Sister Kismet

PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2007 1:38 pm

Dozing in one of the plastic chairs, Kismet prepared psychologically for the day by ignoring it completely.
It was sunny out, a somewhat rare occurance as of late, and Kismet had completely forgotten about the arrival of her first student at the Musaem, although the sharpies and notes littered about the rooftop classroom suggested she had been preparing previously. The large blue tarp rippled slightly above her, as a breeze blew in, both waking the Alamancer and blowing her notes off of the buliding and into the courtyard below.

"Crap!" Kismet scrambled to her feet, struggling to collect the bits of paper before they blew away. Still half asleep, she didn't even think to try and stop the wind, and soon her agitation had turned the light breeze into a fierce wind that made the tarp flap above her. As she grabbed for her grocery list (How did that get in the pile?) she looked down and froze, the wind slowing as she paused her movement. Oh. The new student, how could she forget?
Glancing over at her chart, next to an orange poster (There's no "Me" in Magic!) she checked the name. Nathaniel. Huh.

Sighing heavily, she gathered up as much of the mess as she could, shoving it into a corner, before drawing up the rope ladder. The first test, as always then. Let's see what he came up with.

Nate sighed as he wandered about the Musaeum, trying to figure out just where his class was supposed to be. He'd gotten some rather vague directions and, after finding a couple of dead ends, had finally stepped out into the courtyard. Okay, so his class was supposed to be close to here. In fact, he'd been told he'd be able to see the classroom from here.

The young scroll child looked around, not finding anything that resembled a classroom within view. Suddenly, the wind picked up and a piece of paper drifted down from above, catching Nathaniel's attention. He glanced up, wondering where that piece of paper had come from.

A large banner flapping in the breeze told the boy that he'd found his classroom. Nate stared up at it for several long moments. How on earth was he supposed to get up there?

The boy walked over closer, hoping he'd just missed sight of a ladder or some stairs off to the side or something else that would help him get up there. It might've been a good thing that Kismet had pulled up the rope ladder. Otherwise, Nate might've burned it into small pieces of charred rope. Not intentionally, of course.

Kismet lay down on the rooftop, head poking over the side.
"Hey, come on up! I've been waiting for you!" Not strictly true of course, but a little pressure never hurt.
Luckily for Kismet the rooftop was far enough away from Nate to not burn her face off, but with the sun out and the wind once again calmed she didn't notice the uncommonly warm patch she was in.

If it took too long form him to figure out a way up, she might let down the ladder again. She'd had that happen once, a little girl who could turn invisible just sat down and cried. Bad karma for weeks, that one.

Kismet sighed, trying to shoo away past guilt. They hadn't told her what this kid did, but she was sure it'd be hilarious to see his attempts to ascend the building. Not that she was doing this for her amusement-- of course not, no, well partially, but she had a lesson plan built around it, depending on what route they took.

Nate looked up as the teacher called from the rooftop, frowning. How was he supposed to get up there? It wasn't like he could fly or anything. Even if the boy had thought about it, there wasn't exactly a way that radiating heat could get him up there. Well, unless he burned the building down, but then Nara wouldn't be happy about that.

Nathaniel was still wearing the fireman's outfit that Nara had dug out for him. Talner had taken to washing it every day, waiting for the boy to attend this class so that he wouldn't burn up everything in the house and his clothing.

Perhaps there were hidden handholds in the walls? Nate moved even closer to see if there were. He wasn't holding his breath on it, though.

Kismet glanced at her watch and sighed. They needed to get on with it.
"Hey kid, what can you do? There aren't any steps, if that's what you're wondering."
Maybe she could help him out somehow. Depended on what he could do, though.

((Warm air rises. =D))

Nate frowned as the teacher piped up. "Uh... I..." Why couldn't he remember that long word that Nara had used to describe what he did? "I make things hot..." That was close enough to what he did. Really, he made himself hot, but he was a thing, right? So how could that help him out?

"Crap!" Kismet slapped her forehead. Stupidstupidstupid. This one would be hard to work out, and it wasn't like she could just back down now, right? That would seem stupid.

"How hot can you make yourself? Like just minorly or like superheating things?"

Nate thought for a moment. "Uh... hot enough to burn my clothes... and to hurt my daddy's hand..." He answered, wondering how that would help him out.

((Eeep. Sorry, been busy lately...))

((That's okay, I've been too. D: Sorry.))

"Oh. Erm...'Kay." Wow, she'd screwed this one up bad. She really had to stop assuming things just worked. "Try to make yourself really really hot. If you can, okay kid?"

Maybe he could melt a hole into the wall or something. The siding was plywood though, she was even sure what plywood was made of. Fairly certain wood, but maybe plastic?

Building materials were never her strong suit. Oh well, if it just caught on fire she'd have an excuse to end this portion of the lesson, and move on, right?

On the other hand, if she could work something out...could she float him up? No, too heavy, even if warm air was less dense than cold. Maybe she could make a hurricane? Too tired, too much energy. Or she could let the ladder down.

((Eeeeep.... ^^"))

"Uh... okay... I can try..." Nate really hadn't figured out just how to control it, but maybe if he just thought really hard about it.... it would work? He closed his eyes and tried thinking about making himself really, really hot...
