Bennu couldn't believe she was doing this. He hadn't advertised that he was looking for help, and most potential employers were leery about how she appeared anyways. She took a deep breath as she climbed the hill to Mooncakes Bakery. Nakia was at school (and would still be there for another few hours unless she played hooky, which would end in Bennu giving the dark girl a scolding), so she didn't need to worry about the fire department calling her again. Bennu had a folder with her resumes tucked under one arm while she smoothed out her black slacks. She was determined to make a good impression if she was going to do this. She reached the top of the hill, and adjusted her white blouse, tucking a loose end back into her slacks. Her blue-violet hair was gathered into a tight bun at the back of her head, and what had escaped earlier in the day back there was tightly braided.
She took one last deep breath to compose herself and walked into the bakery, smile on her face and looking very professional, a far cry from the t-shirt and shorts/jeans or gothic attire she was normally seen in when she visited the bakery.

As it was, it was not Audley who greeted her but Annette. And it took even Annette a few moments to recognize her. Was that...? The girl, dictionary definition of the word "pink", stared from behind the counter at who she thought to be a stranger before she let out a squeak. There was little else Annette was capable of saying, anyways. Squeak squeak. She ran into the back of the store quickly and emerged with Audley by the hand.
"Hello— Oh!" And he was surprised too. "Miss Bennu?"
Wearing a white shirt, tucked in and neat? Was this some sort of conspiracy? The look on his face as he came to the front of the counter was priceless. "I- I'm sorry. I did not recognize you," he admitted. Maybe something terrible had happened? He hoped not, but Audley couldn't imagine why else she'd change from her usual style of dress – he was fond of it, actually – into something so tame. But she was smiling so he concluded some great calamity was unlikely.
A little late, but at least out of shock, the young man returned her smile at last. "What can I do for you?"

The girl had waved at Annette before she ran to get Audley, then waited patiently. She still thought Annette was one of the cutest little girls she had ever seen! Reminded her of some strawberry confection. When Audley came out and said he hadn't recognized her, she mentally stomped on her urge to panic. She expected people to not really recognize her...after all, seeing Bennu in anything tame was extremely rare. She just chuckled slightly.
"That's okay. I had almost forgotten I had this outfit." Keep calm, the worst he can do is say no. She took a deep breath, and got right to the point. No sense in causing her emotional state more stress. "I actually came to see if you were hiring, Audley. I know you haven't advertised as such or anything like that, but it never hurts to ask, ne?"

Audley looked a little in shock. As if it had never occurred to him that in most businesses one person didn't do all the work constantly. Was he hiring? Now that she'd asked the question, he didn't really know. The dark circles under his eyes, midnight paperwork he couldn’t complete during the daytime, told him he should. He supposed...
"Well now," he started hesitantly, "I'm not... formally. But there is a lot of work to be done around here and I could use another pair of hands. Annette, you know..." He stopped himself again since the child in question was present as well, shuffling her feet nervously as if a mirror to Audley's awkwardness. Being mute, she wasn't exactly the ideal worker.
"Bennu, I wouldn't mind having you around. Thing is, I couldn't really pay you all that much. As it is Annette and I have to cut a few corners every now and then. But maybe things will change." He offered her an optimist's smile. Hopefully. "If you've already got a job, I don't know if it'd be worth leaving for this."

"No worries. I know you're still small and all, so you needn't worry about paying me much." I've got enough squirreled away to help stretch things. "And to be honest...I don't have a job at the moment." Bennu smiled. "So I wouldn't be leaving anything. And besides...I like it here. Wouldn't be very nice if you ended up going out of business." So far, so good. She made sure not to get all giddy yet though.
She gave a reassuring smile to Annette. The girl may have been mute, but she was adorable, and that helped to draw some customers in, as far as Bennu had seen. She shifted her feet a bit, trying to keep her nervous streak under control.

"Well, alright then." Ehehehe, nervous chuckle. "I guess a small job is better than no job... Um, I'll draw up the necessary paperwork then. When do you think you can start?"
Sort of a silly question, since the girl had just said she didn't have another job to leave behind. But hey! Maybe she was obligated to other things? How should he know? He could risk sounding like an idiot, it was better than acting like she had nothing to do with her life. Bennu was in school, after all. That took up a lot of time.
"And I don't really know what your schedule is quite like... I guess we'll work that out and stuff, err..."

[OOC: Dat's okay. RL takes priority. And brain-dead days are inevitable.]
Bennu chuckled. "I can start as soon as you need me to. I'm free most of the day, except from six AM to eleven AM, and uh...Oh dear." She smiled a bit more nervously now. "I'm a bit flexible when it comes to hours, really. Most of my jobs were through my mother or her friends, and since a lot of it dealt with catering, the hours were a bit unpredictable."
She looked to her clothes, then back up. "Also...is there any dress code for me to follow, other than the 'hair pulled back' food safety requirement?" The goth did NOT want to end up wearing the wrong thing to work. The last time she'd done that, she'd gotten docked pay by her own mother! Was not fun.

Maximum awkwardosity now. Sure, Audley himself dressed down for work (most working people seemed to be afraid of anything "weird") but he felt unnatural telling someone else to dress in one way or another. He had never really been an authority figure in anyone's life before. At all. Come to think of it, wasn't that what he spent his youth rambling and groaning about? Heh, oh, his youth. He was prone to forgetting he was pretty damn old now. Or at least not young enough to be allowed to flounder in indecision.
"Um, as long as it's something easy to move around in and not too outrageous, I can't say I'd mind you dressing any differently than normal. You know how people are; chains and stuff... sort of freak them out. But black is always in. They won’t think anything of you if you're monochrome." Haha. Bad joke attempt. Laugh laugh laugh. Or.... not... Awkward.
"Annette gets away with a lot, anyways, nobody seems to mind her strange fashion." Audley received a critical look from the girl clinging to his waist. 'But I'm cute,' she seemed to say.
"If you could, I'd love for you to maybe work weekends? We're busiest then around noontime because people off work come in for late breakfast... But I understand that you're also in school, and weekends are sort of sacred. Really, I could use help any time during the week."

Bennu knew it was a bad attempt at a joke. But...It was kind of funny and true. Many other goths she knew didn't have the colors she had in her wardrobe. Oh sure, she had plenty of black, but she also had deeper, rich colors. She nodded.
"Alrighty! I'll do my best to fit in with the normal crowd!" Cue her own bad joke attempt. She had to agree with the atmosphere...this was a bit awkward. She had good reason to giggle at Annette though. The girl's expression was right. She WAS cute. And adorable and...wait...there seemed to be a lot of kids like that around lately...She'd have to inquire about that at some point. But for now, she was happy she just had a job!
"Ah! I don't mind. Weekends are perfectly fine. I'd rather be useful on a weekend than sitting on my butt staring at the ceiling. That was always the part that drove me nuts about high school..."

“Oh, um, that’s great then!”
He’d have to make some changes to the paperwork. It was a relief, to know he might get a bit of a break. He’d at least have more time to go over the taxes and the other paperwork with someone watching the front. And more time to make the desserts... He wouldn’t have to get up at an ungodly hour to make sure the batches for the next day were getting done, although Annette had been helping him with that on account of his feeling poorly. Maybe he could teach Bennu a little bit about baking, too. Or maybe she already knew, due to her experience with catering? Well... No, what was he thinking? The poor girl didn’t sign up to be his pastry slave.
“When do you think you can start? Next weekend? Or...”
Sometime about then, he hoped.
[ ooc :: lolcakes. I is lazy, so I'm posting off my Silencieux account. xDD;; ....
Having never applied for a job myself, I have absolutely no idea what the process is or what I'm writing. xD! Anyways, should we wrap this up? There's not much more to do now that she has the job. ]

[OOC: That's okay. Hiring policies are generally different everywhere you go. And wrapping up is good.]
Bennu nodded, relief that she'd gotten a job finally washing over her. "Next weekend sounds fine. I look forward to working with you and Annette!" She reminded herself to keep her giddiness under control; that she could be giddy as a newcomer to Belgian chocolate AFTER she got home. It was hard, but she managed to keep a mostly calm person. Mostly.

[ ooc:: Short is fine. xD We’re wrapping up anyways. ]
“Great!” He beamed nearly as much as she felt like doing herself. She seemed happy. He was glad it pleased her so much. Although it had been – or at least felt like - long ago, Audley remembered the uneasiness of having no employment. The wonder and checking and thinking, would there be enough for next month’s bills? Next weeks? He had been lucky, very lucky, to have something to fall back on during those times. But now most of that had been used to obtain the shop and refurbish it. Audley was walking a thin line with little safety net under him these days. He’d managed to keep his balance so far.
Despite having stuck it out like a good girl as long as she could, Annette seemed to be growing impatient now. She wandered off uninterested, scuffing her shoes and squeaking along on the floor as if a summons to Audley to get it over with.
“So. Um. Handshake!” He offered his hand in a spontaneous but well-meaning gesture. “I hope you find this experience enjoyable, if nothing else.”
Although she liked Bennu, Annette wished he wouldn’t smile so much at another girl.

Bennu took his hand with her own and shook it a bit.
"I'm sure I will! It will be a pleasure working with you and Annette!" Speaking of the girl, she seemed to have wandered off...but Bennu paid it no mind. Every kid had their limits, as far as she knew. And as another strange herald to say their time for now was up, the cell phone her mother grudgingly kept up rang, with Nakia's school as the caller. "It would seem I have to go now..." On a much quieter note, once she'd gotten her hand back and was answering the phone, she mumbled something along the lines of 'What did she do now...'
