored. What good fortune~! And there was no selfish flirtation involved in the stray thought, merely relief that Deimos had picked him to talk to! Out of all the wolves in the forest, the chances that they were two of a kind was rare. How often had Kek read the wrong signals or opened up to a 'friend' only to find himself humiliated?

Oh, the relief Kek felt at knowing that he understood Deimos, that he could help him and not cause the red and white male to go through the hell he had. It wasn't easy sorting through such confusing and conflicting emotions, feelings, thoughts, desires. . . .

But at least the male wasn't alone.

Kekarn said nothing for a moment, making sure Deimos had spoken his peace. Now . . . how to respond?

"First off, Deimos, thank you for trusting me so. . . I know it's not easy to talk about such thoughts, such feelings but," he smiled gently at him, green-blue eyes soft. "I know what you're going through. I have and still have those same thoughts and feelings. I'm a wee bit different then most wolves in that I don't pick females for mates, but males. I've never been interested in them save potential friends."

Part of Kek felt relief admitting his secret. "It is a secret we both share." Given, there was the potential he might very well have no preference towards gender; Kek had fooled around with a girl or two just to experiment when he was younger, an attempt to act as how he thought he should. But no, there was nothing there - he held absolutely no interest in them save friendship.

"But please, let me tell you from one wolf whose gone through hell and back - don't ever think you're different or wrong or unnatural." There was a vehemence in his voice, the typically laid back male speaking words full of passion and knowledge. He knew what it was like to not have any to talk to, to think one was wrong or broken. "I'll admit, it's not an easy road to travel and "friends" may . . . they may leave you when and if they find out. It's not fun, and one finds out quickly who their true companions are. But trust me, it's even more miserable pretending to be someone you're not." Was that a smidge of regret in his voice? Pehraps.

But then, Kek had his share of regrets and sorrows, his share of loves and losses.

Cream-tipped ears flattened a bit upon his own head, not out of fear, but concern. Another small whine as he looked at his new friend, hoping to encourage him to feel a bit better.

Kek was like him?

It was the first thing that latched into Deimos' brain, and it made the aching tightness of fear in his chest not only lessen, but disappear.

He wasn't alone! Tail wagging as fast as possible under the water, the spotted male listened to his friend share his own secrets, their similarities. And when Kek was done, Deimos jumped on him, small whines escaping his jaws, his tongue flashing out to lick at Kek's face.

The Fates had been his friend this day; of all the wolves he could have opened up to, Kek had been the one. Kek, who knew exactly what he was going through.

Suddenly, he grew embarrassed and would have blushed if he wasn't so cold. "So . . . than I wasn't the only one . . . who enjoyed last nights cuddle . . . ?"
PostPosted: Wed Apr 18, 2007 9:28 pm

Kek had hoped that Deimos would take his words to heart - he didn't want to seem overbearing or conceited - he didn't want the other male to believe that because of experience he was telling the other what to - or not - do.

That wasn't the case at all! He just . . . he just really wanted to let Deimos know that he wasn't alone with such a burden, such a weight. Small handful that they were, it did wonders to know there was someone out there who understood.

And Kekarn didn't want his new friend to face the humiliation and unpleasantries if he could avoid them. He couldn't protect him forever, no, but . . . at least he could try.

Of course, hoping that the red and white male wasn't scared or unsure, Kekarn ahd leaned forward. . . only to suddenly get pounced! Surprised, the male had time to start a smile when he sunk . . . oops. He forgot to paddle!

Pushing himself back to the surface, still getting bombared with whines and licks, Kekarn allowed himself a genuine laugh. It was good natured, it was friendly, it was light. A relief had replaced his secret, his tension that came from such a secret. Here was one wolf he could be himself around, a wolf he needn't fear or tread carefully around.

What a day indeed!

His laughter turned in to a low, rumbling chuckel that resonated deep in his throat. Cool-hued eyes focused on Deimos as he flicked his ears, a small, almost innocent smile crossing his features. "I must admit, my friend, I didn't just enjoy it. . . I cherished it. It was quite pleasant. . . " What an understatment!

But, Kekarn had his shy streak too. Deimos was still a friend, and though they knew each others deep, dark secrets, Kekarn didn't want to scare him away!

Leaning forward, he gave his friend a nuzzle on the neck before playfully taking hold of his scruff. A little tug before letting go, and he swam past him closer to shore. "I don't know about you but I'm feeling a bit water-logged." Brushing past him, he pulled himself to shore, quite ready to shake himself out and relax for a bit.

Buoyed by Kek's understanding and the thought that they now shared a deep, common bond, Deimos lunged through the water, barreling past the purple wolf and onto shore in a flash, flinging the water from his pelt with a vigorous shake of his body.

The sun was only bit higher in the sky, yet the temperature was steadily increasing, hinting at a nice, warm day. Seeing as he was shivering and dripping, warmth sounded nice, but at least most of his aches were either numb or gone.

Thinking about their tumble the night before, Deimos thought that the hill would be a good place to stretch out in the rising sun, soaking up its warmth. He turned and trotted over to Kek, returning the scruff grabbing before nuzzling the purple male.

"Shall we go warm up?" he questioned, only realizing after the words left his mouth that his question could be taken many different ways. The realization made him grin broadly, tail wagging. XD
