In an attempt to better the community and keep people posting, I submit this to you: Today (yesterday, really, but I didn't listen to the CD until today) I have a discovered a vastly under-rated composer. No one here has mentioned him, nor have I EVER seen him mentioned until today, so I must say this man deserves some credit. However, I am guilty too. The only reason I ended up finding out about him was by accident (I picked up a double disc CD set at Barnes & Noble while in San Antonio thinking it was Mahler's second & fourth symphony, while the fourth was actually this work). This composer is Franz Schmidt. He was influenced by Mahler, and actually performed under him in at the Vienna opera (on cello). He also helped Schoenberg gain recognition, yet he himself never got the recognition he deserved. (There are apparently only
eight recordings of his fourth symphony.) He also led a tragic life which leads to this symphony being rather bleak.
This symphony (no. 4 in C major) is beautifully bleak, a wonderful dark piece. I highly reccomend that the people here check it out.
As an added bonus, those from the guild can download it for free for the next seven days. If you want to recruit people, try mentioning this to sweeten the deal >_>
