Deadwood park was just as it's name suggested.

The large area was filled with dead and dying trees, dead grass, and withering plants. There were also living bright green trees and other greenery and they crowded around the banks of a chuckling brook. Over the brook was a idge and upon that bridge was a crippled boy and a floating minty green torso.

"Eiry, stay close to me alright?" said the young boy, trying his best to keep up with his raevan, "We've never been here before...It does look like your sort of place to feed off of, though, instead of letting my poor garden die. Eiry? Did you hear me?"

The young frei quirked an ear to listen at the last words of his master and he said offhandedly, "What?"

Isi sighed and hobbled to a stop on the bridge as he watched Eiry float over the bushes at the end and inspect a tree with curiousity.

Julian Sweet had always been a fairly reclusive young man. Even as a child, his projects required complete isolation from others, including his parents and other assorted relatives. Work was not always his prerogative, but everything he did was done in a professional manner. Whether he was exercising that strange solemn behavior a kid can have towards such activities as saving worms from total annihilation after it rains, or acting as an adult rightly should when he grew to such an age, there was never anything silly or comfortably awkward about Julian. Everything in his life was so precise one could easily imagine that even tragic events that effected him were strategically planned.

Yet, one day, he found himself quite unhappily facing the very surprising fact that he was in the actual position of being someone's father figure. Throughout all of Gage's relatively short existence, the scientist had attempted to treat him as a very precious experiment. Now, though, as the radioactive Frei began taking a turn for the rebellious, his guardian was left up a creek without even a papier-mâché paddle. When, exactly, had Gage decided he possessed the right to act like a teenager, particularly the type Julian loathed above all others?

In plainer words, the Raevan- minus copious amounts of eyeliner- had become relatively... emo. It was a phase, Julian assured himself, but an unwanted one all the same. There were books with poetry, carefully and very much dead pressed flowers, and even black articles of clothing Gage could not even wear laying around the apartment proving something had come over him. Julian, for one, was doing what any even semi-all right father would have done in such a position. He was very calmly, very fairly pretending the situation did not exist.

Furthermore, as he sat on the bench in Deadwood Park, Julian simply repeated to himself over and over again that soon his charge would come to his senses. In the meantime, he read that weekend's newspaper by the light of a nearby lamppost.

Gage, on the other hand, was currently killing some bushes and pondering if a finely tuned ear could perhaps have heard every bud's miniscule dying screams as its energy transferred into his body. Later, he might just write a sonnet about it. The point, naturally, was not to actually enjoy acting more depressed than he usually did. The strange, highly unlike him idea was to drive Julian crazy. Frankly, he blamed his actions on ideas his one-maybe-more-times babysitter had instilled within him, but secretly it might have been a hidden desire within him since Julian had purposefully hurt himself in front of the Raevan just to make him twist on the inside. While he cared very deeply for the man taking care of him, Gage just recently had begun feeling a strange, dull dislike for Julian that grew with every passing moment of neglect or misunderstanding between them. It was not a feeling he could describe in words, but one with pervaded his thoughts and forced him to take measures both peculiar and morbidly amusing.

Truth be told, for both males, this new turn in the Frei's behavior was highly unexpected.

No longer hearing his master's careful mechanical footsteps or the repeating thumps of his crutches behind him, Eiry continued following the sound that had interested him so in the beginning. He could hear something dying. Not anything like the scream of a murdered victim or a final sigh, but soft delicate crunching withering sounds. The noise intrigued the ever-curious raevan and he wanted to find out what it was, even if it meant getting into trouble with his keeper. Pressing his floating torso through the longing arms of some bushes, Eiry came face to face with another green raevan.

This raevan definately wasn't like his brother, Rivener, or like Lazarus at all. In fact, he was a bright new leaf green color compared to his own haunted turquoise. And he had an odd thing covering his mouth that reminded Eiry of a thick scarf that the one called Chloe would wear around her neck. There was also a horn protruding from his forehead. Eiry always watched his brother with amiring eyes because he had horns. In truth, the minty frei wanted some for himself.

Looking down at the browning dry plant in between them, Eiry gave a smile to the other frei and reached to place a hand atop the shriveled fronds. In moments like a weird reversal of time, the plant shuddered and suddenly sprang anew. The bright green color of life exploded within the plant and the leaves and stalks grew strong and slender again with water and life. Eiry felt the sappy energy of death seep into his body and he sighed, feeling nourished and somewhat less hungry than before.

Turning his ruby red eyes to the golden eyes just across the bush, Eiry smiled and greeted him, "Halloa."

If Gage had possessed more of a torso, it was probable that he would have had a heart-attack as another of his kind burst through the bushes. A second later, the stranger's unshielded smile threw him off even more than his sudden appearance. Stone-still, Gage watched with morbid curiosity as the flora he had just caused to perish burst with new life at the other Raevan's mere touch. He decided right there and then that he most likely was dreaming, because it was as though he was floating face-to-face with a better version of himself. The figure was only tinted green, and whereas all Gage could do was kill, he already had proof the other could do something different and wonderful. What lay behind Gage's mask was a mystery known fully only to himself and Dr. Kyou, but the Frei in front of him was not a freak in any respect other than he had little below his upper chest. It was quite clear that the radioactive Frei was a monster, and his grinning alter-ego was as close to perfection as someone the color of mint-flavored candy could ever be.

"J-Julian…" The Raevan's voice shook slightly with a twinge of fear and a heavy dose of regret. As much as he wanted to tear his eyes away and delete all thoughts of what was transpiring from his memories, all he could manage to do was speak that one word in an all too quiet voice. Dark thoughts enfolded his mind like thick curtains.

Julian frowned lightly at a particularly disheartening article, and continued to skim through the black and white text without a single thought to his ward. If he heard the sound of his name, he had brusquely chosen to ignore it completely in favor of a more interesting pursuit of the daily news.

As if his face was a piece of glass, Eiry's smile immediately shattered when the raevan opposite him turned white with sorrow and fear. A sorrow welled up in his floating chest and guilt washed over Eiry like a wave. Pulling the edge of his mouth, Eiry stayed in one spot and thought. Why was he looking at him like this? Did he do something wrong? He didn't want to frighten this other frei, although he couldn't imagine why the other frei blanched at the sight of him, so he forced himself to stay away. He was expecting this other frei to smile and offer a happy greeting, however, this was hardly the case. Perhaps something was wrong? Maybe this raevan was sad? Eiry really wanted to go up and hug the frei, like Rivener did when he was sad, but Eiry somehow got the impression that it wouldn't do an ounce of good.

But...That didn't mean he was about to give up.

Mustering up his voice, Eiry smiled again at the other frei. "Name is that? Julian? Name is yours?" he prodded in his halting speech, "Eiry is my name."

"No," Gage whispered, though it was hard to tell if he was simply uttering the word, or if it was an answer to the question asked. Eyelids fluttering shut, he methodically pinched what could be seen of the bridge of his nose between a thumb and index finger. There was no relief to be had from such an action, but he had witnessed his guardian doing it many a time whenever his Sitter or Ms. Shuura came to visit their apartment. After a split second of patience, Gage halfway opened his left eye only to see that the stranger had not mystically departed as of yet. His voice sounded unnatural to his own ears when he next spoke; sheer compulsion did not regularly cause the raevan to speak."I am Gage. Julian is my owner."

Fretting openly, he dropped either of his hands to his sides. Some of the fear had subsided as it readily became clear that the other was in no way a hallucination or improved version of himself. After all, they did not even possess the same name with some version number attached at the end. His inverted eyes were mere slits as he brought himself up to the highest height his loose end would allow. "What do you want?"

Offering a shy eager smile, Eiry immediately took the introduction as a cue to step out from his shell. He had not met many raevans as of yet and the only interaction he really received from other individuals was limited to his brother, Rivener, and his owner, Aphismet, and, of course, his own guardian, Isikoro. Bobbing slightly in the air with happiness for starting his very own conversation with a fellow frei, the minty raevan floated closer from around the lively bush.

"What I want?" Eirdirsceol echoed thoughtfully. He paused for a moment and thought about it. What did he want? He had been hungry and he wanted nutrition, but that was taken care of. He had wanted a family and a combination of the Lab and Isi had given him that. Eiry had wanted safety, but he was given that by Rivener. Well now, what did that leave? What did he want? Eiry sucked on his bottom lip when he suddenly realized what it was that he really wanted.

"I want a friend," Eirdirsceol answered, very definite and soft as if he were speaking a whisper to Gage. The young-ling waited expectantly, watching the green frei before him with large blood red eyes.

By all rights, Gage should have been at ease with the other frei. Clearly, the stranger posed no threat, nor did he show any unsuitable characteristics. The only unpleasantness in the matter was the radioactive Raevan's original fears, which lingered even as he came to realize they were merely ridiculous misconceptions. He felt a purely animalistic urge to float away as fast as possible when the "Eiry" frei overcame some of the physical distance between them. With a great deal of effort, he willed what could be seen of his face to take on a neutral expression. He laced his fingers together and held them to his chest.

"A friend?" There were several things Gage desired, but he had never really considered friendship to be one of them. It was not that he would have turned down the idea completely, he just could never think of it as something one pursued or thought about. Besides, contemplating it in terms of his own unsatisfactory social situation was merely disheartening. After all, who could honestly wish his attachment when there were far more suitable people that might fit the role?

Julian continued to peruse his paper as though he could sense his charge's lack of self-esteem and consequently found him unworthy of immediate attention.

Gage could not visibly frown, but his eyes might have conveyed the general message. "You do not even know me."

It was around that moment that Isikoro hobbled over the bridge and into Julian's sight. He paused in his path, looked around, screwed his mouth into a frown and muttered curse word after curse word. He had lost track of his frei and now he couldn't find a single floating ribbon or trace of Eiry's foxfire wings. He couldn't even follow the path of bright flourishing plants to find Eiry because the path of what Eiry ate wasn't easily distinguishable from the other living plants of DeadWood Park. Noticing the man on the bench, Isi hobbled close and asked wearily, "Pardon? Have you seen a floating half bodied person go past here?"

Tilting his head at the other frei, Eiry took a moment to comprehend the other's question. You don't even know me, he had said. Yes, Eiry supposed that was true, but it didn't quell his desire to be his friend. He had read in picture books at the Lab during his long lonely stay that one was supposed to have friends. Questing to find the friendship that these happy colorful books spoke of, because books knew everything, Eiry hadn't really found friendship in the other Lab inhabitants like Roux and Lazarus. The only friend he had was his brother, Riv.

"We are same, same hearted" Eiry responded eagerly, meaning that they were the same type of being, "If I know you not then with time, I will know you? And you will know me?" We will not be lonely. Yes? Sound good?"

The news never really fazed Julian, though he found it only prudent to keep up with the times. Whether a simply massive car crash had been observed, or some sports team personification of the classic underdog had managed to win some Gaia-wide competition, the young scientist could not honestly state that he truly cared one way or the other. In the end, whether it was aliens invading or an orphan epidemic, Julian Sweet was rarely overly concerned with the world on a large scale. Selfishly, he pinpointed his attention on his individual existence, and private issues that fueled his every slight action or vital decision. More important than the Gambino family and its unique psychosis, he wished to evaluate his own internal workings, or—better yet—the incentives of other Raevan guardians. Practically without his consent, Julian's universe had shifted so that the laboratory of Dr. Kyou was the center of it. Such a development would not have been of great concern if only he knew there was any reciprocation. Only. No.

There was a certain percentage of dullness in Julian's expression as he turn to set his gaze on the stranger asking for his assistance. "Excuse me? A half-bodied-- Oh."

Julian folded his paper neatly then, settling it on his lap as blue eyes sharpened. He assessed the younger man's appearance with a critical eye, and after a moment it appeared he did not find the boy entirely lacking. "Let me guess. At some point within the last year or so you were contacted by a rather shady individual with horns, long black hair, and the ability to create a creature called a Raevan out of a soul and something known as a fel essence. And you actually did not question this enough to avoid ending up with a Frei."

The twitch of his lips did not entirely count as a smile. "My name is Julian Sweet. Who, exactly, are you?"

"Same… hearted?" Gage might have gone green had he not originally been born such a color, but the slightest opening of his eyes and paling of his skin made it clear the words weighted heavily him all the same. While his head knew the basics of what he wished to question, he could not exactly verbalize how strange he found the fact someone that could give life felt so similar to the virtual grim reaper of the world's flora. The radioactive Frei turned as his mechanical wings stretched out to their fullest extent with all the usual sounds of gears and metal shifting. Nervous energy filled him out entirely. Forced him to anxiety. Made his shoulders tense, which was an unfortunate circumstance when one's entire body was little other than shoulders. "I. I guess. We might get to know each other."

At least Gage did not seem as though he might bolt at any moment anymore. That was a turn in the right direction.

Isi didn't seem intimidated by this man, but he was already learning to respect him. The first thing and foremost thing that Isi noticed and was appeased by was the fact that this Julian Sweet hadn't leaped up out of his seat in a panic at the sight of Isi's crutches. He didn't make any comment to him, he didn't even stare. Isi felt a ball of relief expel its tenseness from his stomach and he relaxed. This guy was okay, so far. He wasn't about to drop his guard, he learned that from experience, but this was the first time in a while that someone hadn't exclaimed "Oh, you poor boy!".

It was nice.

When Julian over viewed the way by which he had acquired a raevan, Isi...surprisingly didn't agree. He shook his head at the end of Julian's phrase and he shrugged his shoulders so that he awkwardly lifted his crutches off from the ground. "Actually, no, not that at all," Isi affirmed, "My adopted grandmother acquired him for me. How? I don't know. But, if that's how raevan's are received then I guess that must've happened to her and not to me. But I did end up with one and now I've lost him. Damn Eiry won't keep still."

He hobbled a bit closer and the crippled boy undid his hand from the grip he had on his crutch so he could shake hands with the man. It was a proper gesture, he thought, "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Sweet. I'm Isikoro Etul Delaran. You may call me, Isi."

Eiry smiled an ear to ear smile. He was glad! It looked like he had finally broken through to his other half and he bounced a bit in his victory with the help of his foxfire wings. Other than Rivener, Eiry didn't know any other raevans that he was friends with. Except for...Roux, but eiry was scared of him. He didn't know what he had done but that raevan always gave him the cold shoulder or an icy eye. Eiry was overly optimistic for being partly dead, but that didn't stop him from being filled with life.

"Good!" Eiry exclaimed, his red eyes of blood red lightening with hope. He plucked a piece of the bush and he held it out for Gage, like a peace offering or more of a promise to friendship, "Then we shall be friends, Gage and Eiry. But with time, yes? And no more lonely! Two, instead of one."

I do not think you understand,” Gage said a bit more harshly than he meant to. He reached out one four fingered hand, letting the very tip of his index finger merely graze a small patch of the presented piece of bush. Instantly the entire area the toxic Frei had come in contact with shriveled up, turning as brown and barren as the murderer of helpless little plants had expected it to. Mentally he no longer had Eiry labeled as a threat, but it was unquestionably difficult to face someone who could fix all of his mistakes. Gage offered his new “friend” the widest berth possible as he moved around him in order to locate Julian. If he did nothing else, he should at least tell the man that some strange Raevan was roaming around ownerless. Surely the doctor did not pass his kind off to guardians for kicks; they were required caretakers, and it was silly of Eiry’s to lose track of him if he was just going to go around saving flora and forcing people to befriend him. “Follow me, now.

Julian listened near intently as the boy described how his Raevan had been procured for him. Personally, the scientist had never met his grandparents, but he assumed the elderly were a softer sort. Anything to get the grandkids to visit, right? He was not quite sure how he felt about the idea of a living being as complex as a Frei being a present; despite his reservations, it was not an uncommon practice in Gaia. “Your grandmother must be a very interesting woman.”

Either that or Dr. Kyou had taken to throwing fel essences at anyone willing to fill a soul bottle again. When Julian had first received the radioactive goo, he had felt somewhat proud as though being assigned the possibility of a Raevan was a grand triumph. Then he met Shuura, and realized it was fully possible that Lab 305’s owner felt there need not be any actual qualifications for a Raevan guardian. Any random person would do just fine.

“My own ward should be in the vicinity. His name is Gage, and—ah. There he is. Gage, over here,’ Julian called, waving a hand idly for identification purposes. “Is that your Eiry he has in tow?”
PostPosted: Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:23 pm

Eiry watched as the other frei took away the life from the plant he had offered and he marveled at the instance. To Eiry, young and naive as he was, he was amazed by such an ability, rather than scared by it. He hardly registered it as anything else other than a talent to be awed at and he wondered what would happen if he had that ability too. He'd be able to eat as much as he liked and when he was hungry instead of waiting to be taken to the park or killing off Isi's garden. But that was a silly thought. Eiry was just about to express his awe for Gage's ability when suddenly the raevan motioned and gesticulated to him to follow. "Yes, friend!" So, innocent and easily amused, Eiry took to the demand and treated it as a game and he followed his lighter green counterpart out of the verdure and onto the path where he was eventually led to a concrete path. It was this path, that led the two young frei to a park bench where a strange man with glasses and Eiry's crippled guardian awaited.

"Yes," Isi replied dispondently with the shrug of his tired shoulders, "That's my Eiry. Finally, I thought I'd never catch up to him."

"Oh, look and see, is that your Uncle?" Eiry asked delightedly, floating out from behind Gage and moving forward to inspect Julian Sweet. The man was strange to him simply because he had orange hair, but he maintained his distance, "That one's my Uncle," Eiry stated, pointing to Isi who was, at that moment, reprimanding the raevan.

"Eirdirsceol! I told you to stay where I could see you, alright? I can't move as fast as you can, even though we both don't have legs, got it? You could have gotten in some danger or taken away...Eiry, listen to me!" Isi raised his voice a bit as the raevan returned to trying to ask questions of Gage. That was all he needed to get the minty frei's attention back, "You must stay where I can see you, or I won't take you here any more to feed and you'll just have to wait for some other plants to die before you eat again, do you hear me?"

Eiry nodded, screwing his mouth at his guardian and bowing his head. He knew he had done something wrong, but he felt like he couldn't help it. He just got so ecstatic! "Yes, Isikoro."

"Good. Now that we have that taken care of, I want you to say hello to Mr. Julian Sweet. Be polite, Eiry," Isi dictated, crossing his arms so that for a couple moments he was standing without the help of his crutches. "Go on."

"Hello, Mr. Julian Sweet," Eiry stated, smiling ear to ear as he reached out with a hand, "I am Eirdirsceol, it's a pleasure to meet you!" But when the young scientist reached for his hand he would find, to his dismay that his hand would pass right through Eiry's and the young frei would begin to laugh.

"Cut it out, Eiry!" Isi snarled.

"Yes, sorry," Eiry giggled and he held out his hand again, his face bright despite its deathly hue.
