Fenris had gotten a good yelling-at from his mother earlier in the day. She sure was quick to anger, but she calmed down soon after she saw her little green son recoil as much as he had. Fenris had recently taken to wandering far far from home, an idea Sukari didn't take too kindly to, and Fen couldn't understand why.

Today, then, he decided he'd stay closer to home. He was in search of someone mysterious... yet someone who lived with them every day. It was a big red thing, but he didn't know what it was. It seemed nice enough, but mommy didn't like it. Fenris just couldn't wrap his mind around why not... It always brought food and gave it up without a fight. He had to find "whelp." Fenris didn't understand that not only was it a belittling name, but also not Ryega's real name.

His eye caught sight of the red thing in the distance, and he immediately headed after it, making sure mommy wasn't in sight. She'd be even madder at him if she knew he was going to talk to whelp- she'd told him never to talk to it. He just had to find out what it was.

Ryega laid upon the border, just the furthest outskirts of Sukari's territory. He tricked himself into thinking that as long as he was out here, away from her, she could not hurt him and that he could just run away. Jani had not quite gotten his land legs at least to his knowledge and Sukari has he cubs to look after. But right now... he needed rest. For such a long time he had not slept. Ryega was starting to develop bags under his eyes, at least out here, it was sort of quiet and a decent place to rest some.

The red Mpinzani dog laid down in a sprawled sort of position, making himself comfortable. The sun was beating down and clinging to his deep red fur, making him murr rather happy to himself as he waited for his sleep to take him away.

"Dad..... Mom.... Poki... Demani.... Gazi.... Jahe.... G....Gizo...."

He murmured, whispering the names of his family member, vaguely remembering the last one, the only female aside from his mother. It had been too long.... too long to remember now. He had almost forgotten their faces, but hopefully, their scents were strong enough to refresh his memory... that is if he can find them again.

"Stupid wrench...."

"Hey Whelp!" Fenris said cheerily as he approached the dog. He wasn't sure what to expect, so he stayed a little ways away from it as he approached. He wasn't sure what Ryega would do, and didn't really understand the dog. "I know we don't talk much," Fenris continued, not giving Ryega a chance to respond to his greeting, "But I thought maybe we could be friends, and we could get to know each other."

Fenris would have felt pity for the furball in front of him if he knew the pain Ryega was going through. However, the worst pain Fenris had experienced in his whole life thus far was getting a thorn in the paw.

The little cub sat down quite ungracefully and awaited Ryega's response. He was ready to bolt should the dog become violent, but Fen didn't think he would.

Ryega sighed. Sleep will have to wait. He rolled up and raised up into a sitting position. With a head rub, he yawned out and looked toward Fenris. His scent was the strongest of all the siblings, Ryega had smelt this one more often then the rest when he had to talk to Sukari while the cubs were asleep. He sighed and tried his best to smile.

"Fenris.... what is it that you want? Being friends with me will only make your mother worried and possibly harm your father somehow."

With a sigh, he turned his head away from him.

"If you want to know more about me, ask your mother. I am sure she wouldn't hesitate to fill your head with lies about me that would fit her dominance over me. If you want to know the truth, then you can't have it. I don't know if I can even trust you yet."

With a growl, he glanced back at him.

"So what do you say now?"

That's an awful lotta big words... Fenris thought to himself. He didn't catch some of the message, but got the main point. He wondered, though, how knowing this thing could harm his father... Maybe "the Whelp" knew more than Fenris did about his family.

"Well... I dunno," Fenris said, folding his ears back. Why was this guy so negative? Maybe mom raised him too.

"Mom never tells me anything about you," he said finally, a touch of regret in the cub's voice. He cast his eyes to the ground. "She always seems mad at you, but she seems mad at most everyone." Fenris couldn't figure her out, either. She was nice to dad and his brothers, but mean to everyone else! He was glad he was spared her wrath, but... why was it she was so angry all the time?

"So I thought," he said, getting his mind back on track, "that if I wanted to know anything about you, I'd have to ask you." He finished, looking back towards the towering figure before him.

Ryega scoffed and growled.

"Ryega...."

He murmured.

"From the Mpinzani pack, son of Jamaa and Temari. Taken from my father by your mother. Forced to do things for her because you know what, your mother is a lazy good for nothing. That tell you enough me? Oh wait, don't forget the fact that I cannot see anything. I only know that it is you by your scent."

With another rough scoff, he plopped himself down again. Ever since he was taken, he had gotten a lot more bitter and just angry with everything.... was he becoming like Sukari? No, it can't be.... maybe? Her influence was affecting him, it was clear now but what could he do? Everything she did set him off at times, he only gave up the things he did; eat, sleep, etc. just to please her and in hopes that he could escape this place. But this cub.... the freak cub of Jani, a cheetah, and Sukari, a lioness. Fenris.... he had done nothing to him and yet he was being like his mother....

"Look, I'll be your friend but.... just don't tell anyone about this. I am just "watching" over you so you don't go too far. Your mother will have my hide if you left the area..."

Fenris lowered his body more and more as he silently listened to Ryega's tale. My mother? My mother? He'd keep it secret, but he was horrified to hear what he heard. He didn't know why she'd take someone's pup, let alone force him to work.

However, his mood lightened when he heard that they could be friends. "That's wonderful!" He said delighted. He hopped right over the majority of Ryega to be near his face, even though he couldn't see. "I won't tell mom, I promise!" He said gleefully, tail twitching.

"Good, anything else you want while you are out here?"

He said in a rather irritated tone. He had given Fenris what he wanted, his history and his friendship. What else did he want? With a sigh, he looked in his direction. He cocked a brow and smirked.

"Well?"

"Well Ryega... Thank you," He said. Fen knew that Ryega would know what he meant. This new knowledge of his he didn't entirely comprehend, but... This changed his views a bit.

"You look tired," he stated, unaware that Ryega probably knew that. "Have you ever had a friend before?" He asked, cocking his head. If he had, it seemed like it would have been a long time ago. Fenris wasn't sure how to interpret his shortness- so like his mother. It was a trait he wished he could change, but knew he could do nothing about it but wait for them to grow out of it.

"My brother.... my little brother was the only one I was ever close either, aside from the rest of my family. But my brother was the closest. What about you? Or does your mom not let you have any?"

Ryega was beginning to curl up a bit, his tail covering his paws and his head upon his forpaws like a pillow. Not really needing to look at Fenris, his scent was all he needed to have to know where he was, his voice just made sure that he was still interested in talking with him. Fenris seemed to be a lot different than his mother... to say the least.

"And I am tired. Your mother works me like a dog. Pun not intended."

"My mom's not nice, is she?" He asked. "She'd let me have friends, I'm sure, but everyone I meet thinks I'm weird. Tell me the truth, Ryega, am I a fluke? Have you ever met any other cheetons? Most don't talk to me after they find out what I am, and we move away from the ones who accept me."

Ryega would know. He seemed smart, even if mom said he wasn't. He'd know if Fen and his litter were the only cheetons on the savannah. He'd let Ryega sleep after this, but he had to know. His "cheeton quest" was Fenris' latest goal.

"To be honest, I have never left the Mpinzani Pack Lands unless I was with my father and that was rare. My father treated me like a weakling because I cannot see. But you can see that I am fine, with my disability. I know where you are and I can tell you what you are doing too. I am fine. But... I never got to really experience things outside of my pack's lands. The only species other than my own would be my brother, a hyena. Don't ask how, it's complicated. But once I get out of here.... I could possibly find some."

He gave a shrug and just watched him. What was he up to? What does species have to do with friends? He had a brother that was a hyena. That is on a family level.

"But do you think I'm a fluke? Never supposed to be?" He pressed. That was what had been burning him ever since he had been trying to make friends in the savannah. They were lions, and he was... some creature. He knew what he was, but many of those he'd met frowned on him.

He wondered if deep down Ryega frowned on him too. He certainly hoped not.

On the other paw, he found Ryega's ability to find his way around without his vision astounding. He wished he could do that. Imagine how strong Ryega would be with his eyesight!

"You're leaving?" Fenris asked desperately. He'd already grown fond of Ryega. He didn't want his only friend leaving him too. Oh, mom would be even madder at him. Fenris would have to keep this even more secret than he had initially thought.

“A fluke? What would you consider a fluke? I am a blind lone dog, away from my pack, and treated like some mentally disabled fool. You are just a creation of interspecies relationship. Nothing more, so knocks it off. You are normal… at least in my eyes.”

Ryega huffed a bit and licked his nose; the dryness was getting a bit bothersome. He sometimes wished he had his eyesight, just so he could see his family. He didn’t care if he could not keep it, just for a moment… to see his family just once and not the mental blobs that he had created from their touch, their smell, their voices… but that is a dream.

“Hah, you think I’d stay here? I want to go back to my family. If I am able to get back to where my father had taken me before, I could find his scent and follow it back to the pack. I am not gonna stay here and let your stupid mother kick me around like a useless pup. I can hunt, I can do anything she can, I am not useless and I don’t want to be treated like a slave. When the time’s right, I am leaving if she likes it or not.”

Fenris didn't know how to respond to the wild dog. His words meant the world to Fenris, and fresh hope was born in his heart.

"Maybe I could help you, when the day comes," Fenris said. He didn't like how mom treated Ryega, it was mean and pointless. "I could hold her off... and if something goes wrong on my end, I can outrun her," Fenris explained. He loved that fact. Even as a cub, he could outrun her, only slightly.
